  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to explore the developmental direction of the hospital management field that contributes to the academic and practical development of the health care industry and to establish its identity by using the Korean Journal of Health Service Management. Methods: A total of 156 papers were analyzed from April 2007 to December 2018. Frequency analysis and descriptive statistics were performed using SPSS 25.0. Results: The volume of articles published in the hospital management field was decreasing and the ratio was relatively low due to the nature of the journal. The disposition of the papers in the hospital management field excessively focused on the organizational behavior field, and research in the management field that was difficult to access was decreasing. In addition, about 83% of the participants were drawn from hospitals. Conclusions: It is necessary to present guidelines for publication of theses so that a managerial approach can be made rather than an approach to industrial psychological theory verification.

  • Despite the number of developed theories, it still remains a difficult task for some established and emerging scholars in various academic fields to clearly articulate new theories from research studies. This paper reviews and collates the views of scholars on what a theory is and how a good theory can be developed. It explains the concept of a theory, and the different components that make up a theory. The paper discusses the different processes of theory development by emphasizing what theory is and what theory is not. This review found that scholars differ in their definition of a theory, which leads to using terms such as model, paradigm, framework, and theory interchangeably. It found the lack of theoretical constructs in a study to be one of the factors which explains why articles are rejected for publication. This paper may be of benefit to established researchers who may be struggling with theory development, and especially younger academics who are the future of scholarship in various academic fields, particularly in information science.

  • A study of the members of the editorial boards of 16 leading LIS journals shows that the boards vary markedly in size, in diversity (in terms of both gender and nationality) and in the experience and publication/citation profiles (based on Web of Science data) of their board-members. A typical editorial board member will be male, work in the USA, have published their first LIS article in 1995, and have 9.5 publications and 39 non-self citations to those publications, with the publication/citation profiles differing significantly from those of non-board-member contributors to the 16 journals.

  • The purpose of this corpus-based study was to find 4-word lexical bundles in computer science research articles. As the demand for research articles (RAs) for international publication increases, the need for acquiring field-specific writing conventions for this academic genre has become a burning issue. Particularly, one area of burgeoning interest in the examination of rhetorical structures and linguistic features of RAs is the use of lexical bundles, the indispensable building blocks that make up an academic discourse. To illustrate, different academic discourses rely on distinctive repertoires of lexical bundles. Because lexical bundles are often acquired as a whole, the recurring multi-word sequences can be retrieved automatically to make written discourse more fluent and natural. Therefore, the proper use of rhetorical devices specific to a particular discipline can be a vital indicator of success within the discourse communities. Hence, to identify linguistic features that make up specific registers, this corpus-based study examines the types and usage frequency of lexical bundles in the discipline of CS, one of the most in-demand fields world over. Given that lexical bundles are empirically-derived formulaic multi-word units, identifying core lexical bundles used in RAs, they may provide insights into the specificity of particular CS text types. This will in turn provide empirical evidence of register specificity and technicality within the academic discourse of computer science. As in the results, pedagogical implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the unique characteristics of the Korean academic system with regard to brain circulation, with a specific emphasis on the influence of overseas-trained academics on research activities within the Korean academic system. We have analyzed the statistical data on individual characteristics and performances of 48,499 Korean academics in science and engineering. We have examined the results at both the system and individual levels within the broader context of the macro characteristics of the Korean academic system. Our analysis reveals that the total number of domestically-trained academics exceeds the number of overseas-trained academics. However, in terms of research funding, overseas-trained academics tend to receive more funding than domestically-trained academics. Furthermore, after controlling other factors such as funding, personal attributes, and environmental factors, our analysis demonstrates that overseas training has a significant and favorable impact on the publication of internationally renowned journals. As such, the presence of overseas returnees has been essential for the effective functioning of the Korean academic system in the global research network and for conducting high-quality academic research. Therefore, the advantages of dependence on scientific core countries such as the US for overseas training have persisted. Nevertheless, upon scrutinizing the group of recently appointed 5,806 academics exclusively, we have discovered that junior academics who received their education domestically exhibit sufficient academic proficiency compared to their colleagues educated overseas. This observation highlights the potential for the Korean academic system to evolve into a self-sustaining system.

  • A foot has an intimate relation with human's health, thus became an important theme of researches for various academic fields. The aim of this paper is to investigate the trends and tendencies of research on foot measurement in various academic fields and to suggest the directions for the future studies on foot measurement. The collection of data has been accomplished from the papers published in the KSI(Korean Studied Information Service System) journals on foot measurement. The number of papers in 21 journals by 2006 is 79, and the first paper appeared in the Korean Journal of Home Economics in 1986. The number of publication has been increasing every year in various fields of academic including clothing, engineering, medical science and athletics, and measuring methods became diverse and specialized according to the purpose. However, there were some problems such as subjects being biased and similar studies overlapping without interchange between academic fields. Therefore, a research with variety in subject from an infant to the aged and a interdisciplinary research are needed.

  • This study collected data on COVID-19 research papers published in international journals by Korean authors from WoS. Bibliographical analysis was performed on subject categories, institutions, funder distribution and so on. In addition, open access and journal review speed were also analyzed, which play an important role in facilitating academic publishing and distribution. The results showed that COVID-19-related papers published in international journals by Korean authors in 2020 included more papers on some specific fields, such as medicine, biology, and multidisciplinary. These researchers have published lots of papers not only in foreign journals but also in domestic English journals. 94% of papers were open access, and gold open access, which is available immediately after publication, was about 70% of the total. The COVID-19 orthopedic papers produced by Korean researchers were collected from PubMed and analyzed, and the average of review days was about 24 days. The analysis, including open access and review speed, showed that there has been an atmosphere of cooperation in the academic publishing ecosystem after the COVID-19 crisis. It would be desirable to continue this cooperation and address chronic problems in academic publishing system, such as promoting the publication of gold open access and reviewing efficiency.
