Recognition of Car License Plates Using Difference Operator and ART2 Algorithm (차 연산과 ART2 알고리즘을 이용한 차량 번호판 통합 인식)

  • In this paper, we proposed a new recognition method can be used in application systems using morphological features, difference operators and ART2 algorithm. At first, edges are extracted from an acquired car image by a camera using difference operators and the image of extracted edges is binarized by a block binarization method. In order to extract license plate area, noise areas are eliminated by applying morphological features of new and existing types of license plate to the 8-directional edge tracking algorithm in the binarized image. After the extraction of license plate area, mean binarization and mini-max binarization methods are applied to the extracted license plate area in order to eliminated noises by morphological features of individual elements in the license plate area, and then each character is extracted and combined by Labeling algorithm. The extracted and combined characters(letter and number symbols) are recognized after the learning by ART2 algorithm. In order to evaluate the extraction and recognition performances of the proposed method, 200 vehicle license plate images (100 for green type and 100 for white type) are used for experiment, and the experimental results show the proposed method is effective.

An Effective Method of Product Number Detection from Thick Plates (효과적인 후판의 제품번호 검출 방법)

  • In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed for detecting the product number of each thick plate and extracting each character of the product number from a image which contains several thick plates. In general, a image of thick plates contains several steal plates. To obtain the product number from the image, we first need to separate each plate. To do so, we use the line edges of thick plates and a clustering algorithm. After separating each plate, background parts are eliminated from the image of each plate. Background parts of an individual thick plate image consist of the dark part of steel and the white part of paint which is used for printing the product number. We propose a two-tiered method where dark background parts are first eliminated and then white parts are eliminated. Finally, each character is extracted from the product number image using the characteristics of product number. The results of the experiments on the various steal plates images emphasize that the proposed algorithm detects each thick plate and extracts the product number from a image effectively.

Character Recognition of Vehicle Number Plate using Modular Neural Network (모듈라 신경망을 이용한 자동차 번호판 문자인식)

  • Recently, the modular learning are very popular and receive much attention for pattern classification. The modular learning method based on the "divide and conquer" strategy can not only solve the complex problems, but also reach a better result than a single classifier′s on the learning quality and speed. In the neural network area, some researches that take the modular learning approach also have been made to improve classification performance. In this paper, we propose a simple modular neural network for characters recognition of vehicle number plate and evaluate its performance on the clustering methods of feature vectors used in constructing subnetworks. We implement two clustering method, one is grouping similar feature vectors by K-means clustering algorithm, the other grouping unsimilar feature vectors by our proposed algorithm. The experiment result shows that our algorithm achieves much better performance.

Vehicle Recognition with Recognition of Vehicle Identification Mark and License Plate (차량 식별마크와 번호판 인식을 통한 차량인식)

  • In this paper, we propose a vehicle recognition system based on the classification of vehicle identification mark and recognition of vehicle license plate. In the proposed algorithm, From the input vehicle image, we first simulate preprocessing procedures such as noise reduction, thinning etc., and detect vehicle identification mark and license plate region using the frequency distribution of intensity variation. And then, we classify extracted vehicle candidate region into identification mark, character and number of vehicle by using structural feature informations of vehicle. Lastly, we recognize vehicle informations with recognition of identification mark, character and number of vehicle using hybrid and vertical/horizontal pattern vector method. In the proposed algorithm, we used three properties of vehicle informations such as Independency property, discriminance property and frequency distribution of intensity variation property. In the vehicle images, identification mark is generally independent of the types of vehicle and vehicle identification mark. And also, the license plate region between character and background as well as horizontal/vertical intensity variations are more noticeable than other regions. To show the efficiency of the propofed algorithm, we tested it on 350 vehicle images and found that the propofed method shows good Performance regardless of irregular environment conditions as well as noise, size, and location of vehicles.

A Binarization Technique using Histogram Matching for License Plate with a Shadow (그림자가 있는 자동차 번호판을 위한 히스토그램 매칭 기반의 이진화)

  • This paper deals with a binarization for plate number recognition. The binarization process converts an image into a binary image and plays an important role for automatically recognizing plate number. The rear license plate has often a shadowed image which causes erroneous binarized image due to non-uniform illumination. In this paper, a binarization method is proposed in which the shadow line is detected in a rear plate with a shadow. And then the histogram matching is conducted for the two image separated by the shadow line. After histogram matching, two images are joined and finally Otsu method is applied for the binarization. In the experiment, the proposed algorithm shows robust performance compared to the conventional method in the presence of estimation error in the shadow line.

Isolating vehicle license plate area using the known information (사전정보를 이용한 차량번호판 영역의 분리)

  • Two different methods to extract the license plate area of a vehicle have been used for automatic recognition purposes. One method is with a color vision system and the other is with an edge detecting operator. The system with color vision has some problems if the colors of license plate and vehicle's body are similar. The various plate colors in Korea also drops the system performance. The edge detecting operator also has a problem for a real time processing since it performs on all pixels of the scene. In this paper a possible method using gray level vision system and available pre-known information of license plates is suggested. The suggested procedure searches the lower boundary of the plate by counting high contrast points between one and near pixel from the bottom line of the scene. It finds the upper boundary from the bottom line by adding number plate height after finding the lower boundary. The left and right boundaries are found by similar processes.

  • The number of vehicles are rapidly increased as our society is developed. The vehicle recognition has been studied for a while because many people acknowledged it has critical functions to solve the problems of traffic control or vehicle-related crimes. In this paper a novel method is proposed to recognize vehicle models corresponding makers. Vehicles' models are recognized based on the texture parameters from segmented radiator region above a number plate. A three-layer neural network was built and trained with the texture features for recognition. The proposed method shows $93.7\%$ of recognition rate and $99.7\%$ of specificity for vehicles' model.

An Extraction Method of Number Plates for Various Vehicles Using Digital Signal Analysis Processing Techniques (디지털 신호 분석 기법을 이용한 다양한 번호판 추출 방법)

  • Detection of a number plate consists of three stages; division of a number plate, extraction of each character from the plate, recognition of the characters. Among of these three states, division stage of a number plate is the most important part and also the most time-consuming state. This paper suggests an effective region extraction method of a number plate for various images obtained from unmanned inspection systems of illegal parking violation, especially when we have to consider the diverse surrounding environments of roads. Our approaching method detects each region by investigating the characteristics in changes of brightness and intensity between the background part and character part, and the characteristics on character parts such as the sizes, heights, widths, and distance in between two characters. The method also divides a number plate into different types of the plate. This research can solve the number plate region detection failure problems caused by plate edge damages not only for Korean domestic number plates but also for new European style number plates. The method also reduces the time consumption by processing the detection in real-time, therefore, it can be used as a practical solution.

A Study on Vehicle License Plates and Character Sorting Algorithms in YOLOv5 (YOLOv5에서 자동차 번호판 및 문자 정렬 알고리즘에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we propose a sorting method for extracting accurate license plate information, which is currently used in Korea, after detecting objects using YOLO. We propose sorting methods for the five types of vehicle license plates managed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport by classifying the plates with the number of lines, Korean characters, and numbers. The results of experiments with 5 license plates show that the proposed algorithm identifies all license plate types and information by focusing on the object with high reliability score in the result label file presented by YOLO and deleting unnecessary object information. The proposed method will be applicable to all systems that recognize license plates.

  • This paper describes the method of efficient container number recognition in colored container image with number plate at ATC(Automatic Transfer Crane) in container terminal yard. At the Sinseondae terminal gate in Busan, the container number recognition system is installed by "intelligent port-logistics system technology development", that is government research and development project. It is the method that it sets up the tunnel structure inside camera on the gate and it recognizes the container number in order to recognize the export container cargo automatically. However, as the automation equipment is introduced to the container terminal and the unmanned of a task is gradually accomplished, the container number recognition system for the confirmation of the object of work is required at ATC in container terminal yard. Therefore, the container number recognition system fitted for it is necessary for ATC in container terminal yard in which there are many intrusive of the character recognition through image including a sunlight, rain, snow, shadow, and etc. unlike the gate. In this paper, hardware components of the camera, illumination, and sensor lamp were altered and software elements of an algorithm were changed. that is, the difference of the brightness of the surrounding environment, and etc. were regulated for recognize a container number. Through this, a shadow problem, and etc. that it is thickly below hung with the sunlight or the cargo equipment were solved and the recognition time was shortened and the recognition rate was raised.
