  • Gas pulsation discharged from the cylinder causes noise in the rotary compressor. Mufflers are usually used to reduce the noise generated by the gas pulsation. The muffler has been designed to maximize the acoustic transmission loss of the muffler. The gas which went through muffler is discharged to the cavity in compressor. Thus, the acoustic characteristics of cavity should be taken into account in muffler design. In this paper, the program for the acoustic substructure synthesis method is developed. This program can be interfaced with SYSNOISE which is commercial acoustic package. Several types of mufflers designed to have the better acoustic performance are suggested in this work and compared with the existing commerical muffler in the compressor. The acoustic performance of mufflers taking into consideration of the cavity in the compressor is also carried out by the developed program.

  • This paper presents an acoustic source localization technique on 2D cavity model in flow using a phased microphone array. Investigation was performed on cavity flows of open and closed types. The source distributions on 2D cavity flow were investigated in an anechoic open-jet wind tunnel. The array of microphones was placed outside the flow to measure the far field acoustic signals. The optimum sensor placement was decided by varying the relative location of the microphones to improve the spatial resolution. Pressure transducers were flush-mounted on the cavity surface to measure the near-filed pressures. It is shown that the propagated far field acoustic pressures are closely correlated to the near-field pressures and their spectral contents are affected by the cavity parameter L/D.

  • In this paper, experimental methods to find acoustic characteristics of acoustically treated air-conditioning duct system are proposed. Existing methods to analyze acoustic properties of duct with absorbent material have dilemma which has to assume the wave in duct to be a plane wave. Under this assumption. applicable frequency limitation makes accurate analysis of practical air-conditioning system impossible. In order to analyze the properties of in-lined treated absorbent with high degree of accuracy, in this experiments the range of exciting frequency of sound source is broadband, which means that source speaker excited higher mode of in-duct sound field. Also, to define the relations of air cavity to the acoustic characteristics, acoustic experiments on ducts with air cavity of different depth are operated. In conclusion, air-cavity makes the absorbing ability of duct improved in low frequency range. Due to the interactions between the air cavity depth and the depth of absorbents, according to depth of cavity, the magnitude of absorption coefficients vs frequencies in specific range is changed. In lower frequency range, the absorption of sound energy by air cavity is more dominant than by absorbent itself, in higher range, the inversion is true.

  • Cavities are inevitable structures in automobile configuration. The flow-induced noise is generated from the wheel housing section by the interaction between a rotating wheel and the unsteady flows in the cavity. In this research the wheel housing was assumed by a rectangular cavity for simplification. We measured the radiated sound from the 2-D cavity without cylinder and from the rotating cylinder in the cavity by using the sound source localization method with an acoustic mirror system. In the 2-D cavity case of low Mach number(Ma=0.029), the sound sources were found to be located near the leading edge of cavity due to the shear layer instabilities. Comparing the cases of the rotating and the non-rotating cylinder, it is observed that the sound Pressure levels around the rotating cylinder in the cavity increased and the main acoustic sources were located at the rear section of the rotating wheel.

  • A linear acoustic analysis has been performed to elucidate damping characteristics of acoustic cavities in a liquid rocket combustor. Results have shown that resonant frequencies of acoustic cavity obtained by classical theoretic approach and by the present linear analysis are somewhat different with each other. This difference is attributed to the limitation of the simplified classical theory. To quantify the damping characteristics, acoustic impedance has been introduced and resultant absorption coefficient and conductance have been evaluated. Satisfactory agreement has been achieved with previous experiment. Finally the design procedure for an optimal tuning of acoustic cavity has been established.

  • Optimal design of a piezoelectric smart structure is studied for cabin noise control. A cubic shaped acoustic cavity with a flat plate which covers one side is taken as the problem. The sensor signal is returned to the actuator through a negative gain. The acoustic cavity is modeled using the modal approach which represents the pressure fields in the cavity as a sum of mode shapes of the cavity with unknown coefficients. By using orthogonality of the mode shapes of the cavity, finite element equation for the structure with the influence of the acoustic cavity is derived. The objective function is the average pressure at a certain region, so-called silent zone, in the cavity and the design variables are the locations and sizes of the piezoelectirc actuator and sensor. The optimal design is performed at several frequencies and the results show a remarkable noise reduction. To see the robustness of the optimally designed result, the configuration is used to examine the noise reduction at different frequencies. By adjusting the gain at each frequencies, it is possible to reduce the noise in comparison with the result when the actuator is not activated.

  • Flow-excited acoustic resonance in ducted cavities can produce high levels of acoustic pressure that may lead to severe damage. This occurs when the flow instability over the cavity mouth, which is created by the free shear layer separation at the upstream edge, is coupled with one of the acoustic modes in the accommodating enclosure. Acoustic resonance can cause high amplitude fluctuating acoustic loads in and near the cavity. Such acoustic loads could cause damage in sensitive applications such as aircraft weapon bays. Therefore, the suppression and mitigation of these resonances are very important. Much of the work done in the past focused on the fluid-dynamic oscillation mechanism or suppressing the resonance by altering the edge condition at the shear layer separation. However, the effect of the downstream edge has received much less attention. This paper considers the effect of the impingement edge geometry on the acoustic resonance excitation and Strouhal number values of the flow instabilities in a ducted shallow cavity with an aspect ratio of 1.0. Several edges, including chamfered edges with different angles and round edges with different radii, were investigated. In addition, some downstream edges that have never been studied before, such as saw-tooth edges, spanwise cylinders, higher and lower steps, and straight and delta spoilers, are investigated. The experiments are conducted in an open-loop wind tunnel that can generate flows with a Mach number up to 0.45. The study shows that when some edge geometries, such as lower steps, chamfered, round, and saw-tooth edges, are installed downstream, they demonstrate a promising reduction in the acoustic resonance. On the other hand, higher steps and straight spoilers resulted in intensifying the acoustic resonance. In addition, the effect of edge geometry on the Strouhal number is presented.

  • Theoretical analysis Is carried out to identify the modal coupling effect between some particular acoustic modes of a vehicle compartment cavity and vibration modes of body panels like side doors, roof or floor. A simplified panel-cavity coupled model is investigated on the coupled resonance frequencies, modes and frequency response characteristics. Through parametric study, It Is possible to explain how the acoustic response of a coupled system will be determined by the vibration and acoustic property of the individual panel and cavity system. Full coupled system shows some interesting features different from those of the semi-coupled system In frequency, mode and acoustic response.
