  • Pseudospectral Hartree-Fock(PSHF) gradient calculations with $6-31G^{**}$ basis set have been carried out to determine the structure of D-Asparagine molecule $(C_4N_2O_3H_8)$ with improved grids and with the BFGS method. The modified PSHF method, despite partial optimization of the gradient code, turned out to be still faster than the conventional ab initio method, GAUSSIAN 90 program by more than twice. The optimum geometry of D-Asparagine obtained by the PSHF method is in good agreement with those calculated by the GAUSSIAN 90 program (within 0.0036 ${\AA}$ for bond lengths, 0.8 degrees for bond angles, and 1.6 degrees for torsional angles) except for three torsional angles. Here, rather large discrepancy of these three torsional angles (5-6 degrees) is attributed to the small differences in the optimum bond lengths and angles between the PSHF and GAUSSIAN 90 calculations.

  • 13C, 15N, and 29Si NMR chemical shifts have been computed for selected X-substituted silatranes (X=Cl, F, H, CH3) using Gauge-Including Atomic Orbitals (GIAO) at the Hartree-Fock level of theory. The isotropic 13C chemical shifts are largely insensitive to substituent-induced structural changes. In this study, the isotropic 13C chemical shifts between 1-methyl- and 1-hydrogensilatranes by GIAO-SCF calculation at the HF/6-31G level are very similar. But the results of 1-chloro- and 1-fluorosilatranes are about 4 ppm different from the experimental values. In contrast, the isotropic 15N and 29Si chemical shifts and the chemical shielding tensors are quite sensitive to substituent-induced structural changes. These trends are consistent with those of the experiment. The isotropic 15N chemical shift demonstrates a very clear correlation with Si-N distance. But in case of 29Si the correlations are not as clean as for the 15N chemical shift; the calculated variation in the 29Si chemical shift is much larger.

  • Ab initio calculations with various basis sets have been carried out to investigate the geometries and ring inversion barrier of $R_2TiC_3H_6\;and\;R_2TiS_3$, R=Cp and Cl. Optimized geometries of $R_2TiC_3H_6$ showed the four membered ring was planar on Cs symmetry. However, $R_2TiS_3$ complexes were optimized to be stable in the puckered form. The smallest Basis III with STO-3G on Cp ligands gave reasonable results for the calculations of metallocene. The energy barrier for the ring inversion of metallacyclosulfanes, $Cp_2TiS_3$ was computed to be 8.72 kcal/mol at MP2 level. For the Cl system, we reproduced the molecular structure and ring inversion energy with Basis V.

  • Vibrational properties of dopamine neutral species in powder state have been studied by means of the normal mode analysis based on the force constants obtained from the density functional calculation at B3LYP level and the results of Fourier trans form Raman and infrared spectroscopic measurements. Ab initio calculation at MP2 level shows that the trans conformer of dopamine has higher electronic energy about 1.4 kcal/mol than those of the gauche+ and the gauche-conformers, and two gauche conformers have almost the same energies. Free energies calculated at HF and B3LYP levels show very similar values for three conformers within 0.3 kcal/mol. Empirical force field has been constructed from force constants of three conformers, and refined upon ex-perimental Raman spectrum of dopamine to rigorous values. The major species of dopamine neutral base in the powder state is considered a trans conformer as shown in the crystallographic study of dopamine cationic salt.

  • Nature of palladium(Ⅱ) complexes with 7-membered chelates was studied by experimental and theoretical methods on a Pd(L)Cl2 system, where L is Ph2PNHCH2CH2NHPPh2(L1), Ph2PNHC6H4NHPPh2(L2). The palladium(Ⅱ) complexes were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV, 1H, and 31P NMR spectroscopy. Ab initio calculations with geometry optimizations were also performed for related model systems, Pd(L)Cl2; L=R2PNH(CH2)2NHPR2(L3), R2PNHC6H4NHPR2(L4), R2P(CH2)4PR2(L5), R2PCH2(C6H4)CH2PR2(L6); R=H, CH3.

  • Solvolyses of methanesulfonyl chloride (CH3SO2Cl) in water and methanol have been studied theoretically using ab initio self-consistent reaction field (SCRF) molecular orbital method. All stationary structures including transition state on the potential energy surface in solution have been found and compared with the gas phase structures. The overall reaction occurs via a concerted SN2 mechanism with a non-cyclic trigonal bipyramidal transition state, and the activation barrier is lowered significantly in solution. The transition state for the hydrolysis reaction is looser than that for the methanolysis reaction, and this is in accord with the experimental findings that an SN2 type mechanism, which is shifted toward an SN1 process or an SAN process in the hydrolysis and alcoholysis reaction, respectively, takes place. The catalytic role of additional solvent molecules appears to be a purely general-base catalysis based on the linear transition structures. Experimental barrier can be estimated by taking into account the desolvation energy of nucleophile in the reaction of methanesulfonyl chloride with bulk solvent cluster as a nucleophile.

  • The effects on the ferromagnetism of the O or Zn defect in Cu-doped ZnO with the concentration of 2.77-8.33% have been investigated by the first-principles calculations. The Cu doping in ZnO was calculated to be a kind of p-type ferromagnetic half-metals. When the Zn vacancy exists in Cu-doped ZnO, the Cu magnetic moment increases, while for the O vacancy it is reduced. It is noticeable that the ferromagnetic state was originated from the hybridized O(2p)-Cu(3d)-O(2p) chain formed through the p-d coupling. The carrier-mediated ferromagnetism by nitrogen or fluorine does not depend on their concentration.

  • A simple correlation between cross interaction constants ${\rho}_{ij}$ and bond lengths in the transition state was obtained ; it has been shown that ${\rho}_{ij}$ corresponds to force constant of activation, which in turn is related to bond length by Badger's rule involving only universal constants. A satisfactory correlation between 4-31G ab initio calculated values of bond length and force constant for C-X streching in the transition state of the methyl transfer reaction, $X^-\;+\;CH_3X\;=\;XCH_3\;+\;X^-$, indicated that Badger's rule can be extended to bonds in the transition state. Independence of ${\rho}_{ij}$ values from the variable charge transmission of reaction centers has been demonstrated with nearly constant, experimentally determined I${\rho}$XYI values, and hence similar degree of bond formation, for various $S_N2$ reactions.

  • MNDO and ab initio calculations for gas phase reactions of alkoxide-exchange at silicon and carbon centers have been performed. Results show that MNDO values of ${\Delta}$E's of these reactions closely parallel those of the STO-3G method. The alkoxide-exchange at silicon is shown to be facile due to the formation of stable five-coordinate intermediate while the reaction at carbon is predicted to proceed with high barrier; the difference in this substitution behavior between carbon and silicon is shown to be due to an easy valence shell expansion of silicon in accommodating an extra bond in the formation of stable five-coordinate intermediates.

  • The B3LYP method based on the density functional theory(DFT) is shown to be much better than the ab initio MP2 method for structural determination of diphosphadithiatetrazocine systems having transannular S--S bonding. The presence of bonding between the two sulfur atoms across the cyclic ring is theoretically confirmed in the case of the neutral diphosphadithiatetrazocine. The S--S dobding disappears in the ionized species. The planarity of the dicationic heterocyclic ring system turns out to be closely associated with the $\pi-electron$ delocalization over the entire ring as well as the N-S-N bonds, which become stiffened upon ionizaiton. In the case of dianionic species, the chair-boat and chair conformers are nearly degenerate and far more stable than the crown conformer.
