  • This paper proposes a method to detect a facial region and extract facial features which is crucial for visual recognition of human faces. In this paper, we extract the MER(Minimum Enclosing Rectangle) of a face and facial components using projection analysis on both edge image and binary image. We use an active contour model(snakes) for extraction of the contours of eye, mouth, eyebrow, and face in order to reflect the individual differences of facial shapes and converge quickly. The determination of initial contour is very important for the performance of snakes. Particularly, we detect Minimum Enclosing Rectangle(MER) of facial components and then determine initial contours using general shape of facial components within the boundary of the obtained MER. We obtained experimental results to show that MER extraction of the eye, mouth, and face was performed successfully. But in the case of images with bright eyebrow, MER extraction of eyebrow was performed poorly. We obtained good contour extraction with the individual differences of facial shapes. Particularly, in the eye contour extraction, we combined edges by first order derivative operator and zero crossings by second order derivative operator in designing energy function of snakes, and we achieved good eye contours. For the face contour extraction, we used both edges and grey level intensity of pixels in designing of energy function. Good face contours were extracted as well.

  • This paper discusses a skeleton feature extraction method for ubiquitous robot system. The skeleton features are used to analyze human motion and pose estimation. In different conventional feature extraction environment, the ubiquitous robot system requires more robust feature extraction method because it has internal vibration and low image quality. The new hybrid silhouette extraction method and adaptive skeleton model are proposed to overcome this constrained environment. The skin color is used to extract more sophisticated feature points. Finally, the experimental results show the superiority of the proposed method.

  • Active Contour Model, that is, Snake algorithm is effective for detection and tracking the objects. However, this algorithm has some drawbacks; numerous parameters must be designed(weighting factors, iteration steps, etc.), a reasonable initialization must be available and moreover suffers from numerical instability. Therefore we propose a novel Energy Corrected Snake(ECS) algorithm which improved on external energy of Snake algorithm for detection and tracking the moving object more effectively. The proposed algorithm uses the difference image, getting when the object is moving. It copies four direction images from the difference image and performs the accumulating compute to erasing image noise, so that it gets external energy steadily. Then external energy united with contour that is computed by internal energy. Consequently we can detect and track the moving object more speedily and easily. To show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, we experiment on 3 situations. The experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm outperformed by 6$\sim$9% of detection rate and 6$\sim$11% of tracker detection rate compared with the Snake algorithm.

  • Indian herbal plants are used in agriculture and in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries. Laboratory-based tests are routinely used to identify and classify similar herb species by analyzing their internal cell structures. In this paper, we have applied computer vision techniques to do the same. The original leaf image was preprocessed using the Chan-Vese active contour segmentation algorithm to efface the background from the image by setting the contraction bias as (v) -1 and smoothing factor (µ) as 0.5, and bringing the initial contour close to the image boundary. Thereafter the segmented grayscale image was fed to a leaky capacitance fired neuron model (LCFN), which differentiates between similar herbs by combining different groups of pixels in the leaf image. The LFCN's decay constant (f), decay constant (g) and threshold (h) parameters were empirically assigned as 0.7, 0.6 and h=18 to generate the 1D feature vector. The LCFN time sequence identified the internal leaf structure at different iterations. Our proposed framework was tested against newly collected herbal species of natural images, geometrically variant images in terms of size, orientation and position. The 1D sequence and shape features of aloe, betel, Indian borage, bittergourd, grape, insulin herb, guava, mango, nilavembu, nithiyakalyani, sweet basil and pomegranate were fed into the 5-fold Bayesian regularization neural network (BRNN), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), and ensemble classifier to obtain the highest classification accuracy of 91.19%.

  • In this paper we propose an image-based approach, which is different from the traditional flow cytometric method to detect shape of apoptosis cells. This method can overcome the defects of cytometry and give precise recognition of apoptosis cells. In this work K-means clustering was used to do the rough segmentation and an active contour model, called 'snake' was used to do the precise edge detection. And then some features were extracted including physical feature, shape descriptor and texture features of the apoptosis cells. Finally a Mahalanobis distance classifier classifies the segmentation images as apoptosis and non-apoptosis cell.

  • This paper deals with the problem of moving object detection and location in computer vision. We describe a new object-dependent motion analysis method for tracking target in an image sequence taken from a moving platform. We tackle these tasks with three steps. First, we make an active contour model of a target in order to build some of low-energy points, which are called kernels. Then we detect interest points in two windows called tracking windows around a kernel respectively. At the third step, we decide the correspondence of those detected interest points between tracking windows by the probabilistic relaxation method In this algorithm, the detecting process is iterative and begins with the detection of all potential correspondence pair in consecutive image. Each pair of corresponding points is then iteratively recomputed to get a globally optimum set of pairwise correspondences.

  • An active contour model, Snake, was developed as a useful segmenting and tracking tool lot rigid or non-rigid (i.e. deformable) objects by Kass in 1987 In this research, Snake is newly designed to cover this large moving case. Image flow energy is proposed to give Snake the motion information of the target object. By this image flow energy Snake's nodes can move uniformly along the direction of the target motion in spite of the existences of local minima. Furthermore, when the motion is too large to apply image flow energy to tracking, a jump mode is proposed for solving the problem. The vector used to make Snake's nodes jump to the new location can be obtained by processing the image flow. The effectiveness of the proposed Snake is confirmed by some simulations.
