Extracts active on the growth of food-born microorganisms were prepared from radish by using acetone, methanol and water as the solvents. Strains of bacteria and yeast, such as L. brevis, L. fermentum, L. faecalis, L. mesenteroides, B. subtilis, S. flexneri, S. aureus and C. albicans. Addition of 1 $m\ell$ of acetone extract exhibited the strongest growth effect on L. brevis. The water extracts turned out to stimulate growth of all Lactic acid bacteria. Especially, it was observed that the same material produced the highest stimulatory effect(by about 40-50 times) on L. faecalis and L. fermentum and L. mesenteroides. Also, it was proved to have a weak stimulate effect on C. albicans, S. flexneri and S. aureus. But, on the contrary to this, when applied to B. subtilis it showed growth stimulation by about 10 times.

This study was performed to investigate the cytotoxic activity from Vitex rotundifolia. V. rotundifolia was extracted with methanol, ethanol, and acetone, and then the cytotoxic effect of these extracts was measured by the MTT reduction assay and morphological assay on the HT-29 human colon carcinoma cells. Among the three extracts, the acetone extract showed the highest cytotoxic activity on the HT-29 cells in a dose-dependent manner with an $IC_{50}$ value of 10 ${\mu}g/ml$. The acetone extract was further fractionated sequentially with n-hexane, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, and water layer according to the degree of polarity. The n-hexane layer among the fractioned layers showed inhibitory activity on the growth of HT-29 cells. In addition, n-hexane layer also showed the cytotoxic activity against SW620 human colon carcinoma cells. These result indicated that extracts of V. rotundifolia may contain bioactive materials and could be potential candidates as chemotherapeutic agents against human colon carcinoma cells.

The purposes of this study were aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of water, methanol, and 70% acetone extracts from pepper leaves. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities, reducing power, and chelating effect. Moreover, the effects of the extracts on cell proliferation of breast (MCF7), colon (HCT116), and gastric (MKN45) tumor cells were investigated. Higher extraction yields were obtained with methanol than with 70% acetone and water. Among the three different solvents, 70% acetone extract showed the highest polyphenolic contents. 70% acetone extracts showed higher antioxidant activities compared with other extracts. Also, 70% acetone extract of pepper leaves exhibited higher antiproliferative activity (>80%) against HCT116 and MKN45 cells compared with other samples at the concentration of 1 mg/mL. These results indicate that pepper leaves may serve as potential dietary sources of natural antioxidants and antiproliferative substances.
This study was undertaken to investigate immunochemotherapeutic activity against tumor growth and cytotoxic activity against tumor cell lines. Phellinus linteus (PL), which was artificially cultured in Morus alba, prolonged significantly the survival rate of mice intraperitoneally implanted with sarcoma 180 and inhibited solid tumor growth on mice subcutaneously implanted with sarcoma 180. The acetone precipitate of water extract of PL was better than its water extract. However, PL showed little cytotoxic activity against tumor cell lines.
Antimicrobial activity of bamboo leaves extract on microorganisms related to kimchi fermentation was investigated. Bamboo leaves were extracted with several ogranic solvents such as methanol, acetone, ethyl ether, and ethyl acetate. The bamboo extract with ethyl acetate showed the strongest antimicrobial activity among them. Strong antimicrobial activities of the extract against microorganisms related to kimchi fermentation and food spoilage indicated that the extract had a wide range of antimicrobial spectrum. The antimicrobial activity was especially strong against Brettanomyces custersii, Klebsiella oxytoca, Pichia membranaefaciens which cause kimchi softening. In addition, the antimicrobial activity of bamboo leaves extract was higher than that of 0.5% and 1.0% sorbic acid, and moreover it was stronger in pH 5 compared to pH 7.
In order to confirm the exact antipyretic component in the earthworm, etherial extract of American earthworm(Red Worm) was fractionated into five fractions by using silica gel column chromatography and thin layer chromatography. The fraction including free fatty acids was found to possess artipyretic response and standard arachidonic acid showed marked antipyretic response on typhoid vaccinated rabbits. Arachidonic acid was identified from the free fatty acid fraction of the earthworm by using gas liquid chromatography. Thus it was considered that the antipyretic activity of the free fatty acid may be due to the presence of arachidonic acid. Lipid-free earthworm powder was extracted with phosphate buffer (pH, 8.0, 0.1M) and all the proteins was salted out by ammonium sulfate. The crude precipitate was dialyzed and the impure proteins were eliminated at pH 5.4 and 4.6. The remaining protein solution was fractionated with various concentrations of acetone. The acetone fractions were identified by using S.D.S. polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and disc gel electrophoresis. The precipitate at 85% acetone concentration and the remaining proteins in the supernatant did not exhibit the antipyretic activity.
Santalum album has been used as a folk medicine for treatment of skin diseases, inflammation, gonorrhea, gleet, and cystitis in India and other Asian countries. In a search for possible bioactive agents from natural sources, we found that the various solvent extracts of S. album showed significant antioxidative effect in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity test and moderate other biological functions submitted to the several bioassay systems for whitening and cytotoxicity evaluations. Among the tested extracts displayed DPPH radical scavenging activity, and the 70% acetone extract showed the most potent activity with an $IC_{50}$ value of $18.6\;{\mu}g/ml$, more potent than a positive control, L-ascorbic acid ($IC_{50}$, $28.7\;{\mu}g/mL$). Also, anti-lipid peroxidation, tyrosinase inhibitory, and cytotoxic effects were determined in each experiment. Total phenolic content of 70% acetone extract was found to be 117.1 mg equivalent of gallic acid per g of extract. Previous phytochemical investigation reveals the presence of phenolic compounds. The results indicate that S. album possess potential antioxidant activity and phenolic constituents are responsible for this capacity.
1. L-Tyrosine-${\alpha}$-ketoglutaric transaminase and p-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid oxidase are distributed in Aspergillus oryzae. 2. L-Tyrosine oxidation in extracts of acetone powder, cell free extract and culture liquid of Aspergillus oryzae cultivated in the shaking culture are considerably accelerated by the addition of ${\alpha}$-ketoglutaric acid and then formation of glutamic acid was identified by chromatography method. 3. The roles of ${\alpha}$-ketoglutaric acid and pyridoxal phosphate have been shown to be an amino group acceptor in a transamination reaction. 4. Enzyme systems of an extracts of acetone powder and cell free extract also rapidly oxidized L-tyrosine and p-hydroxyphenlpyruvic acid to homogentisic acid. 5. The optimum pH for L-tyrosine-${\alpha}$-ketoglutaric acid transaminase was pH values of 6.0 and 6.5, and that for p-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid oxidase was at pH values of 7.5.
Lasiodiplodia theobrorme is a pathogen of Java black rot on sweet potato. This fungus infects the tuberous root during storage after harvest. Invasion of the fungus results in the expansion of necrosis sites into the tuberous roots. The resultant necrotic symptom of the tissue is also induced by application of acetone extract of the fungus growing on potato sucrose agar (PSA) culture. The active principles to induce the necrosis are purified from the acetone extract as follows. After evaporation of hexane-benzene-EtOAc (1:2:1, v/v/v) the extract was fractioned on silica gel column, using a solvent gradient system from n-hexane to EtOAc and then to MeOH. The active fractions were purified with HPLC on Nucleosil 50-5 column by eluting n-hexane to EtOAc. Their structures are established by using spectroscopic techniques and synthesis to 4-hydroxymellein and mellein, respectively. Application of small amount of these compounds induce expansion of the necrotic symptom into the tissue and accumulated ipomeamarone. Conclusively, these compounds acted as phytotoxins (inducing necrosis) and as elicitors (eliciting the phytoalexin).
Acetone extracts of 301 strains of marine-derived fungus were tested for antimicrobial activity against three strains of bacteria. The bacteria consisted of three pathogens, Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. Aureus, and multidrug-resistant S. aureus. The acetone extracts of 10 strains (MFA117, MFA130, MFA134, MFA206, MFA217, MFA268, MFA277, MFA291, MFA292, MFA301) showed strong activity, inhibiting 100% of the bacterial growth. These antimicrobial active strains were cultlued in SWS medium on a 1 L scale and the resulting broth and mycelium were extracted to afford mycelium extract (000M) and broth extract (000B), respectively. Antimicrobial activity for all extracts has been tested as the results, the mycelium extract of one strain (217M) and the broth extracts of 9 strains (117B,130B, 134B, 206B, 268B, 277B, 291B, 292B, 301B) exhibited relatively high levels of activity at minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of $500-125\;{\mu}g/mL$ range. Among them, the extracts, 277B, 291B, 292B and 301B showed the most significant antimicrobial activity with $IC_{50}$ values of $125\;{\mu}g/mL$.
