  • Characteristics of biological hydrogen production rate and organic acid under anaerobic fermentation process were investigated with sugar wastewater. Hydrogen production rate was higher with alkaline pre-treatment than acidic pre-treatment, resulting in 70% increment. An adequate supply of the nutrients (N or P) into raw sugar wastewater could increase hydrogen production rate. Carbohydrate degradation of the anaerobic fermentation process was not directly related with hydrogen production. Sugar wastewater with the addition of the nutrients shows 3 times higher B/A ratio than the raw sugar wastewater. B/A ratio of the wastewater with alkaline pre-treatment and nutrients addition was most higher than other samples, showing 4.02 of B/A ratio. Higher B/A ratio shows higher hydrogen production rate at each sample.

  • In this work, red mud (RM) was chemically modified by 0.1, 1, and 5 M H3PO4 solution to prepare epoxy/RM nanocomposites. The effect of chemical treatment on pH, acid-base values, specific surface area, and porosity of RM surface was analyzed. To estimate the mechanical interfacial properties of epoxy/RM nanocomposites, the critical stress intensity factor (K$_{IC}$) was measured. From the experimental results, it was clearly revealed that the porosity, specific surface area, and acid values of RM surface were developed as the increase of the treatment concentration due to the increase of acidic functional group, including hydroxyl group on RM surface. The mechanical interfacial properties of epoxy/treated-RM nanocomposites were higher than those of epoxy/RM as-received due to an improvement of interfacial bonding between basic matrix and RM surface.

  • The comparison soy protein coagulation by heat-and enzyme-treatment are summarized. The gelation mechanism of glycinin by heating was mainly due to dissociation and aggregation of the basic subunit of 11S globulin. In case of 7S globulin, macro-soluble aggregates may be formed by noncovalent intraction more than 30min at 8$0^{\circ}C$. Whereas, coagulum occured by the microbial enzyme was more minuter than the other Ca-, HCI-coagulum. Heat treatment attacked the basic subunit of 11S globulin and this results agreed very, how-ever, preferred acidic subunit to basic subunit of 11S globulin and attacked the 7S globulin, that could produce coagulum products within 4~5min at $65^{\circ}C$.

  • This study was performed to investigate applicabilities of sewage sludge and papermill sludge as carbon sources in biologically treating abandoned acidic mine drainage, and effects of limestone. In spite of ranging average 3.3 in influent pH, SRB(Sulfate Reducing Bacteria) was well grown. because effluent pH was maintained by alkalinity a little under for whole stages. TCODcr was high in effluent with washing out in early stage. but its concentration was low with passed time and did not cause the problem of secondary pollution. Removal rate of Mn was remarkably low, but in case of heavy metals such as Fe, the fixation trends showed high as the volume of ${SO_4}^2$ reduction increased. In case of mixing sewage sludge and papermill sludge, when their mixing ratio were 1 : 1 and 2 : 1 respectively, rate of ${SO_4}^2$ reduction and removal rate of heavy metals were high. The mixing ratio 1 : 1 was considered as the most appropriate, because degradability of swewage sludge under short time was higher than that of papermill sludge. As a result of investigating efficiencies of limestone and biological treatment, biological treatment excelled limestone in neutralization and removal rate of heavy metals.

  • Mine soils are usually unfavorable for plant growth due to their acidic condition and low contents of organic matter and nutrients. To investigate the effect of organic material and lime on nitrogen processes in an acidic metal mine soil, we conducted an incubation experiment with treating livestock manure compost, dolomite, and oyster shell and measured soil pH, dehydrogenase activity, and concentration of soil inorganic N ($NH_4{^+}$ and $NO_3{^-}$). Compost increased not only soil inorganic N concentration, but also soil pH from 4.4 to 4.8 and dehydrogenase activity from 2.4 to $3.9{\mu}g\;TPF\;g^{-1}day^{-1}$. Applying lime with compost significantly (P<0.05) increased soil pH (5.9-6.4) and dehydrogenase activity ($4.3-7.0{\mu}g\;TPF\;g^{-1}day^{-1}$) compared with applying only compost. Here, the variation in dehydrogenase activity was significantly (P<0.05) correlated with that in soil pH. Soil inorganic N decreased with time by 14 days after treatment (DAT) due to N immobilization, but increased with time after 14 DAT. At 28 DAT, soil inorganic N was significantly (P<0.05) higher in the lime treatments than the only compost treatment. Especially the enhanced dehydrogenase activity in the lime treatments would increase soil inorganic N due to the favored mineralization of organic matter. Although compost and lime increased soil microbial biomass and enzyme activity, ammonia oxidation still proceeded slowly. We concluded that compost and lime in acidic mine soils could increase soil microbial activity and inorganic N concentration, but considerable ammonium could remain for a relatively long time.

  • Biological methods are frequently used for treatment of contaminated air, containing volatile organic compounds and odor compounds in low concentrations and high flow rate of air streams. For more than 20 years. biofilter has been recognized as a cost effective technology for the purification of contaminated air. Most commercial applications before 1990 were for control of odors. In the past decades major progress has been accomplished in the development of vapor phase bioreactor. in particular biotrickling filers. Biotrickling filters are more complex than biofilters. but are usually more effective, especially for the treatment of compounds which are difficult to degrade or compounds that generate acidic by-products. While the level of understanding of biotrickling filtration process for VOCs still remains limited. the evidence success of biotreatment of VOC in air resulted in pursuing active research. This paper presents fundamental and practical aspert of VOCs treatment from air in biotrickling filter. Special emphasis is given to the operating parameters and the factors influencing performance for biotrickling filter.

  • This research was carried out to establish the effective treatment condition and characteristic of wastewater from the electroplating plant of cold rolling mill by using microorganism. Alkaline wastewater and acidic heavy metal wastewater accounted for 64%, 30%, respectively, of the total wastewater. Highly concentrated thiocyanate was 53890 mg/L as COD and it was 53% of total COD, even though it was 0.03% of wastewater from the electroplating plant. When treating mixed wastewater with microorganism, it was easy to remove when SCN concentrations of mixed wastewater was 200 mg/L or less. While the treatment effect of COD-causing materials was low at the concentration of 400 mg/L or less, it implies that highly concentrated thiocyanate contains a large amount of slowly biodegradable organics. When treating with mixed wastewater, pH was 7.33 at the beginning, but after 8 hours it increased to 7.99. This is caused by ammonia which is generated when SCN of highly concentrated thiocyanate was degraded by microorganism.

  • The present study examines the effects of 30 mg/kg butachlor on the cyanobacterial diversity of rice fields in Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Western Bihar in India. A total of 40 samples were grouped into three classes [(i) acidic, (ii) neutral, and (iii) alkaline soils], based on physicochemical and principle component analyses. Acidic soils mainly harbored Westillopsis, Trichormus, Anabaenopsis, and unicellular cyanobacteria; whereas Nostoc, Anabaena, Calothrix, Tolypothrix, and Aulosira were found in neutral and alkaline soils. Molecular characterization using 16S rRNA PCR and DGGE revealed the presence of 13 different phylotypes of cyanobacteria in these samples. Butachlor treatment of the soil samples led to the disappearance of 5 and the emergence of 2 additional phylotypes. A total of 40 DGGE bands showed significant reproducible changes upon treatment with butachlor. Phylogenetic analyses divided the phylotypes into five major clusters exhibiting interesting links with soil pH. Aulosira, Anabaena, Trichormus, and Anabaenopsis were sensitive to butachlor treatment, whereas uncultured cyanobacteria, a chroococcalean member, Westillopsis, Nostoc, Calothrix, Tolypothrix, Rivularia, Gloeotrichia, Fischerella, Leptolyngbya, and Cylindrospermum, appeared to be tolerant against butachlor at their native soil pH. Butachlor-induced inhibition of nitrogen fixation was found to be 65% (maximum) and 33% (minimum) in the soil samples of pH 9.23 and 5.20, respectively. In conclusion, low butachlor doses may prove beneficial in paddy fields having a neutral to alkaline soil pH.

  • Objective: Neuropsychiatric manifestations like depression and cognitive dysfunction commonly occur in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In the context of the brain-gut axis model, colitis can lead to alteration of brain function in a bottom-up manner. Here, the changes in the response of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and inflammation-related markers in the brain in colitis were studied. Methods: Dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) was used to generate a mouse model of colitis. Mice were treated with DSS for 3 or 7 days and sacrificed. We analyzed the gene expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2), and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and the expression of GFAP, in the hippocampus, hypothalamus, and amygdala. Additionally, the levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum cortisol/corticosterone were measured. Results: Alteration of inflammatory-related markers varied depending on the brain region and exposure time. In the hippocampus, COX-2 mRNA, GFAP mRNA, and GFAP expression were upregulated during exposure to DSS. However, in the hypothalamus, COX-2 mRNA was upregulated only 3 days after treatment. In the amygdala, BDNF and COX-2 mRNAs were downregulated. CRP and corticosterone expression increased with DSS treatment at day 7. Conclusion: IBD could lead to neuroinflammation in a bottom-up manner, and this effect varied according to brain region. Stress-related hormones and serum inflammatory markers, such as CRP, were upregulated from the third day of DSS treatment. Therefore, early and active intervention is required to prevent psychological and behavioral changes caused by IBD, and region-specific studies can help understand the precise mechanisms by which IBD affects the brain.
