  • TiC-$TiB_2$-SiC system was a ternary eutectic, whose eutectic composition was 34TiC-$22TiB_2$-44SiC (mol%). TiC-$TiB_2$-SiC ternary eutectic composite were synthesized by a floating zone method using TiC, $TiB_2$ and SiC powders as starting materials. The TiC-$TiB_2$-SiC eutectic composite showed a lamellar texture. TiC(022), $TiB_2(010)$ and SiC(111) of the eutectic composite were perpendicular to the growth direction. TiC-$TiB_2$-SiC ternary eutectic composite had specific relationship among the crystal planes: TiC[011]//$TiB_2[010]$//SiC[112], TiC(200)//$TiB_2$(001)//SiC(402) and $TiC(1\bar{1}1)$//$TiB_2(101)$//SiC(220).

  • The tribological properties of TiC, TiN and TiC/TiN coatings on steels prepared by the cathodic-arc (CA) ion plating technique were investigated. Experiments were carried out on a tribo-test machine using a Falex journal V block system. The friction and wear characteristics of the coatings were determined by varying the applied load and sliding speed. The TiC, TiN and TiC/TiN coatings markedly increased the tribological characteristics of the surface. As far as a single layer coating was concerned, TiN goes better results than TiC. However, the TiC/TiN multilayer coating performed better than either single layer coating. The major factor in the improved performance of the multilayer coating was the role of TiC in improving the adhesion between the external TiN layer and the substrate steel.

  • $TiH_2$ nanopowder was made by high energy ball milling. The milled $TiH_2$ and CNT powders were then simultaneously synthesized and consolidated using pulsed current activated sintering (PCAS) within one minute under an applied pressure of 80 MPa. The milling did not induce any reaction between the constituent powders. Meanwhile, PCAS of the $TiH_2$-CNT mixture produced a Ti-TiC composite according to the reaction ($0.92TiH_2+0.08CNT{\rightarrow}0.84Ti+0.08TiC+0.92H_2$, $0.84TiH_2+0.16CNT{\rightarrow}0.68Ti+0.16TiC+0.84H_2$). Highly dense nanocrystalline Ti-TiC composites with a relative density of up to 99.7% were obtained. The hardness and fracture toughness of the dense Ti-8 mole% TiC and Ti-16 mole% TiC produced by PCAS were also investigated. The hardness of the Ti-8 mole% TiC and Ti-16 mole% TiC composites was higher than that of Ti. The hardness value of the Ti-16 mole% TiC composite was higher than that of the Ti-8 mole% TiC composite without a decrease in fracture toughness.

  • Titanium carbide(TiC) and titanium nitride(TiN) flims were deposited on $Si_3N_4$-TiC composite cutting tools by chemical vapor deposition(CVD) using $TiCl_4-CH_4-H_2$ and $TiCl_4-H_2-N_2$ gas mixtures, respectively. The nonmetal to metal ratio of deposit increases with increasing $m_{C/Ti}$(mole ratio of CH$_4$ to TiCl$_4$ in the input) for TiC coatings and $m_{N/Ti}$(mole ratio of N$_2$ to TiCl$_4$ in the input) for TiN coatings. The nearly stoiahiometric films could be obtained under the deposition condition of $m_{C/Ti}$ between 1.15 and 1.61 for TiC, and that of $m_{N/Ti}$ between 25 and 28 for TiN. Also maximum microhardness of the coatings can be obtained in these ranges. The interfacial region of TiC coatings on $Si_3N_4$-TiC ceramics is wider than that of TiN coatings according to Auger depth profile analysis, which indicates good interfacial bonding for TiC. Experimental results show that TiC coatings have an randomly equiaxed structure and Columnar structure with(220) preferred orientation can be obtained for TiN coatings. And, multilayer coatings have a dense and equiaxed structure.

  • SiC-TiC composites have been fabricated by using a mechanochemical processing of a mixture of Si, Ti, and C at room temperature and subsequent hot pressing. TiC powders have been obtained by the mechanochemical processing of a mixture of Ti and C whereas SiC powders has not been obtained from a mixture of Si and C. By using the exothermic reaction between Ti and C, SiC-TiC powder could be obtained from the mixture of Si, Ti, and C using the mechanochemical processing for more than 12h. The X-ray diffraction analysis has shown that the powder subjected to the mechanochemical processing consisted of the particles having crystallite size below 10nm. Fully densified SiC-TiC composites have been obtained by hot-pressing of the powder at 1850$\^{C}$ for 3h and it has shown comparable mechanical properties to those of the SiC-TiC composites prepared from the commercially available SiC and TiC powders. Flexural strength of 560 MPa and fracture toughness of 4.8 MP$.$am$\_$1/2/ have been shown for the SiC-TiC composites with composition corresponding to 0.75:0.25:1 mole ratio of Si:Ti:C.

  • This study has been carried out to investigate the effect of reaction milling time on the synthesis of Ti- TiC p powder synthesised from the elemental titanium and activated carbon by reaction milling(RM), and the effect of vacuu urn hot pressing temperature and TiC volume fraction on microstructural and mechanical properties of Ti- TiC comp posite $\infty$ns이idated by vacuum hot pressing(VHP).T The elemental powders of titanium and activated carbon can be converted into Ti- TiC composite powders by react tion milling for about 300hours, and were the average grain size of the as- milled powders has been measured to be a about $5\mu\textrm{m}$. The relative density of Ti- TiC VHPed above $1000^{\circ}C$ during Ihr is about 98% and the mechanical properties o of In- situ Ti- TiC composites are improved by TiC particle dispersed uniformly on titanium matrix. In order to investig gate thermal stability of Ti- TiC composite, after annealing at $600^{\circ}C$ for 80hrs micro- Vickers hardness have been perf formed, and the values have been shown little changed as compared with those before annealing. The compact has b been tested on high temperature compressive test at $700^{\circ}C$ and has showed a high temperature compressive strength of 330MPa in a Ti- 20vol% TiC.

  • Titanium carbide(TiC), Titanium nitride(TiN), and Titanium carbonnitride(Ti(C,N)) films were deposited on $Si_3N_4$-TiC composite cutting tools by chemical vapor deposition(CVD) using $TiCl_4-CH_4-H_2$, $TiCl_4-N_2-H_2$, and $TiCl_4-CH_4-N_2-H_2$ gas mixtures, respectively. The experimental results indicate that TiC coatings compared with TiN coatings on $Si_3N_4$ -TiC ceramic have an improved microstructural property, good thermal shock resistance, and good interfacial bonding. However TiN coatings compared with TiC coatings have a low friction coefficient with steel and good chemical stability. It is found by cutting test that coated insert compared with $Si_3N_4$-TiC ceramic have a superior flank and crater wear resistance. And multilayer coating compared with monolayer coating shows a improved wear resistance.

  • A new synthesis process for nano laminating Ti$_3$SiC$_2$ has been developed using TiCx (x=0.67) and Si powder as starting materials by a reaction hot pressing. Bulk Ti$_3$SiC$_2$ was fabricated using a green body consisting of TiCx and Si by a hot pressing under the pressures of 25 MPa at 1420-1550 $^{\circ}C$ for 90 min. The synthesized Ti$_3$SiC$_2$ was consisting of only TiCx and Ti$_3$SiC$_2$. The relative density of sintered bulk Ti$_3$SiC$_2$ was increased as the hot pressing temperature was increased, which was mainly due to the increase in TiCx contents in synthesized Ti$_3$SiC$_2$. The synthesized Ti$_3$SiC$_2$ bulk was consisted of nano sized lamella structure of 20-100 nm in thickness. It was found that TiCx particles in Ti$_3$SiC$_2$ would increase the 3-point bending strength of synthesized Ti$_3$SiC$_2$ bulk. The maximum 3-P. bending strength of synthesized Ti$_3$SiC$_2$ bulk was more than 800 MPa. The Vickers hardness of synthesized Ti$_3$SiC$_2$bulk was as low as 5 Gpa, which was decreased with the indentation load. The quasi-plastic deformation behaviors were observed around indentation mark on Ti$_3$SiC$_2$.

  • The extended $H{\ddot{u}}ckel$ method is employed to analyze the interaction of carbon monoxide with the TiC(001) surfaces, both perfect and containing carbon vacancies. CO exhibits a similar ${\sigma}$-donation interaction for both $Ti_{25}C_{25}$ and $Ti_{25}C_{23}$ clusters, as deduced from the fact that the populations of the CO $5{\sigma}$ orbital are identical upon adsorption, but it bonds more strongly with the $Ti_{25}C_{23}$ than with the $Ti_{25}C_{25}$ because the metal d electron density in $Ti_{25}C_{23}$ provides ${\pi}$ back-bonding interactions with CO that are absent in $Ti_{25}C_{25}$. This work suggests that a difference in reactivity toward CO of stoichiometric TiC and TiC with carbon defects is connected with the occupancy of $2{\pi}^*$ orbitals that leads to a significant weakening of the C-O bond.
