Irregular temporal sampling is a common feature of geophysical and biological time series in remote sensing. This study proposes an on-line system for reconstructing observation image series contaminated by noises resulted from mechanical problems or sensing environmental condition. There is also a high likelihood that during the data acquisition periods the target site corresponding to any given pixel may be covered by fog or cloud, thereby resulting in bad or missing observation. The surface parameters associated with the land are usually dependent on the climate, and many physical processes that are displayed in the image sensed from the land then exhibit temporal variation with seasonal periodicity. A feedback system proposed in this study reconstructs a sequence of images remotely sensed from the land surface having the physical processes with seasonal periodicity. The harmonic model is used to track seasonal variation through time, and a Gibbs random field (GRF) is used to represent the spatial dependency of digital image processes. The experimental results of this simulation study show the potentiality of the proposed system to reconstruct the image series observed by imperfect sensing technology from the environment which are frequently influenced by bad weather. This study provides fundamental information on the elements of the proposed system for right usage in application.

Digital image correlation (DIC) is now a popular and extensively used full-field metrology technique. In general, DIC is performed by using a turnkey solution offered by various manufacturers of DIC. In this paper, a simple and economical set-up for DIC is proposed which uses easily accessible digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera rather than industrial couple-charged device (CCD) cameras. The paper gives a description of aspects of carrying a DIC experiment which includes experimental set-up, specimen preparation, image acquisition and analysis. The details provided here will be helpful to carry DIC experiments without specialized DIC testing rig. To validate the responses obtained from proposed DIC set-up, tension and fatigue tests on specimens made of IS 2062 Gr. E300 steel are determined. Tensile parameters for a flat specimen and stress intensity factor for an eccentrically-loaded single edge notch tension specimen are evaluated from results of DIC experiment. Results obtained from proposed DIC experiments are compared with those obtained from conventional methods and are found to be in close agreement. It is also noted that the high resolution of DSLR allows the use of proposed approach for fracture characterization which could not be carried out with a typical turnkey DIC solution employing a camera of 2MP resolution.

Quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance (qNMR) is a well-established method adopted by international pharmacopoeia for quantitative and purity analyses. Emodin is a type of anthraquinone, well known as the main active component of Fabaceae, Polygonaceae and Rhamnaceae. Purity analysis of emodin is usually performed by using the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-UV method. However, it cannot detect impurities such as salts, volatile matter, and trace elements. Using the qNMR method, it is possible to determine the compound content as well as the nature of the impurities. Several experimental parameters were optimized for the quantification, such as relaxation delay, spectral width, number of scans, temperature, pulse width, and acquisition time. The method was validated, and the results of the qNMR method were compared with those obtained by the HPLC and mass balance analysis methods. The qNMR method is specific, rapid, simple, and therefore, a valuable and reliable method for the purity analysis of emodin.
This study aims to validate a fast method of simultaneous analysis of 365 LCamenable and 142 GC-amenable pesticides in hen eggs by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), respectively, operating in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) acquisition modes. The sample preparation was based on quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) extraction. Key method performance parameters investigated were specificity, linearity, limit of quantification (LOQ), accuracy, precision and measurement uncertainty. The method was validated at two spiking levels (10 and 50 ㎍/kg), and good recoveries (70%-120%) and relative standard deviations (RSDs) (≤20) were achieved for 92.9% of LC-amenable and 86.6% of GC-amenable pesticide residues. The LOQs were ≤10 ㎍/kg for 94.2% of LC-amenable and 92.3% of GC-amenable pesticides. The validated method was further applied to 100 egg samples from caged hens, and none of the pesticides was quantified.
Climatic characteristics were described using the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and the met-mast on Dongbok·Bukchon region. The influences of meteorological conditions on the power performance of wind turbines were presented using the data of Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) and met-mast of the Dongbok·Bukchon Wind Farm (DBWF) located in Jeju Island. The stability was categorized into three parameters (Richardson number, Turbulence intensity, and Wind shear exponent). DBWF was dominant in unstable atmospheric conditions. At wind speeds of 14 m/s or more, the proportion of slightly unstable conditions accounted for more than 50%. A clear difference in the power output of the wind turbine was exhibited in the category of atmospheric stability and turbulence intensity (TI). Particularly, a more sensitive difference in power performance was showed in the rated wind speeds of the wind turbine and wind regime with high TI. When the flow had a high turbulence at low wind speeds and a low turbulence at rated wind speeds, a higher wind energy potential was produced than that in other conditions. Finally, the high-efficiency of the wind farm was confirmed in the slightly unstable atmospheric stability. However, when the unstable state become stronger, the wind farm efficiency was lower than that in the stable state.
Due to the lack of improper image acquisition process, noise induction is an inevitable step. As a result, objective image quality assessment (IQA) plays an important role in estimating the visual quality of noisy image. Plenty of IQA methods have been proposed including traditional signal processing based methods as well as current deep learning based methods where the later one shows promising performance due to their complex representation ability. The deep learning based methods consists of several convolution layers and down sampling layers for feature extraction and fully connected layers for regression. Usually, the down sampling is performed by using max-pooling layer after each convolutional block. We reveal that this max-pooling causes information loss despite of knowing their importance. Consequently, we propose a better IQA method that replaces the max-pooling layers with strided convolutions to down sample the feature space and since the strided convolution layers have learnable parameters, they preserve optimal features and discard redundant information, thereby improve the prediction accuracy. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
In order to properly evaluate the spatio-temporal variations of groundwater flow, the data obtained in field experiments should be corroborated into numerical simulations. Particle tracking method is a simple simulation tool often employed in groundwater simulation to predict groundwater flow paths or solute transport paths. Particle tracking simulations visually show overall the particle flow path along the entire aquifer, but no previous simulation studies has yet described the parameter values at grid nodes around the particle path. Therefore, in this study, a new technical approach was proposed that enables acquisition of parameters associated with particle transport in grid nodes distributed in the center of the particle path in groundwater. Since the particle tracking path is commonly referred to as streamline, the algorithm and codes developed in this works designated streamline analysis method. The streamline analysis method can be applied in two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element or finite difference grid networks, and can be utilized not only in the groundwater field but also in all fields that perform numerical modeling.
Simultaneous motion is essential in the activities of daily living (ADL). For motion intention recognition, surface electromyogram (sEMG) and corresponding motion label is necessary. However, this process is time-consuming and it may increase the burden of the user. Therefore, we propose a simultaneous motion recognition framework using data augmentation based on muscle activation model. The model consists of multiple point sources to be optimized while the number of point sources and their initial parameters are automatically determined. From the experimental results, it is shown that the framework has generated the data which are similar to the real one. This aspect is quantified with the following two metrics: structural similarity index measure (SSIM) and mean squared error (MSE). Furthermore, with k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) or support vector machine (SVM), the classification accuracy is also enhanced with the proposed framework. From these results, it can be concluded that the generalization property of the training data is enhanced and the classification accuracy is increased accordingly. We expect that this framework reduces the burden of the user from the excessive and time-consuming data acquisition.
The implementation of imaging methods that enable sensitive and specific observation of anatomical structures has been a constant in the evolution of endodontic therapy. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) enables 3-dimensional (3D) spatial anatomical navigation in the 3 volumetric planes (sagittal, coronal and axial) which translates into great accuracy for the identification of endodontic pathologies/conditions. CBCT interpretation consists of 2 main components: (i) the generation of specific tasks of the image and (ii) the subsequent interpretation report. A systematic and reproducible method to review CBCT scans can improve the accuracy of the interpretation process, translating into greater precision in terms of diagnosis and planning of endodontic clinical procedures. MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, Google Scholar, Embase and Scopus were searched from inception to March 2023. This narrative review addresses the theoretical concepts, elements of interpretation and applications of the CBCT scan in endodontics. In addition, the contents and rationale for reporting 3D endodontic imaging are discussed.
This study compares Static Terrestrial Laser Scanning (STLS)with the conventional Total Station (TS) method for the geometric assessment of cylindrical storage tanks. With the crucial need for maintaining tank integrity in the oil and gas industry, STLS and TS methods are evaluated for their efficacy in assessing tank deformations. Using STLS and TS, the roundness and verticality of two cylindrical tanks were examined. A deformation analysis based on American Petroleum Institute (API) standards was then provided. Key objectives included comparing the two methods according to API standards, evaluating the workflow for STLS point cloud processing, and presenting the pros and cons of the STLS method for tank geometric assessment. The study found that STLS, with its detailed and high-resolution data acquisition, offers a substantial advantage in having a comprehensive structural assessment over TS. However, STLS requires more processing time and prior knowledge about the data to tune certain parameters and achieve accurate assessment. The project outcomes intend to enhance industry professionals' understanding of applying STLS and TS to tank assessments, helping them choose the best method for their specific requirements.
