  • Deep-water sonar transducers of FFR (Free Flooded Ring) type have been designed using a coupled FE-BEM. The proposed sonar transducers are composed of piezoelectric ceramic tubes and structural steel materials for simple fabrication. In order to have an omnidirectional beam pattern around 30kHz, a conic steel is placed below a piezoelectric tube or a steel disc is placed between two piezoelectric tubes. The dynamics of the sonar transducer is modelled in three dimensions and is analyzed with external electrical excitation conditions. Various results are available such as directivity patterns and transmitting voltage responses. The most optimal structure and dimensions of the steel material were calculated, so that the beam patterns of the sonar transducers had +/- 3dB omnidirectivity at 30kHz.

  • Sidescan sonar uses the fan type beam which has horizontally narrow and vertically somewhat wide beam pattern. To construct such a beam we will use an array of transducers. In case of using single transducer it must have a high frequency to have the fan type beam, but in case of using an array it must have to be high frequency. We are planning to use 30 kHz transducers for our sidescan sonar under development. This paper shows ways of designing a narrow beam for the sidescan sonar system by illustrating various shapes of the beam patterns.

  • The transducers used in active sonar on surface ships are packed in a specific geometry in the array drum in order to meet the requirements such as the source level, directional beam pattern, etc. This paper describes the acoustic characteristics of the cylindrical array which is based on a 64 vertical staves arrangement, each stave composed 5 independent transducers. Firstly, the single transducer on the rigid baffle in the water is analyzed with the Finite Element Method. From the result of the FE analysis nodal velocities on the radiation surface is calculated and used with the boundary conditions of the transducers mounted on the array drum. Then the acoustic pressure is calculated in the field points using the Boundary Element Method and the other acoustic informations, the source level, beam pattern, near field and far-field distance, were acquired.

  • The array equations are commonly used for analysis and conceptual design of active sonar projector arrays. Calculation of the radiation impedance matrix poses a major computational bottleneck for the solution of the array equations, which leads to a dramatic increase in computational load as the number of constituent transducers increases. Here, we propose an iteration-based solution method that does not require the calculation of the radiation impedance matrix, as a computationally efficient alternative to the status quo. The validity of the iteration-based analysis is judged against the full finite-element analysis that includes the entire array as well as the medium. The array equations for the 1/3-sector of a cylindrical array comprised of 48 Tonpilz transducers are augmented by the lumped element models, and are solved iteratively for the acoustic and electro-mechanical characteristics. The iteration-based analysis exhibits rapid convergence and accuracy comparable with the FE analysis. Simulations also reveal that the acoustic coupling between transducers has more pronounced effects on the electro-mechanical characteristics of individual transducers than the acoustic performance of the array.

  • Echo sounder and Doppler sonar are to theultra-sonic transducers for measuring the depth and the ship's speed respectively. To measure the depth and speed with a single transducer, it is required to control the ultra-sonic beam to optional direction. In the past, the direction of the transducer itself is varied, but such a method provoked much problems in the mechanical design of the equipment. This paper deals with the method to control beam direciton by the phase control of the plural arrangement of transducers, and the results are studied by a computer simulation. The remarkable results of the study is condensed as follows; 1. The greater the interval of arrangement between transducers, the sharper the radiation pattern is, but in this case, the level of undesired sidelobe is also increased. 2. The control of radiation pattern up to 60 degree can be achieved by an adequate arrangement of more than 10 transducers. 3. It is shown that a simultaneous measurement of both depth and speed can be achieved by alternating directivity of the pulse by the method proposed in this paper.

  • A piezoelectric flextentional sonar transducer has been simulated using a coupled FE-BEM. The dynamics of the sonar transducer is modelled in three dimensions and is analyzed with external electrical excitation conditions. Different results are available such as steady-state displacement modes, underwater directivity patterns. It is shown that the present barrel-stave sonar transducer of the piezoelectric material produces flextentional displacements which could be related with higher output power, lower quality factor and more omnidirectional beam pattern than other types of sonar transducers.

  • Underwater acoustic transducers are widely used for SONAR application, whose important design parameters are shapes. materials, dimensions and supporting structures. Practical design method of transducers consists of manufacturing, experiments and modifications so that it requires much time and expenses. In this study, an analytical method was developed for the Tonpilz type transducers using the commercial finite element analysis code ATILA which can solve the electro-mechanical coupling problems. A finite element model was established including the transducer elements such as ceramic stack, head mass, tail mass, tensile bolt, and molding layers. The proposed model was verified and modified by comparing the in-air and in-water test results of prototypes. The developed analysis method will be effectively used for the sensitivity analysis of design parameters in transducer design process.

  • In this study, the underwater acoustic images were obtained by ultrasonicwave. The experiment was performed in the anechoic watertank, using a passive sonar array for one and two sound source respectively by X-Y scanning technique. The receiving array was consist of 8 disc type transducers with 1.5cm diameter at 25KHz resonance frequency. The scanned data were processed by the FORTRAN IV algorithm for the reconstruction of image, and the image had some noise due to the surface reflected waves. As the result, it was found that the acoustic imaging by electrical deflection and dynamic focusing technique is applicable to SONAR with the suppression of surface reflected wave.
