Compo-casting method is one of the popular technique to produce metal based matrix composites. But, one of the main challenges in this process is un-uniform spreading of reinforced subdivisions (particles) inside the metallic matrix and the lack of desirable mechanical properties of the final produced composites due to the low bonding strength among the metal matrix and reinforcement particles. To remove these difficulties and to promote the mechanical properties of these kind of composites, the WARM ARB technique was utilized as supplementary technique to heighten the mechanical and microstructural evolution of the casted Al/Al2O3 composite strips. The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of these composites have been considered versus different WARM ARB cycles by tensile test, average Vickers micro hardness test, wear test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SEM results revealed that during the higher warm- ARB cycles, big alumina clusters are broken and make a uniform distribution of alumina particles. It was shown that cumulating the forming cycles improved the mechanical properties of composites. In general, combined compo-casting and ARB process would consent making Al/Al2O3 composites with high consistency, good microstructural and mechanical properties.
The present study aimed to find a way to create forms that can simultaneously meet several architectural requirements by applying generative design methods specifically focused on cellular automata. In other words, it is tried to find various forms of architecture that all have common features. Because of the useful features of cellular automata, we decided to use it to generate various forms, but make a relation between the discrete nature of cellular automata and the continuous nature of architecture, was the major problem of our project. To achieve this goal, three consecutive stages were designed. In the first stage, independent variables including the location of the building, the height of the building, and the building area were considered as the inputs of the model. In the second stage, after locating the building, the building's main shell was designed as a hidden geometry for the cellular automata and then the cellular automata were determined based on this shell. The main result of this research is establishing a logical relationship between the discrete geometry of the cellular automata and the continuous search space such that it creates various optimized forms. Although we specify the site plan of this project at Iran-Tehran, this research can be generalized to various design sites as well as different projects, allowing the architectsto alter the cell dimensions, cell density, etc., based on their opinion and project needs.
This study presents the application of two indices for the locating of cracks in Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures, as well as the development of their modified forms to overcome limitations. The first index is based on mode shape curvature and the second index is based on the fourth derivative of the mode shape. In order to confirm the indices' effectiveness, both eigenvalues coupled with nonlinear static analyses were carried out and the eigenvectors for two different damage locations and intensities of load were obtained from the finite element model of RC beams. The values of the damage-locating indices derived using both indices were then compared. Generally, the mode shape curvature-based index suffered from insensitivity when attempting to detect the damage location; this also applied to the mode shape fourth derivative-based index at lower modes. However, at higher modes, the mode shape fourth derivative-based index gave an acceptable indication of the damage location. Both the indices showed inconsistencies and anomalies at the supports. This study proposed modification to both indices to overcome identified flaws. The results proved that modified forms exhibited better sensitivity for identifying the damage location. In addition, anomalies at the supports were eliminated.
In this paper, the optimum location of the belt truss-outrigger for a combined system of framed tube, shear core and outrigger-belt truss is calculated. The optimum location is determined by maximization of the first natural frequency. The framed tube is modeled using a non-prismatic cantilever beam with hollow box cross section. The governing differential equation is solved using the weak form integral equations and the natural frequencies of the structure are calculated. The graphs are introduced for quick calculation of the first natural frequency. The location of the belt truss-outrigger that maximizes the first natural frequency of the structure is introduced as an optimum location. The structure is modeled using SAP-2000 finite elements software. In the modelling, the location of the belt truss-outrigger is changed along the height of the structure. With various locations of the outrigger, the lateral deflection of the all stories and axial force in the columns of the outer tube are calculated. The analysis is repeated by locating the outrigger-belt truss at the optimum location. The analysis results are compared and effect of the optimum location on the lateral deflection and the shear lag phenomena are investigated.
In this study, a new strategy is presented to transmit the fundamental elastic beam problem into the modern optimization platform and solve it by using artificial intelligence (AI) tools. As a practical example, deflection of Euler-Bernoulli beam is mathematically formulated by 2nd-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) in accordance to the classical beam theory. This fundamental engineer problem is then transmitted from classic formulation to its artificial-intelligence presentation where the behavior of the beam is simulated by using neural networks (NNs). The supervised training strategy is employed in the developed NNs implemented in the heuristic optimization algorithms as the fitness function. Different evolutionary optimization tools such as genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are used to solve this non-linear optimization problem. The step-by-step procedure of the proposed method is presented in the form of a practical flowchart. The results indicate that the proposed method of using AI toolsin solving beam ODEs can efficiently lead to accurate solutions with low computational costs, and should prove useful to solve more complex practical applications.

To consider the effects of the increasing speed of next-generation high-speed trains, the existing traffic safety code for railway bridges needs to be improved. This study suggests a numerical method of evaluating the new effects of this increasing speed on railway bridges. A prestressed concrete (PSC) box bridge with a 40 m span length on the Gyeongbu track sector is selected as a representative example of high-speed railway bridges in Korea. Numerical models considering the inertial mass forces of a 38-degree-of-freedom train and the interaction forces with the bridge as well as track irregularities are presented in detail. The vertical deflections and accelerations of the deck are calculated and compared to find the new effects on the bridge arising with increasing speed under simply and continuously supported boundary conditions. The ratios between the static and dynamic responses are calculated as the dynamic amplification factors (DAFs) under different running speeds to evaluate the traffic safety. The maximum deflection and acceleration caused by the running speed are indicated, and regression equations for predicting these quantities based on the speed are also proposed.
In this paper, finite element modeling of the laser ultrasonics (LU) process in ablation regime is of interest. The momentum resulting from the removal of material from the specimen surface by the laser beam radiation in ablation regime is modeled as a pressure pulse. To model this pressure pulse, two equations are required: one for the spatial distribution and one for the temporal distribution of the pulse. Previous researchers have proposed various equations for the spatial and temporal distributions of the pressure pulse in different laser applications. All available equations are examined and the best combination of the temporal and spatial distributions of the pressure pulse that provides the most accurate results is identified. This combination of temporal and spatial distributions has never been used for modeling laser ultrasonics before. Then by using this new model, the effects of variations in pulse duration and laser spot radius on the shape, amplitude, and frequency spectrum of ultrasonic waves are studied. Furthermore, the LU in thermoelastic regime is simulated by this model and compared with LU in ablation regime. The interaction of ultrasonic waves with a defect is also investigated in the LU process in ablation regime. Good agreement of the results obtained from the new finite element model and available experimental data confirms the accuracy of the proposed model.
Torque ripple content and variable switching frequency operation of conventional direct torque control (DTC) are reduced by the integration of space vector modulation (SVM) into DTC. Integration of space vector modulation to conventional direct torque control known as SVM-DTC. It had been more frequently used method in renewable energy and machine drive systems. In this paper, SVM-DTC is used to control the rotor side converter (RSC) of a wind driven doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) because of its advantages such as reduction of torque ripples and constant switching frequency operation. However, flux and torque ripples are still dominant due to distorted current waveforms at different operations of the wind turbine. Therefore, to smoothen the torque profile a Neural Network Controller (NNC) based SVM-DTC has been proposed by replacing the PI controller in the speed control loop of the wind turbine controller. Also, stability analysis and simulation study of DFIG using process reaction curve method (RRCM) are presented. Validation of simulation study in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment of proposed wind driven DFIG system has been performed by laboratory developed prototype model. The proposed NNC based SVM-DTC yields superior torque response and ripple reduction compared to other methods.
