The infrared, Raman, and jet-cooled laser-induced fluorescence excitation spectra of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene have been recorded and analyzed. The observed vibrations have been assigned to understand the conformational behaviors in its electronic ground (S0) and excited (S1) states. Ab initio at the HF/6-31G** level and molecular mechanics (MM3) force field calculations have been carried out to generate the complete normal mode frequencies of the molecule in its S0 state. The vibrational frequencies calculated from the ab initio method show a better agreement with the observed infrared and Raman frequencies than those calculated from the MM3 method. In several cases, the normal mode calculations were very helpful to clarify some ambiguities of previous assignments. In addition, the ring inversion process between two twisted conformers of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene has been reexamined utilizing ab initio calculation. The results show that the ring inversion energy is in the range of 3.7-4.3 kcal/mol which is higher than the previously reported AM1 value of 2.1 kcal/mol.
A quantum-chemical investigation on the conformations and electronic properties of trans(diphenyl-diheterocyclic) ethenes(t-PHEs) as building block for fully $\pi$-conjuated polymer are performed in order to display the effects of heterocyclic ring substitution. Structures for the molecules, t-PHEs were fully optimized by using semiempirical AM1, PM3 methods, and ab initio HF methods, with 6-31G basic set. The potential energy curves with respect to the change of single are obtained by using ab initio HF/6-31G basic set. The curves are not similar shapes in the molecules with respect to heterocyclic rings. It is shown that the steric repulsion interactions between phenyl ring and heterocyclic ring are subjected to different type with the respect to each heterocyclic ring. Electronic properties of the molecules were molecules were obtained by applying the optimized structures and selected geometries to the extended Huckel method. To investigate the change of HOMO-LUMO gap with respedt to the torsion angle, we select the optimized structures. By using the results, the dependency of conjugation for the energy gaps is analyzed. For t-PHE the energy gap increase up to 0.52 eV compared with its planar structure. In the cases of t-PHE and t-PHE, the energy gap increase by 1.29 and 1.15 eV, respectively, compared with its planar structure.
The structures and energies of p-tert-butylcalix[4]crown-6-ether(1) in various conformers and their alkyl ammonium complexes have been calculated by ab initio HF/6-31G quantum mechanics method. We have tried to obtain the relative affinity of partial-cone and 1,3-alternate conformers of 1 for alkyl ammonium guests by comparison with its cone-shaped analogue. We have also calculated the relative complexation efficiency of these host-guest complexes focusing on the binding sites of $crown-\sigma-enther$ moiety or benzene-rings pocket of the host molecule 1. These calculations revealed that the crown moiey has better complexation efficiency than upper rim part of calyx[4]arene that is in similar trend to the cone-shaped complexes.

In this paper we investigate (using AM1 semi-empirical as well as HF methods at the STO-3G, 3-21G, 6-31G, 6-$31G^*$ and 6-31+$G^{**}$ level) the conformations, geometrical parameters, Mulliken charges, and solvation effects of the triphosphate form of AZT (AZTTP), as well as the thymidine nucleotide (dTTP) structure. Our calculated geometrical parameters and Mulliken charges, with and without solvation effects, are correlated with recent experimental results.
We report here the results on N-acetyl-N"-methylamide of oxazolidine (Ac-Oxa-NHMe) calculated using the ab initio molecular orbital method with the self-consistent reaction field (SCRF) theory at the HF level of theory with the 6-31 +G(d) basis set. The displacement of the $\gamma$-$CH_2$ group in proline ring by oxygen atom has affected the structure of proline, cis-trans equilibrium, and rotational barrier. The up-puckered structure is found to be prevalent for the trans conformers of the Oxa amide. (omitted)
Electrophilic substitutions on β-position of 2,5-dimethyl pyrrole have been investigated theoretically. The electron donating methyl groups enrich electron densities on C-3, C-4 positions and π* interactions with methyl groups substituted on C-2 and C-5 positions pushed up the HOMO level of the pyrroles consequently induce rapid substitutions on C-3, C-4 sites. Substitution of phenylsulfonyl group on nitrogen stabilized LUMO levels through weak π bonding interactions. Unexpected deoxidation reaction underwent on the sulfonyl group substituted at C-3 position. The structures were solved by X-ray crystallography. Meanwhile, gas phase HF/6-31G* and density functional method (B3LYP/6-31G*) calculations gave favorable energies for 1-phenylsulfinyl pyrrole (6) over 3-phenylsulfinyl pyrrole (5) by 3.6-4.7 kcal/mol which is contrary to the experimental result. However the methods involve the effects of molecular polarizability and solvent, molecular dynamics (MD) and ab-initio self consistent reaction field (SCRF) calculations showed same trend as experiments. According to MD calculations, compound 5 is more stable than compound 6 by 4.15 kcal/mol and the SCRF, HF/6-31G* calculations gave more stable energy value for structure 5 than 6 by 0.03 kcal/mol.
The hydrogen-bonding interactions between thioacetamide (TA) and urea derivatives such as tetramethylurea (TMU) and dimethyldiphenylurea (DMDPU) have been studied using near-infrared absorption spectroscopy. Thermodynamic parameters for the interactions between TA and urea derivatives were determined by analyzing the $v^{as}_{N-H}$+Amide Ⅱ combination band of TA at 1970 nm. The ΔH° values, indicating the intrinsic strength of hydrogen bonding, are - 23.0 kJ/mole and - 19.8 kJ/mol for TMU and DMDPU, respectively. This is well explained by the inductive effects of substituents. Ab initio molecular orbital calculations for the proton affinity of TMU, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) in gas phase have been carried out at HF/3-21G ad HF/6-31G(d) levels, showing that the proton affinity of TMU is larger than that of DMA, which agrees well the experimental results.

We report here the results on N-acetyl-N'-methylamide of 4-fluoroproline (Ac-Flp-NHMe) calculated using the ab initio molecular orbital method with the self-consistent reaction field (SCRF) theory at the HF level with the 6-31+G(d) basis set to investigate the stereoelectronic effects on the conformational preference of proline depending on the cis/trans peptide bonds and down/up puckerings along the backbone torsion angle $\square$ in the gas phase, chloroform, and water. In the gas phase, all potential energy surfaces for Ac-Flp-NHMe are quite similar to those of Ac-Pro-NHMe, except that up-puckered conformations are more stabilized than down-puckered ones. In chloroform and water, polyproline structures become dominant, whose populations are larger than those of Ac-Pro-NHMe. In chloroform and water, the populations of polyproline II (i.e., tF conformations) are quite similar to each other, but those of polyproline I (i.e., cF conformations) are larger by 5% in water than in chloroform. In particular, all cis populations for Ac-Flp-NHMe in the gas phase, chloroform, and water are decreased than those of Ac-Pro-NHMe.
In order to consider the reduced mass effects on the out-of-plane ring inversion vibration of 1,3-CHD, the vector-based computer program has been written and the kinetic energy expansion function for the large amplitude ring inversion vibration has been calculated using this program. The structural parameters for the calculations have been determined from the ab initio HF/6-31G** calculation. The potential energy function for the out-of-plane ring inversion vibration of 1,3-CHD has been determined from the kinetic energy expansion function and previously reported low-frequency Raman data. The vibrational Hamiltonian calculation including kinetic energy expansion function made it possible to determine the more reliable out-of-plane potential energy function for the ring inversion of 1,3-CHD.
A new hydrazone derivative compound has been synthesized and characterized by IR, $^1H$-NMR, $^{13}C$-NMR and UV-vis. spectroscopy techniques, elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD). The new compound crystallizes in monoclinic space group C2/c. In addition to the crystal structure from X-ray experiment, the molecular geometry, vibrational frequencies and frontier molecular orbitals analysis of the title compound in the ground state have been calculated by using the HF/6-31G(d, p), B3LYP/6-311G(d, p) and B3LYP/6-31G(d, p) methods. The computed vibrational frequencies are used to determine the types of molecular motions associated with each of the observed experimental bands. To determine conformational flexibility, molecular energy profile of (1) was obtained by semi-empirical (AM1) calculation with respect to a selected degree of torsional freedom, which was varied from $-180^{\circ}$ to $+180^{\circ}$ in steps of $10^{\circ}$. Molecular electrostatic potential of the compound was also performed by the theoretical method.
