It is reported on the methodology of signal detection in noise which is based on a comparison of statistical parameters of observation sample from region of frequency-time noise space where a signal may be present and observation sample from region of this noise space and it is known a priori about the latter that the signal is absent in this region.
Tracking and exploiting instantaneous spectrum opportunities are fundamental challenges in opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) in presence of the bursty traffic of primary users and the limited spectrum sensing capability of secondary users. In order to take advantage of the history of spectrum sensing and access decisions, a sequential decision framework is widely used to design optimal policies. However, many existing schemes, based on a partially observed Markov decision process (POMDP) framework, reveal that optimal policies are non-stationary in nature which renders them difficult to calculate and implement. Therefore, this work pursues stationary OSA policies, which are thereby efficient yet low-complexity, while still incorporating many practical factors, such as spectrum sensing errors and a priori unknown statistical spectrum knowledge. First, with an approximation on channel evolution, OSA is formulated in a multi-armed bandit (MAB) framework. As a result, the optimal policy is specified by the wellknown Gittins index rule, where the channel with the largest Gittins index is always selected. Then, closed-form formulas are derived for the Gittins indices with tunable approximation, and the design of a reinforcement learning algorithm is presented for calculating the Gittins indices, depending on whether the Markovian channel parameters are available a priori or not. Finally, the superiority of the scheme is presented via extensive experiments compared to other existing schemes in terms of the quality of policies and optimality.
This article reviews the development of geophysical inverse theory. In a series of articles published in 1967, 1968, and 1979, G. Backus and F. Gilbert a trade-off between model resolution and estimation errors in geophysical inverse problems, and gave a criterion to compromise the reciprocal relation. Although the criterion was not clear in the physical point of view, it had been extensively used in the interpretation of geophysical date in the 1970s. This was the starting point of the fruitful development of inverse theory in geophysics. A reasonable criterion to compromise the reciprocal relation was derived to solve linear problems by D. D. jackson in 1979, introducing the concept of a priori information about unknown model parameters. This Jackson's approach was extended to solve nonlinear problems on the basis o probabilistic approach to the inverse problems formulated by A. Tarantola and B. Vallete in 1982. At the end of 1980s ABIC (Akaike Bayesian Information Criterion) was introduced for selecting a more reasonable model in geophysics. Now the date inversion is regarded as the process of extracting new information from observed data, combining in with a priori information about model parameters, and constructing a more clear image of model.
The semilocal convergence of a third order iterative method used for solving nonlinear operator equations in Banach spaces is established by using recurrence relations under the assumption that the second Fr´echet derivative of the involved operator satisfies the ${\omega}$-continuity condition given by $||F^{\prime\prime}(x)-F^{\prime\prime}(y)||{\leq}{\omega}(||x-y||)$, $x,y{\in}{\Omega}$, where, ${\omega}(x)$ is a nondecreasing continuous real function for x > 0, such that ${\omega}(0){\geq}0$. This condition is milder than the usual Lipschitz/H$\ddot{o}$lder continuity condition on $F^{\prime\prime}$. A family of recurrence relations based on two constants depending on the involved operator is derived. An existence-uniqueness theorem is established to show that the R-order convergence of the method is (2+$p$), where $p{\in}(0,1]$. A priori error bounds for the method are also derived. Two numerical examples are worked out to demonstrate the efficacy of our approach and comparisons are elucidated with a known result.

A four-node plate finite element for the analysis of laminated composites which is developed using strain gradient notation is presented. The element is based on a first-order shear deformation theory and on the equivalent lamina assumption. Strains and stresses can be calculated at different points through the thickness of the plate. They are averaged values due to the equivalent lamina assumption. A shear correction factor is used as the transverse shear strain is taken to be constant over the plate thickness while its actual variation is parabolic. Strain gradient notation, which is physically interpretable, allows for the detailed a-priori analysis of the finite element model. The polynomial expansions are inspected and spurious terms responsible for modeling errors are identified in the shear strains polynomial expansions. The element is corrected by simply removing the spurious terms from the shear strains expansions. The element is implemented into a FORTRAN finite element code in two versions; namely, with and without spurious terms. Results are compared to show the effects of the spurious terms on the solutions. It is also shown that a refined mesh composed of corrected elements provides solutions which approximate very well the analytical solutions, validating the procedure.

In real-time communication services, delay constraints are among the most important QoS (Quality of Service) factors. In particular, it is difficult to guarantee the delay requirement over wireless channels, since they exhibit dynamic time-varying behavior and even severe burst-errors during periods of deep fading. Channel throughput may be increased, but at the cost of the additional delays when ARQ (Automatic Repeat Request) schemes are used. For real-time communication services, it is very essential to predict data deliverability. This paper derives the delay distribution and the successful delivery probability within a given delay budget using a priori channel model and a posteriori information from the perspective of queueing theory. The Gilbert-Elliot burst-noise channel is employed as an a Priori channel model, where a two-state Markov-modulated Bernoulli process $(MMBP_2)$ is used. for a posteriori information, the channel parameters, the queue-length and the initial channel state are assumed to be given. The numerical derivation is verified and analyzed via Monte Carlo simulations. This numerical derivation is then applied to a rate control scheme for real-time video transmission, where an optimal encoding rate is determined based on the future channel capacity and the distortion of the reconstructed pictures.

The Probabilistic Traveling Salesman Problem (PTSP) is an important topic in the study of traveling salesman problem and stochastic routing problem. The goal of PTSP is to find a priori tour visiting all customers with a minimum expected length, which simply skips customers not requiring a visit in the tour. There are many existing researches for the homogeneous version of the problem, where all customers have an identical visiting probability. Otherwise, the researches for the heterogeneous version of the problem are insufficient and most of them have focused on search base algorithms. In this paper, we propose a simple construction algorithm to solve the heterogeneous PTSP. The Minimum Expected Length Insertion (MELI) algorithm is a construction algorithm and consists of processes to decide a sequence of visiting customers by inserting the one, with the minimum expected length between two customers already in the sequence. Compared with optimal solutions, the MELI algorithm generates better solutions when the average probability is low and the customers have different visiting probabilities. We also suggest a local search method which improves the initial solution generated by the MELI algorithm.
This paper analyzes the performance of various single channel speech enhancement algorithms when they are applied to automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems as a preprocessor. The functional modules of speech enhancement systems are first divided into four major modules such as a gain estimator, a noise power spectrum estimator, a priori signal to noise ratio (SNR) estimator, and a speech absence probability (SAP) estimator. We investigate the relationship between speech recognition accuracy and the roles of each module. Simulation results show that the Wiener filter outperforms other gain functions such as minimum mean square error-short time spectral amplitude (MMSE-STSA) and minimum mean square error-log spectral amplitude (MMSE-LSA) estimators when a perfect noise estimator is applied. When the performance of the noise estimator degrades, however, MMSE methods including the decision directed module to estimate a priori SNR and the SAP estimation module helps to improve the performance of the enhancement algorithm for speech recognition systems.
The deep space orbit determination software (DSODS) is a part of a flight dynamic subsystem (FDS) for the Korean Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO), a lunar exploration mission expected to launch after 2018. The DSODS consists of several sub modules, of which the orbit determination (OD) module employs a weighted least squares algorithm for estimating the parameters related to the motion and the tracking system of the spacecraft, and subroutines for performance improvement and detailed analysis of the orbit solution. In this research, DSODS is demonstrated and validated at lunar orbit at an altitude of 100 km using actual Lunar Prospector tracking data. A set of a priori states are generated, and the robustness of DSODS to the a priori error is confirmed by the NASA planetary data system (PDS) orbit solutions. Furthermore, the accuracy of the orbit solutions is determined by solution comparison and overlap analysis as about tens of meters. Through these analyses, the ability of the DSODS to provide proper orbit solutions for the KPLO are proved.
In this study, we consider a multi-input multi-output styrene polymerization reactor system for which the monomer conversion and the weight average molecular weight are controlled by manipulating the jacket inlet temperature and the feed flow rate. The reactor system is identified by using a linear subspace identification method and then the output feedback model predictive controller is constructed on the basis of the identified model. Here we use the Best Linear Unbiased Estimation (BLUE) filter as a stochastic estimator instead of the Kalman filter. The BLUE filter observes the state successfully without any a priori information of initial states. In contrast to the Kalman filter, the BLUE filter eliminates the offset by observing the state of the augmented system regardless of a priori information of the initial state for an integral white noise augmented system. A BLUE filter has a finite impulse response (FIR) structure which utilizes finite measurements and inputs on the most recent time interval [i-N, i] in order to avoid long processing times.
