  • Kinetic studies on the water-gas shift reaction catalyzed by magnetite/chromium oxide and copper/zinc oxide were carried out by using an in situ photoacoustic spectroscopic technique. The reactions were performed in a closed-circulation reactor system using a differential photoacoustic cell at total pressure of 40 Torr in the temperature range of 100 to $350^{\circ}C.$ The CO2 photoacoustic signal varying with the concentration of CO2 during the catalytic reaction was recorded as a function of time. The time-resolved photoacoustic spectra obtained for the initial reaction stage provided precise data of CO2 formation rate. The apparent activation energies determined from the initial rates were 74.7 kJ/mol for the magnetite/chromium oxide catalyst and 50.9 kJ/mol for the copper/zinc oxide catalyst. To determine the reaction orders, partial pressures of CO(g) and H2O(g) in the reaction mixture were varied at a constant total pressure of 40 Torr with N2 buffer gas. For the magnetite/chromium oxide catalyst, the reaction orders with respect to CO and H2O were determined to be 0.93 and 0.18, respectively. For the copper/zinc oxide catalyst, the reaction orders with respect to CO and H2O were determined to be 0.79 and 0, respectively.

  • Two azole compounds viz., Imidazole (IM) and 2-Methylimidazole (2-MIM) were studied to investigate their inhibiting action on corrosion of mild steel in phosphoric acid ($H_3PO_4$) solution by mass loss and polarization techniques at 302K-333K. It has been found that the inhibition efficiency of the all inhibitors increased with increase in inhibitor concentration and decreases with increasing temperature and also with increase in acid concentrations. The inhibition efficiency of these compounds showed very good inhibition efficiency. At 0.5% of IM and 2-MIM in 1N and 5N phosphoric acid solution at 302K to 333K for 5 hours immersion period, the inhibition efficiency of 2-Methylimidazole found to be higher than Imidazole. The adsorption of these compounds on the mild steel surface from the acids has been found to obey Tempkin's adsorption isotherm. The values of activation energy ($E{\alpha}$) and free energy of adsorption (${\Delta}G{\alpha}ds$) were also calculated. The plots of log $W_f$ against time (days) at 302K give straight line which suggested that it obeys first order kinetics and also calculate the rate constant k and half life time $t_{1/2}$. Surface was analyzed by SEM and FITR spectroscopy.

  • The efficiency and mechanism of electrochemical phenol oxidation using persulfate (PS) and nanosized zero-valent iron (NZVI) were investigated. The pseudo-first-order rate constant for phenol removal by the electrochemical/PS/NZVI ($1mA^*cm^{-2}/12$ mM/6 mM) process was $0.81h^{-1}$, which was higher than those of the electrochemical/PS and PS/NZVI processes. The electrochemical/PS/NZVI system removed 1.5 mM phenol while consuming 6.6 mM PS, giving the highest stoichiometric efficiency (0.23) among the tested systems. The enhanced phenol removal rates and efficiencies observed for the electrochemical/PS/NZVI process were attributed to the interactions involving the three components, in which the electric current stimulated PS activation, NZVI depassivation, phenol oxidation, and PS regeneration by anodic or cathodic reactions. The electrochemical/PS/NZVI process effectively removed phenol oxidation products such as hydroquinone and 1,4-benzoquinone. Since the electric current enhances the reactivities of PS and NZVI, process performance can be optimized by effectively manipulating the current.

  • To investigate the effect of microstructure on the formation of the desorption peak, the volumetric thermal analysis technique (VTA) was applied to the Mg-13.5 wt% Ni hydride system. The sample made by the HCS (hydriding combustion synthesis) process had two kinds of Mg microstructures. Linear heating was started with various constant heating rates. Only one peak was appeared in the case of the small initial hydrogen wt% (0.83 wt%). Yet, two peaks were appeared with increasing initial hydrogen wt% (1.85 and 3.73 wt%) when only Mg was hydrogenated. The first peak was formed through the evolution of hydrogen from $MgH_2$, made by eutectic Mg. The second peak was formed through the evolution of hydrogen from $MgH_2$, made by primary Mg. Therefore, this result shows that the microstructure also has a considerable effect on forming the desorption peak. We have also derived the hydrogen desorption equations by VTA to get apparent activation energy when the rate-controlling step for the desorption of the hydrided system is the diffusion of hydrogen through the ${\alpha}$ phase and the chemical reaction ${\beta}{\rightarrow}{\alpha}$.

  • The dependence of electrical conductivity on concentrations of diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC) monomer, linear poly(DADMAC) and their mixture monomer/poly(DADMAC) in dilute aqueous solution exhibits a linear relationship. It was possible to calculate conversion of DADMAC polymerization by measuring its electric conductivity. Although the electrical conductivity of the poly(DADMAC) solution decreased with increasing its molecular weight, in the process of UV or ionizing radiation polymerization the molecular weight of the polymers could be kept constant in the case of fixed temperature, UV-luminous intensity or dose rate. Based on the method mentioned above, the kinetics of UV induced polymerization of DADMAC in aqueous solution was studied; the overall activation energy of polymerization of DADMAC in the water phase was calculated to be 18.8 kJ mol$^{-1}$ . ${\gamma}$-Radiation-induced polymerization of DADMAC in aqueous solution as a function of absorbed dose was studied as well. The conversion of DADMAC increased quickly with dose before 30 kGy and then increased slowly. The experimental data of both UV- and ${\gamma}$-induced polymerization were verified to be reliable by inverted ultracentrifugation method.

  • In this study, intermediate thermo-mechanical treated Al-2.0 wt%Li, and Al-2.0 wt%Li-1.2 wt%Cu-1.0 wt%Mg-0.12 wt%Zr alloys were tested in tension at $10^{\circ}C$ and elevated temperature(100, 200 and $300^{\circ}C$). The results are follows : The tensile strength of Al-Li-Cu-Mg-Zr alloy is the highest but the elongation of Al-Li alloy is the highest(106%) among the all alloys in tension at $300^{\circ}C$. The Portervin-LeChartlier effect is showed in AI-Li-Cu-Mg-Zr alloy at 10 and $100^{\circ}C$, because of tangled dislocation by Mg and Cu. In the true stress-strain curves of all alloy, the peaks of stress at $300^{\circ}C$ are showed at the strain less than 0.1. In the binary alloy, the dynamic restoration process at 200 and $300^{\circ}C$ is nearly similar to dynamic recovery type. The hot deformation stress is decreased with increase of dynamic recovery degree, but the elongation is increased. When the strain the strain rate are constant, the temperature dependence of hot deformation stress is increased with increase of deformation temperature. The elongation and degree of dynamic recovery are decreased with increase of hot deformation activation energy, but the deformation stresses slightly increased.

  • The corrosion behaviour of mild steel in phosphoric acid solution in the presence and absence of pollutants viz. Chloride, Fluoride and Sulfate ions at 302K-333K was studied using mass loss and potentiostatic polarization methods. The addition of chloride and sulfate ions inhibits the mild steel corrosion in phosphoric acid while fluoride ions stimulate it. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behaviour of mild steel indicated that inhibition of chloride and sulfate ions decreased with increasing temperature. The adsorption of these ions (Chloride and sulfate) on the mild steel surface in acid has been found to obey Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The values of activation energy (Ea) and free energy of adsorption ($\Delta$) indicated physical adsorption of these ions (chloride and sulfate) on the mild steel surface. The plot of $logW_{f}$ against time (days) at 302K gives a straight line, which suggested that it obeys first order kinetics and also calculate the rate constant k and half-life time $t_{1/2}$.

  • Effects of cultivars, cooking, and processing on hemagglutinin activity were evaluated by observing macroscopic hemagglutination using serial twofold dilution of trypsinized human blood type-O or rabbit blood. Hemagglutinin activity was expressed as maximal geometric dilution fold. Agglutination of rabbit blood was more sensitive compared to human blood. Hemagglutinin activities of glyphosate-tolerant soybean, HS2906, and imported conventional soybeans were not statistically different, although significant differences were observed among conventional soybean cultivars cultivated in Korea (286 to 1535 HU/mg protein). Time required to reach fifty percent inhibition of hemagglutinin activity ($IT_{50}$) value decreased with increasing cooking temperature and pressure. Most effective conventional cooking method to inhibit hemagglutinin activity was pressure-cooking ($IT_{50}$: 1.36 min). Calculated activation energy based on reaction rate constant was 4.88 kcal. No hemagglutinin activities were detected in processed soybean products such as tofu, soybean paste, and soysauce.

  • This study was prepared to develop the sustained release dosage form of phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride (PPA) by complexation with cation exchange resin(CER). The PPA-CER complex was confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) thennogram, indicating a relative shift of an endometric peak of PPA to higher temperature. The loading efficiency was increased as the amount of PPA was increased as well as the time of fractional exchange was advanced as the temperatures were increased. Loading efficiency, fractional exchange, reaction rate constant and activation energy were highly dependent on the temperature and drug : resin ratio. The optimal ratio of PPA and resin was estimated to be 10: 10 for the sustained release.

  • The binding of cellobiohydrolases to cullulose is a crucial initial step in cellulose hydrolysis. In the search for a detailed understanding of the function of cellobiohydrolases, much information concerning how the enzymes and their constituent catalytic and cellulose-binding changes during hydrolysis is still needed. The adsorption of purified two cellobiohydrolases (Ce17A and Ce16A) from Trichoderma reesei cellulase to microcrystalline cellulose has been studied. Cellobiohydrolase II (Ce16A) does not affect the adsorption of cellobiohydrolase I (Ce17A) significantly, and there are specific binding sites for both Ce17A and Ce16A. The adsorption affinity and tightness of the cullulase binding domain (CBD) for Ce17A are larger than those of the CBD for Ce16A. The CBD for Ce17A binds more rapidly and tightly to Avicel than the CBD for Ce16A. The decrease in adsorption observed when the two cellobihydrolases are studied together would appear to be the result of competition for binding sites on the cellulose. Ce17A competes more efficiently for binding sites than Ce16A. Competition for binding sites is the dominating factor when the two enzymes are acting together, furthermore adsorption to sites specific for Ce17A and Ce16A, also contributes to the total adsorption.
