  • Purpose: Alarm symptoms (red flag signs) are crucial indications for management decisions on pediatric gastrointestinal endoscopy. We aimed to identify items in the alarm symptoms and pre-endoscopic investigations that predict abnormal endoscopy results. Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted among children aged under 18 years undergoing endoscopy. The patients were classified into normal and abnormal endoscopic groups. The incidence of alarm symptoms and pre-endoscopic investigations were compared between the groups. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to determine independent risk factors for abnormal endoscopy. Results: Of 148 participants, 66 were classified in the abnormal endoscopy group. Compared with the normal group, the abnormal group had a significantly higher prevalence of alarm symptoms. Moreover, hematemesis/hematochezia, anemia, low hemoglobin level, hypoalbuminemia, rising erythrocyte sedimentation rate, increased serum lipase, and blood urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio were significantly higher in the abnormal endoscopy group than in the normal group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that hematemesis/hematochezia and low hemoglobin level were independent risk factors for abnormal endoscopy. Conclusion: The alarm symptoms and pre-endoscopic investigations were evaluated using predictive factors for abnormal pediatric endoscopic findings. According to multivariate logistic regression analysis, hematemesis/hematochezia and low hemoglobin levels were independent risk factors for abnormal endoscopy.

  • Objectives : Thyroid function is associated with psychiatric disturbance such as mood symptoms, cognitive functions, anxiety and sleep problem. We evaluate the effects of thyroid dysfunction on negative symptoms of schizophrenia, mood symptoms and somatic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. Methods : Sixty five patients with schizophrenia were recruited. The patients were classified into two groups; the patients with the history of abnormal thyroid indices level(group of abnormal thyroid function) and the patients without the history of normal thyroid indices level(group of normal thyroid function). At baseline and 8 weeks later, psychiatric symptoms were assessed with the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS), the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms(SAPS), and Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), Somatosensory Amplication Scale(SSAS). Results : During 8 weeks, there were significant differences in the changes of SANS, BDI, SSAS between group of abnormal thyroid function and group of normal thyroid function. Compared to group of normal thyroid function, group of abnormal thyroid function showed greater reduction of the scores of SANS(23.3%), BDI (19.6%), and SSAS(16.2%), respectively. However, there was no significant correlation between the scores of SANS, BDI, and SSAS. Conclusion : Our study suggested that abnormal thyroid indices would predict the prognosis of negative symptoms, mood symptoms, and somatic symtpoms in patients with schizophrenia.

  • The purpose of this study is to report the hemostatic effects of Kungkwikyoae-tang for abnormal uterine bleeding. Kungkwikyoae-tang has been known as a useful herbal medication for uterine bleeding. We treated patients who had been suffering from abnormal uterine bleeding with herb-medication, acupuncture therapy, pharmacopuncture therapy and moxa therapy. We prescribed Kungkwikyoae-tang three times a day. The improvement of symptoms were measured by checking patient bleeding volume, frequency and other physical signs. After Kungkwikyoae-tang was given, abnormal uterine bleeding volume and frequency was reduced and other physical symptoms were improved. This case study shows that Kungkwikyoae-tang has a hemostatic effects against the abnormal uterine bleeding.

  • The author analysed the routine radiographic changes and clinical symptoms of 205 cases of temporomandibular joint arthrosis. The clinical symptoms of the patients were classified and the morphological ylar head, articular eminence, and articular fossa were analized and discussed view point. The positional changes of condylar head and articular fossa relatation in TMJ arthrosis were observed. The frequencies of coincidence between the site of complaints and the site of the abnormal images which could be detected were examined. The results were obtained as follows; 1. Bone erosion, deformity, marginal proliferation and sclerosis were selected from many abnormal images as the radiographic diagnostic criteria of TMJ arthrotic lesions. 2. Abnormal radiographic findings were revealed in 150 cases (73.9%) of 205 total TMJ arthrosis cases and site with abnormal findings coincided with the site of complaints in 106 cases (70.7%) of 150 cases and coincidence rates were higher above fourth decades than below third decades. 3. Sclerosis of the abnormal radiographic findings could be found more often below third decades than above fourth decades. 4. The positional changes of condylar head were revealed in 176 cases (85.9%) of 205 total cases. 5. Pain complaints were revealed in 170 cases(82.9%) and clicking sounds were revealed in 120 cases (58.6%) of clinical symptoms of TMJ arthrosis. 6. No tendency was found so far the differential diagnosis between pain dysfunction syndrom and osteoarthrosis of TMJ.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate level of understanding of symptoms appearing after wearing rigid gas permeable contact lens for optometrists, and if they were educated high about rigid gas permeable contact lens, they could increase the probability of wearing success of rigid gas permeable contact lens as dividing into an adaptative symptoms and an abnormal symptoms. For 96 optometrists a questionnaire about apparatuses, protocol and experience for prescription of rigid gas permeable contact lens and level of understanding of symptoms appearing after wearing rigid gas permeable contact lens was performed. Results showed that level of understanding of rigid gas permeable contact lens was very low, and education was performed for optometrists.

  • Objectives: This case study reports on improvements after treating patients who had abnormal liver function values in Soyangin gyolhyungjeung with Soyangin hyeongbangdojeok-san-gami.Methods: The study was carried out with three patients who showed abnormal liver function values in Soyangin gyolhyungjeung. Liver function tests (LFT) and numerical rating scales (NRS) were used to evaluate symptoms. Results: After we treated three patients with Soyangin hyeongbangdojeok-san-gami, their symptoms and LFT results had improved considerably. Conclusions: Soyangin hyeongbangdojeok-san-gami appears to have a useful effect on abnormal liver function values in Soyangin gyolhyungjeung. Further clinical studies are needed to verify these findings.
