  • When measuring the sound absorption coefficient of a specimen, a reverberation room which is costly or an impedance tube which has limitations in measuring low frequencies have been engaged. In this paper, a new measurement method of acoustic impedance or sound absorption coefficient has been suggested, which does not need microphones and only uses electrical impedance measurement data and derived Thiele/Small parameters of a speaker. The theory of this method has been described using equivalent circuit of the loudspeaker and acoustic properties of a test specimen are measured to demonstrate the validity of this method. It was confirmed that this method can easily measure the sound absorption coefficient in the low frequency band, which was previously difficult to trust. The advantages, limitations, and applicability of this method are discussed.

  • We introduce a new velocity sensor, micro-flown sensor, which was developed by H-E de Bree. The sound absorption coefficients of a fiber material with the conventional pressure microphones and the micro-flown sensors were measured and compared. The experimental results show that both sensors could be well applied to measure the sound absorption coefficient but the pressure sensor was rather stable than micro-flown sensor

  • Calibrations of fast-response krypton hygrometers were carried out using a dew-point hygrometer to investigate the changes in their absorption coefficients due to long-term field operation. Absorption coefficients changed proportionally with the number of hours of field operation. The increase in absorption coefficient indicates that the water vapor flux, calculated with the original absorption coefficient, would underestimate the true flux in the field. To minimize the uncertainty in quantifying evapotranspiration and surface energy budget studies, frequent calibrations (for example, every 1500 hours of field operation) of krypton hygrometer are recommended.

  • The sound absorption coefficients of three types commercial fiberboard were experimentally measured under a relatively low frequency range of 50 to 1600 Hz by the two microphone transfer function method. The sound absorption coefficient of 30 mm thick fiberboard was higher than that of 18 mm thick fiberboard at the frequency range of 50 to 1.2 KHz. The sound absorption coefficient of medium density fiberboard was a little higher than that of low density fiberboard.

  • This paper concerns the study of a two-stage absorption heat pump cycle to utilize treated sewage. This two-stage cycle consists of coupling double-effect with parallel or series flow type and single effect cycle so that the first stage absorber and condenser produces hot water to evaporate refrigerant in the evaporator of the second stage. The effects of operating variables such as absorber temperature on the coefficient of performance have been studied for two-stage absorption heat pump cycle. The working fluid is lithium bromide and water solution. The efficiency of the two-stage absorption heat pump cycle has been studied and simulation results show that higher coefficient of performance could be obtained for the first stage with parallel flow type. The optimum ratio of solution distribution can be shown by considering the COP, the crystallization of solution and the generator temperature.

  • Efforts to reduce noise in industrial application fields, such as automobiles, aircrafts, and plants have been gaining considerable attention while a sound proof wall to protect people from the noise has been intensively investigated by many researchers. In this study, our research group suggested creating a new sound proof wall composed of scrap aluminum chips and perforated plates in a commercial polyester sound proof wall, which was then successfully fabricated. This wall's sound absorption characteristics were measured by an impedance tube method. The sound absorption property was evaluated by measuring the Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) to the standard, ASTM C 423-90a. The noise reduction coefficient of the sound proof wall composed of 3.5 vol.% and 7.5 vol.% of scrap aluminum chips relatively increased to 5% and 8% compared to the commercial polyester sound proof wall. The scrap aluminum perforated plate also relatively increased to 13% compared to the commercial polyester sound proof wall.

  • A numerical study has been carried out to find out the optimal design condition of a solar absorption cooling system. The system was composed of solar collectors and an absorption chiller with LiBr/water The System performance with commercial single effect(SE) cycle and a new single effect/double lift(SE/DL) cycle utilizing low temperature hot water was calculated and compared. It was found that the required solar collector area grew exponentially as the overall heat loss coefficient of solar collectors increased. For instance, the required area for cooling capacity of 1 USRT was $17m^2$ if heat loss coefficient was 4 W/$m^2\;cdot\;K$. If heat loss coefficient was doubled($8\;W/m^2\;cdot\;$K), the required collector area was increased by 6 times($100m^2$) .It was also found that the SE-cycle as the heat loss coefficient of solar collectors increased. Generally, a SE/DL-cycle seems to be more advantageous than a SE-cycle if loss coefficient of solar collector is greater than 4 W/$m^2\;cdot\;K$.

  • Intervalence subband absroption of normally incident infrared radiation in p-type InGaAs-InAlAs coupled quantum well (CQW) is theoretically investigated by the multiband effective mass formalism. By solving a 4*4 luttinger-kohn hamitonian, we calculate valence subband structures, intervalence subband transition matrix elements, and absorption coefficient spectrum in the CQW which consists of a wider well, a thinner well and a barreir between them. Using the flexible design parameters given to the valence band CQW structure, we show that the absorption coefficient profile can be tailored. For a carefully designed CQW, theabsorption coefficient cn be made to maintain a large value over a wider wavelength range of incident infrared radiation compared with that shown in intersubband absorption in usual single quantum well.

  • On the absorber of absorption chiller/heater, LiBr solution at high concentration is sprinkled on a bundle of horizontal tube cooled by cooling water. In this case, the conditions of LiBr solution and cooling water have an influence on heat/mass transfer coefficient in this system. Therefor it is important to find optimal operation conditions of absorption chiller/heater to save energy. Heat and mass transfer coefficient increased with the increase of solution flow rate, and also heat and mass transfer rate increased but overall heat and mass transfer coefficient decreased by increasing the solution concentration within the experimental range. The superheating of the solution resulted in superior heat transfer character to a state of equilibrium from the point of heat flux and overall heat transfer coefficient.

  • In this paper, we report measurement of absorption coefficient for various InGaAs MQW QCSE device structures. The absorption spectra over a range of QCSE were obtained from measured photocurrent spectra. The refractive index changes with applied electric field were calculated from the absorption spectra.
