  • Paleoparasitological analysis was carried on 4 Merovingian skeletons, dated from the late-5th to the late-9th centuries, and recovered in the church of Saint-Martin-au-Val in Chartres (Center region, France). The corpses were buried in stone sarcophagi, which were still sealed at the time of excavation. Parasite marker extraction was conducted on sediment samples taken from the abdominal and pelvic regions, but also on samples taken from under the head and the feet as control samples. Microscopic observation revealed the presence of 3 gastrointestinal parasites, namely the roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides), the whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) and the fish tapeworm (genus Diphyllobothrium). This analysis contributes to a better knowledge of the health status and the lifestyle of ancient medieval populations during the Merovingian period, for which very few paleoparasitological data were available, up until now. It demonstrates the presence of the fish tapeworm for the first time during this period.

  • The ectoparasite ciliate Trichodina has been recorded from above 100 species of freshwater and marine fishes. In April 2009, we investigated the trichodia infection in 13 species of marine fishes captured by emplacement net and gill net in order to understand trichodina infection status among the natural fish populations along the Namhae-Gun coast area, the southen coast of Korea. Trichodina infection was observed in 10 out of 10 sea basses Lateolabrax japonicus, 2 out of 5 finespotted flounder Pleuronichthys cornutus and 1 out of a stone flounder Kareius bicoloratus. The sea bass infected with the parasite showed hypertrophy and exfoliation in gill epithelium. In addition, hyperplasia and lamellar fusion of gill filament were noticed among naturally affected sea bass.

  • In bird species that suffer brood parasitism, the question about which sex is responsible for egg rejection has important implications for determining the coevolutionary relationship between brood parasites and their hosts. In order to determine which sex rejects a parasitic egg in vinous-throated parrotbills (Paradoxornis webbianus) which have egg color dimorphism, we conducted model egg experiments and video-recorded the behavior of the focal pair. Both sexes showed rejection behavior to the parasitic eggs. It indicates that the vinous-throated parrotbill may have a high rejection rate and faster spread of any rejection alleles through out populations. However, further studies are still needed to confirm the egg recognition mechanism in this species, which will expand our knowledge of the evolutionary relationship between host and parasite.

  • Paleoparasitology is a discipline that applies existing conventional and molecular techniques to study parasites found in ancient ruins. This review focuses on the history of the discovery of parasites (mostly helminth eggs and larvae) in archaeological soil samples and mummies in Korea from the Three Kingdoms Period to the Joseon Dynasty (100 BCE-1910 CE). We also briefly review important milestones in global paleoparasitology. The helminth species reported so far in Korea included Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, Strongyloides stercoralis (larva), Trichostrongylus sp. (larva), Paracapillaria philippinensis (syn. Capillaria philippinensis), Enterobius vermicularis, Fasciola hepatica, dicrocoeliids, Paragonimus westermani, Clonorchis sinensis, Metagonimus yokogawai, Pygidiopsis summa, Gymnophalloides seoi, Isthmiophora hortensis, Dibothriocephalus nihonkaiensis (syn. Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense), and Taenia spp. tapeworms. The findings obtained by Korean paleoparasitologists/archaeologists have brought about deep insight into the status of helminthic infections in Korea's past populations. Continued paleoparasitological research is essential for further understanding of ancient parasites and parasitic diseases in Korea.

  • The aim of this parasitological study is examining contemporary (the late 20th century) specimens of the arctic or subarctic areas in Western Siberia and comparing them with the information acquired from archaeological samples from the same area. In the contemporary specimens, we observed the parasite eggs of 3 different species: Opisthochis felineus, Ascaris lumbricoides, and Enterobius vermicularis. Meanwhile, in archaeoparasitological results of Vesakoyakha, Kikki-Akki, and Nyamboyto I burial grounds, the eggs of Diphyllobothrium and Taenia spp. were found while no nematode (soil-transmitted) eggs were observed in the same samples. In this study, we concluded helminth infection pattern among the arctic and subarctic peoples of Western Siberia throughout history as follows: the raw fish-eating tradition did not undergo radical change in the area at least since the 18th century; and A. lumbricoides or E. vermicularis did not infect the inhabitants of this area before 20th century. With respect to the Western Siberia, we caught glimpse of the parasite infection pattern prevalent therein via investigations on contemporary and archaeoparasitological specimens.

  • In general, Evoluationary Algorithm(EAs) are refered to as methods of population-based optimization. And EAs are considered as very efficient methods of optimal sytem design because they can provice much opportunity for obtaining the global optimal solution. This paper presents a co-evolution scheme of artifical neural networks, which has two different, still cooperatively working, populations, called as a host popuation and a parasite population, respectively. Using the conventional generatic algorithm the host population is evolved in the given environment, and the parastie population composed of schemata is evolved to find useful schema for the host population. the structure of artificial neural network is a diagonal recurrent neural netork which has self-feedback loops only in its hidden nodes. To find optimal neural networks we should take into account the structure of the neural network as well as the adaptive parameters, weight of neurons. So we use the genetic algorithm that searches the structure of the neural network by the co-evolution mechanism, and for the weights learning we adopted the evolutionary stategies. As a results of co-evolution we will find the optimal structure of the neural network in a short time with a small population. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method are inspected by applying it to the stabilization and position control of the invered-pendulum system. And we will show that the result of co-evolution is better than that of the conventioal genetic algorithm.

  • Kudoa septempunctata, a myxozoan parasite, usually presents without any signs and primarily infects adult fish. The invasive diagnostic methods, such as tissue biopsy, can identify pathogens, but cause economic losses because they require killing the fish. In this study, we conducted a monitoring of four fish farms located on Jeju Island, to investigate the potential for non-invasive diagnosis of K. septempunctata using hyperspectral cameras. It provides spectral information from R000_B000_G000 to R255_B255_G255 for a total of 3,282 olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Each object is imaged with 2,000 data points, allowing comprehensive spectral analysis by comparing images obtained from negative control objects to positive control objects. Noticeable differences were observed in the brightness or pallor of the positive control images. This suggests the potential utility of hyperspectral imaging as a non-invasive diagnostic tool for detecting K. septempunctata infections in fish populations.

  • Rats were immunized through an initial infection with 1,000 filariform larvae (L3) of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and after complete expulsion of worms they were challenged with 1,000 L3 of Strongyloides venezuelensis to investigate whether cross-resistance developed against a heterologous parasite. Nippostrongylus brasiliensis immunized rats developed a partial cross-resistance against S.venezuelensis migrating larvae (MSL3) in the lungs and adult worms in the small intestine. The population of MSL3 in the lungs were significantly lower (p<0.05) in immunized rats($22.0{\;}{\pm}{\;}7.4$) compared with controls ($105.0{\;}{\pm}{\;}27.6$). The populations of adult worms, egg output and fecundity were initially decreased but from day 14 post-challenge they did not show any significant difference between immunized and control rats. However, the length of worm in immunized rat was revealed as retardation. Peripheral blood eosinophilia was significantly decreased (P<0.05) on day 7 post-challenge and then gradually increased which peaked on da 42 post-challenge when most of the worms were expelled. these results suggest that peripheral blood eosinophilia is strongly involved in the worm establishment and expulsion mechanisms.
