  • Unlike other non-destructive inspection method, AE Structural defects that are likely to grow in the operation status can be detected, and the advantage of being due to the continuous monitoring of large structures has been widely used to evaluate the stability. AE sensor used to detect sound wave that occurs between 20kHz to 20MHz. and Sound wave result may vary depending on sensor's sensitivity. In this paper, Tensile test conducted on STS 304 and SS400, and tries to detect the crack signal. In tensile test, specimens were conducted using different sensor sensitivity to the same tensile test condition. The crack signal parameters divided into 4 types of communities by conducting cluster analysis. It was demonstrated that crack signal of two sensor is not different by statistical analysis of null hypotheses. Based on the results, waveform of this tension test is crack signal.

  • The rapid development of small-scale (1-10 MJ) Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage Systems (SMES) can be explained by real perspective of practical implementation of these devices in electro power nets. However the serious problem of all high mechanically stressed superconducting coils-problem of training and degradation (decreasing) of operating current still exists. Moreover for SMES systems this problems is more dangerous because of pulsed origin of mechanical stresses-one of the major sources of local heat disturbances in superconducting coils. We investigated acoustic emission (AE) phenomenon on model and 0.5 MJ SMES coils taking into account close correlation of AE and local heat disturbances. Two-coils 0.5 MJ SMES system was developed, manufactured and tested at Russian Research Center in the frames of cooperation with Korean Electrical Engineering Company (KEPCO) [1]. The two-coil SMES operates with the stored energy transmitted between coils in the course of a single cycle with 2 seconds energy transfer time. Maximum operating current 1.55 kA corresponds to 0.5 MF in each coil. The Nb-Ti-based conductor was designed and used for SMES manufacturing. It represents transposed cable made of Nb-Ti strands in copper matrix, several cooper strands and several stainless steel strands. The coils are wound onto fiberglass cylindrical bobbins. To make AE event information more useful a real time instrumentation system was used. Two main measured and computer processed AE parameters were considered: the energy of AE events (E) and the accumulated energy of AE events (E ). Influence of current value in 0.5 MJ coils on E and E was studied. The sensors were installed onto the bobbin and the external surface of magnets. Three levels of initial current were examined: 600A, 1000A, 2450 A. An extraordinary strong dependence of the current level on E and E was observed. The specific features of AE from model coils, operated in sinusoidal vibration current changing mode were investigated. Three current frequency modes were examined: 0.012 Hz, 0.03 Hz and 0.12 Hz. In all modes maximum amplitude 1200 A was realized.

  • The acoustic emission (AE) behavior of reinforced concrete beams tested under flexural loading was investigated to characterize and identify the source of damage. This research was aimed at identifying the characteristic AE response associated with micro-crack development, localized crack propagation, corrosion, and debonding of the reinforcing steel. Concrete beams were prepared to isolate the damage mechanisms by using plain, notched-plain, reinforced, and corroded-reinforced specimens. The beams were tested using four-point cyclic step-loading. The AE response was analyzed to obtain key parameters such as the time history of AE events, the total number and rate of AE events, and the characteristic features of the waveform. Initial analysis of the AE signal has shown that a clear difference in the AE response is observed depending on the source of the damage. The Felicity ratio exhibited a correlation with the overall damage level, while the number of AE events during unloading can be an effective criterion to estimate the level of corrosion distress in reinforced concrete structures. Consequently, AE measurement characterization appears to provide a promising approach for estimating the level of deterioration in reinforced concrete structure.

  • The study was carried out to analyze the fracture behavior and the acoustic emission(AE) characteristics and to find the relationship among tensile strength, fracture toughness and cure pressure in owe process of the carbon fiber reinforced composites of two types, $[0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}]_{2S}$ and $[0^{\circ}\;_2/90^{\circ}\;_2]_S$. AE signals were detected during the curing process, tensile tests and fracture toughness tests by acoustic emission(AE) measurements, respectively. Tensile strengths showed that the less cure pressurizing steps and the side of $[0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}]_{2S}$ specimens had the higher strengths than those of the others. Fracture toughness by the change of test temperature showed nearly same values in the same temperature region, but the higher test temperature had the lower fracture toughness values. In order to examine the relationship between fracture behavior of CFRP in tensile and fracture toughness tests and AE signals, the post processing for AE parameters of AE data and the observations of microscope and SEM have been carried out respectively.

  • This study was conducted preliminarily to develop the crack source location technique for plain concrete beam using acoustic emission(AE). Before the main experiment, the test of virtual An source location was achieved in plain concrete block. The sensor layout was mutually compared between triangular layout and rectangular layout. As the results of test, AE source location by triangular layout was evaluated more effective than that by rectangular layout. The specimen to apply he source location technique was man in total nine specimens (each three in 40 %, 50%, 60% of W/C ratio) which the experiment variable was the compressive strength level(W/C ratio). The bending loading method is selected by cyclic loadings to evaluate the degree of concrete damage. It is seen that Kaiser effect and Felicity effect exists through analysis of AE parameters in coming failure experiment. As a result of analyzing the felicity ratio(FR) values, it is shown that this values can be used for evaluating the degree of concerto damage. AE activity is started highly at the 70% of failure load without the compressive strength level. Thus considered by a index in constructing the system of the failure warning at application of the field structure. And the results compared the real cracking location with the source location has perceived by AE monitoring before it is appeared the primary crack by visual observation.

  • Interfacial evaluation and durability of Jute and Hemp fibers/polypropylene (PP) composites were investigated. Moisture content of various treated conditions were measured by thermogravimetic analyzer (TGA). After boiling water test, mechanical properties and IFSS between Jute, Hemp fibers and PP matrix decreased. On the other hand, work of adhesion increased due to swelled fibril by water. Surface energies of Jute and Hemp fibers before and after boiling water test were obtained using dynamic contact angle measurement. IFSS was not always consistent with thermodynamic work of adhesion. In boiling water case, since Jute and Hemp fibers could be swelled by water, surface area and moisture infiltration space increased. Environmental effect on microfailure modes of Jute or Hemp fibers and Jute or Hemp fibers/PP composites were obtained by observing via optical microscope and by monitoring acoustic emission (AE) events and their AE parameters. After boiling water test, unlike Hemp fiber, microfailure process of Jute fiber could occur due to low tensile strength by swelled fibril. In addition, AE events occurred more and AE amplitude and energy became lower than those of before boiling water test.

  • Journal bearings in the rotating machineries are vulnerable to the contamination or the insufficient supply of lubricating oil, which is likely to be the cause of unexpected shutdown or malfunction of these systems. Various destructive and nondestructive testing methods had been used for the reduction of maintenance cost and the operational safety problems due to the accidents related to bearing damages. In this experimental approach, acoustic emission monitoring is employed to the detection of incipient failure caused by intervention of foreign particles most probable in the journal bearing systems. Experimental schedules for the intervention of foreign particles was composed to be more quantitative and systematic than last study in consideration of minimum oil film thickness and particle size. The experiment was conducted under such designed conditions as inserting alumina particles to the lubrication layer in the simulated journal bearing system. Several parameters such as AE rms level, waveform, AE energy distribution and other AE event parameters are used for analysis and characterization of damage source. The results showed that the history of damage was well correlated with the changes of AE rms level and the type of damage source signal can be verified using other informations such as waveform, distributions of AE parameters etc.

  • According to the results of three-point bending tests of rubberized concrete and plain concrete, the parameters such as total fracture energy ($G_F$), initial fracture energy ($G_f$), and tensile strength ($f_t$) are obtained for concrete material. Using ABAQUS software and a bilinear softening fictitious crack model, the crack propagation process was simulated and compared to the experimental results. It is found that the increase of AE hit count has a similar trend with the increase of energy dissipation in FEM simulation. For two types of concretes, both experimental results and numerical simulation indicate that the rubberized concrete has a better fracture resistance.

  • To diagnosis abnormal compressor conditions in an air-conditioner, the acoustic emission (AE) signal, which is derived from wear condition, compressed air, and assembly error, was analyzed experimentally. Burst and continuous type AE signals resulted from metal contact and compressed air, and the raw AE signal of compressors was acquired in the production line. After extracting samples using waveforms, the Early Life Test (ELT) was conducted and the waveform was classified as normal or abnormal. Efficient parameters in the waveform pattern were investigated in time and frequency domains and a diagnosis algorithm for air-conditioners using Neural Network estimation is suggested.
