  • The study is related to the synthesis of acrylic acid by selective oxidation of acrolein on Mo-V-W multicomponent mixed oxide catalysts. Mo-V-W-O(WVM), Mo-V-O/Mo-W-O(VM/WM), Mo-W-O/Mo-V-O(WM/VM) and mechanical mixtures of Mo-V-O and Mo-W-O(M-VM+WM) were prepared and characterized by BET, XRD, SEM and EPMA. Catalytic activity of these catalysts was tested in a continuous fixed bed reactor. In WVM catalysts small amount of tungsten added to VM increased surface area and selectivity of acrylic acid, but excess amount of tungsten decreased reaction rate of acrolein and selectivity. VM/WM catalysts, VM supported on WM, showed higher activity and selectivity than WM/VM catalysts where WM is supported on VM. Phase cooperation between WM and VM was observed in mechanical mixture of WM and VM and they showed higher yield than WM or VM.

  • $Mo-V-O/SnO_2$(VM/Sn) and $SnO_2/Mo-V-O$(Sn/VM) catalysts have been prepared and characterized by XRD, BET, SEM and TPD of ammonia. The catalytic reaction of acrolein oxidation with these catalysts, in a continuous-flow fixed-bed reactor, showed that they had higher conversion of acrolein and higher yield of acrylic acid than those of Mo-V-O itself. The origin of the observed synergy studied by TPD, TPR and TPO is explained by the cooperation of $SnO_2$ and Mo-V-O at their interfaces where electrons flow from Mo-V-O phase to $SnO_2$ and $SnO_2$ produces spill-over oxygens, which, by being transported onto the surface of Mo-V-O, reoxidize the partially reduced active sites.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the contribution of various smoke constituents to the toxicological activity of total particulate matter(TPM) or the gas/vapor phase(GVP). These components included phenol compounds, aromatic amines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, heterocyclic amines, and carbonyl compounds. The mutagenic and cytotoxic potencies were assessed using the Salmonella mutagenicity assay with S. typimurium TA98 strain and the neutral red uptake cytotoxicity assay(NRU) with BALB/c 3T3 fibroblast cells, respectively. The Salmonella mutagenicity test showed that heterocyclic amines exhibited significantly higher levels of toxicity compared to other smoke constituents. Among them, 2-amino-3,4-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline(MeIQ) was shown the most mutagenic compound with a specific mutagenicity of $7.9{\times}10^5\;revertants/{\mu}g$. An analysis of the possible contribution revealed that MeIQ account for only 0.85% of the 2R4F-TPM mutagenicity in TA98. NRU data demonstrated that high cytotoxic activity was obtained for hydroquinone, formaldehyde, and acrolein. Based on the results of the present study, the contribution of acrolein to the cytotoxicity of the GVP fraction was calculated as 61%. Thus, a large proportion of the cytotoxic activity of this complex mixture, cigarette smoke gas phase, can be attributed to the acrolein.

  • The synergistic effects in mechanical mixture catalysts of Mo-V-O and metal oxide were investigated for the selective oxidation of acrolein. The metal oxides used are $SnO_2$, ${\alpha}-Sb_2O_4$, $WO_3$, ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, CuO, $MnO_2$, $Cu_2O$, MgO, CoO, and ZnO. Mechanical mixtures of Mo-V-O plus $SnO_2$ or ${\alpha}-Sb_2O_4$ had resulted in higher conversion of acrolein and higher yield of acrylic acid than Mo-V-O. The origin of the synergy is attributed to the cooperation of Mo-V-O and $SnO_2$ or ${\alpha}-Sb_2O_4$, in which $SnO_2$ or ${\alpha}-Sb_2O_4$ forms dissociated oxygens at their oxygen vacancies and transports them to Mo-V-O. $Cu_2O$, MgO, CuO, and $MnO_2$, increased conversion of acrolein but decreased yield of acrylic acid. CoO and ZnO inhibited the catalytic performance of Mo-V-O. The different role of these metal oxides is explained in terms of their oxidation-reduction properties.

  • Nitroalcohols were prepared by a substitution reaction from the corresponding bromoalcohols. The second nitro group was introduced via different methods depending on the carbon chain length. 3,3-Dinitro-1-propanol was obtained by an intramolecular varient of the alkaline nitration method. Whereas 5,5-dinitro-1-pentanol was given by the catalytic oxidative nitration. 3,3-Dinitro-1-propanol and 5,5-dinitro-1-pentanol were converted to 3,3-dinitro-1,6-hexanediol and 4,4-dinitro-1,8-octanediol via Michael reaction with acrolein followed by the reduction of the resulting aldehydes. Acetyl group was a good protecting group for the substitution reaction while THP was for the catalytic oxidative nitration.

  • Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) are difficult to measure, analyze and assess for risk because of low ambient concentrations and varieties. Types of HAPs are Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) and Aldehydes. HAP emissions from vehicles are a contributor to serious adverse health effects in urban areas. In this study, hazardous air pollutant emissions from road transport vehicles by Non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) weight fraction and PAHs emission factors are estimated in 2008. The top-five-most hazardous air pollutant emissions were estimated to toluene 864.3 ton/yr, acrolein 690.6 ton/yr, acetaldehyde 554.5 ton/yr, formaldehyde 498.7 ton/yr, propionaldehyde 421.6 ton/yr in 2008. The results for a cancer and non-cancer risk assessment of HAPs emissions show that the major cancer driver is formaldehyde and the non-cancer driver is acrolein.

  • Antifungal activities of cinnamaldehyde derivatives against various fungi were investigated using paper disc diffusion method. Among the derivatives tested, ${\alpha}-chlorocinnamaldehyde$ was stronger than cinnamaldehyde in antifungal activity and was effective in inhibiting the growth of the representative fungi of dermatomycosis with minimum inhibitory concentration of $9.76{\sim}19.5\;{\mu}g/ml$. A comparison of antifungal activity of cinnamaldehyde derivatives revealed that antifungal action of cinnamaldehyde might be related to a basic structure of acrolein.

  • Various catalysts of $Cu_xH_3-{_{2x}}PMo_{12}O_{40}{\cdot}_nH_2O$ with different x-values have been prepared and characterized by thermal analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, BET surface-area measurement, electron microscopy, and temperature programmed desorption of ammonia. The properties of these catalysts in acrolein oxidation have been investigated in a continuous-flow fixed-bed reactor. The catalysts lost their water of crystallization at about $200^{\circ}C$ and their constitutional water between 300 and $400^{\circ}C$. The Keggin structure of the catalysts was identified by infrared spectroscopy. The decomposition of Keggin anion, $(PMo_{12}O_{40})^{3-}$, was increased with the increase of substituted copper content and identifiable $MoO_3$ and $P_2O_5$ as decomposition products were observed. The conversion of acrolein decreased with the increase of x probably due to the decrease of specific surface area and of total amount of acid sites. But specific reaction rate and selectivity to acrylic acid were maximized at x=1.0, and it showed specific acid site distributions.

  • The methanol extract of Cinnamoni Cortex showed antibacterial action against cariogenic bacterium, Streptococcus mutans OMZ 176. The active principle of the extract was identified to be trans-cinnamaldehyde, which was bactericidal in the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of $100\;\mu$g/ml against the strain. From the results of antibacterial activity of cinnamaldehyde and its derivatives, the acrolein group in the cinnamaldehyde was elucidated to be an essential element for the activity.
