  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between petrographical and engineering properties of granitic rocks, widely used as building and ornamental stones in Korea, at the Namwon are a. This area is one of the most famous area as a domestic dimension stone production. The granitic rocks were examined for grain sizes, modal compositions and then same samples were tested to determine specific gravity, water absorption, porosity, uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, abrasive hardness, P-wave velocity, modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio. It is suggested that the influence of the grain size on the engineering properties is more important than that of the mode of mineralogical compositions. And quartz contents also significantly influence the engineering properties of granitic rocks.

  • Recently, surface texturing by atmospheric laser processing has been received lots of attention to improve the tribological performance of various surfaces and this laser texturing of surfaces could be considered in a large extent to improve tribological performance of PVD coated surface. Surface texturing could be performed by various manufacturing techniques such as indentation with hard materials, ion etching, abrasive jet machining, lithography, and Laser Surface Texturing (LST). Out of all these techniques, however it is generally accepted that laser surface texturing (LST) by atmospheric laser processing offers the most promising process as LST is very fast, environmentally-friendly, easy to control the shape and size of the microdimples. In this work various preliminary experimental results from the laser texturing on the PVD-coated steel substrate will be presented. Our results indicated that laser texturing definitely affect the tribological performance of the surfaces and the size as well as pattern type of laser texturing are one of the key factors. From the wear tests against an alumina counterpart ball at room temperature under oil-lubricated condition, laser surface texturing on the CrZrSiN films reduced the friction coefficients by approximately more than 5 times in the case of narrow patterned surfaces.

  • Microstructure and characteristics of the SiCp/Al-4.5wt%Cu-1wt%Mg composites fabricated by the combination of the compocasting and the pressurized continuous casting process, which is one of the processes to decrease the limitations of the size, and shops of the products, are investigated. The main results are as follows: 1) the SiCp/Al alloy matrix composites can be made continuously 2) as the amount of SiCp addition increases; (1) the degree of directional solidification of matrix structure decreases, and that of SiCp dispersion improves, (2) wear resistance improves, and especially these composites show the excellent wear resistance under the high sliding speed and high final load condition, (3) wear mechanism of these composites is changed from adhesive wear into abrasive wear, and the tendency of that becomes outstanding with increasing sliding speed.

  • We investigated the effects of oxidizer additive on the performance of Cu-CMP process using commonly used tungsten slurry. According to the CMP removal rates and particle size distribution, and the micro- structures of surface layer as a function of oxidizer contents were greatly influenced by the slurry chemical composition of oxidizers. The difference in removal rate and roughness of copper surface are believed to cause by modification in the mechanical behavior of $Al_{2}O_3$ abrasive particles in CMP slurry.

  • This paper presents the result of basic study about corrective polishing for arbitrary surface figure. In this study, we researched polishing characteristics on the working condition of optical glass. The abrasive size, relative velocity and working pressure were selected major factors that affect polishing process. The Preston's equation which is the representative model of polishing process was used to model the unit removal shape. The Preston's coefficient and unit removal function were calculated from the polished surface. Applying these results, we have shown that the systematic corrective polishing of arbitary figure is feasible through experiments and analysis.

  • In micro hole punching process the burr occurs inevitably, but the burr must be minimized in order to improve the quality and accuracy of the product. In this study, magnetic field assisted polishing technique is applied to remove the burr which exists in nozzles for ink-jet printer head and proved to be a feasible for deburring by experiment. The deburring characteristics of sheet metals was investigated changing with polishing time. After the deburring, the burr size has remarkably reduced and roundness of the hole also has improved.

  • A measure for good products manufactured by grinding process is the surface roughness that is affected by a lot of operating parameters such as types of abrasive, grain size, bond material, wheel speed, table speed, depth of cut, hardness of workpiece and stiffness of grinding machine. In this study, an application of the design of experiments was tried for evaluating the effect of operating parameters on the surface roughness. The workpiece was a high speed tool steel(SKH51) and the surface grinding was conducted. In order to obtain the best surface roughness within constraints of the working range, the optimal grinding conditions were selected. The usefulness of this method was evaluated by the statistical strategy.

  • To investigate the effects of pretreatment and substrate bias on the characteristics of the diamond thin films, the thin films were deposited on the p-type Si(100) wafer by MPECVD using mixtures of $H_2$, $CH_4$, and $O_2$ gases. Deposition was carried out at the substrate temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ and at the pressure of 40torr. The effect of the pretreatment on the film formation was the examined by using SiC and diamond powders as abrasive powders. Furthermore, the substrate bias effect on the formation of the diamond film was also examined. The highest nucleation density was observed for the pretreatment with 40~60$\mu\textrm{m}$ size of diamond powders and a negative bias potential(-50V). Many defects and(111) twins in the diamond films were observed.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of micro-burr formation in the cross hatch and deburring in honed surfaces. Two types of micro-burrs formed in the cross hatch were defined as upper edge burr (type A) and side edge burr (type B). The size of micro-burrs were measured for the honed surfaces of several cross hatch angle. Deburring mechanism and system using magneto-electrolytic process including the abrasive pad for mechanic deburring effects together were introduced. Deburring experiments and analysis were carried out to confirm the effectiveness of the deburring process.
