A real-time hybrid method, in which the experimental implementation and the numerical computation of a structure are simultaneously carried out in real-time and combined on-line, has been used as a dynamic testing technique of structure to investigate its dynamic behaviors. In this paper, an experimental hybrid method, which implements the earthquake response control of a building structure with a TLD by using only a TLD as an experimental part, is proposed and is experimentally verified through a shaking table test. In the proposed methodology, the whole building structure with a TLD is divided into the upper TLD and the lower structural parts as experimental and numerical substructures, respectively. At the moment, the control force acting between their interface is measured from the experimental TLD with shear-type load-cell which is mounted on shaking table. Shaking table vibrates the upper experimental TLD with the response calculated from the numerical substructure, which is subjected to the excitations of the measured interface control force at its top story and an earthquake input at its base. The experimental results show that the conventional method, in which both a TLD and a building model are physically manufactured and are tested, can be replaced by the proposed methodology with a simple experimental installation and a good accuracy for evaluating the control performance of a TLD.
This paper presents a method of actively controlling the interior noise by a trim panel with hybrid feedforward-feedback control loop. The control technique is designed to minimize the vibration of panel whose motion is limited to that of a piston (out-of-plane motion). The hybrid controller consists of an adaptive feedforward controller in conjunction with a linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) feedback controller. In order to maintain control performance of both persistent and transient disturbances, the feedback loop speeds up the adaptation rate of feedforward controller by improving damping capacity of secondary plant related with the adaptation rule. Numerical simulation and experimental result indicate that the hybrid controller is a more effective method for reducing the vibration of the panel (and therefore the interior noise) compared to using feedforward controller.
As many systems depend on electronics, concern for fault tolerance is growing rapidly in the safety critical system such as intelligent vehicle. In order to make system fault tolerant, there has been a body of research mainly from aerospace field including predictive hybrid redundancy by Lee. Although the predictive hybrid redundancy has the fault tolerant mechanism to satisfy the fault tolerant requirement of safety crucial system such as x-by-wire system, it suffers form the variability of prediction performance according to the input feature of system. As an alternative to the prediction method of predictive hybrid redundancy for robust fault tolerant, Kalman prediction has attracted some attention because of its well-known and often-used with its structure called Kalman hybrid redundancy. In addition, several numerical simulation results are given where the Kalman hybrid redundancy outperforms with predictive smoothing voter.
A novel Fission Diffusion Synthetic Acceleration (FDSA) method is developed and implemented as a part of a hybrid neutronics method for source convergence acceleration and variance reduction in Monte Carlo (MC) criticality calculations. The acceleration of the MC calculation stems from constructing a synthetic operator and solving a low-order problem using information obtained from previous MC calculations. By applying the P1 approximation, two correction terms, one for the scalar flux and the other for the current, can be solved in the low-order problem and applied to the transport solution. A variety of one-dimensional (1-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) numerical tests are constructed to demonstrate the performance of FDSA in comparison with the standalone MC method and the coupled MC and Coarse Mesh Finite Difference (MC-CMFD) method on both intended purposes. The comparison results show that the acceleration by a factor of 3-10 can be expected for source convergence and the reduction in MC variance is comparable to CMFD in both slab and full core geometries, although the effectiveness of such hybrid methods is limited to systems with small dominance ratios.
A code is developed to simulate a viscous flow field around a deformable body using the hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method. In this method, the immersed boundary(IB) nodes are defined near the body boundary then velocities at the IB nodes are reconstructed based on the interpolation along the normal direction to the body surface. A new method is suggested to define the IB nodes so that a closed fluid domain is guaranteed by a set of IB nodes and the method is applicable to a zero-thickness body such as a sail. To validate the developed code, the vorticity fields are compared with other recent calculations where a cylinder orbits and moves into its own wake. It is shown the code can handle a sharp trailing edge at Reynolds number of $10^5$ under moderate requirements on girds. Finally the developed code is applied to simulate the vortex shedding behind a deforming foil with flapping tail like a fish. It is shown that the acceleration of fluids near the flapping tail contributes to the generation of the thrust for propulsion.

The exhaust gas emission from marine diesel engines is one of the major environmental issues. The authors focus the use of photovoltaic energy for the electric power system on marine ships. This paper proposes an operation method of a photovoltaic/diesel hybrid generating system for a small ship in consideration of the fluctuating photovoltaic power due to solar radiation. The aim of the proposed operation method is to minimize the fuel consumption and storage capacity of the battery. The validity of the proposed control method is shown by the numerical simulation based on the experimental data of the photovoltaic system.
This paper presents the effect of injection pressure on the atomization characteristics of high-pressure injector in a direct injection gasoline engine both experimentally and numerically. The atomization characteristics such as mean droplet size, mean velocity, and velocity distribution were measured by phase Doppler particle analyzer. The spray development, spray penetration, and global spray structure were visualized using a laser sheet method. In order to investigate the atomization process in more detail, the calculations with the LISA-DDB hybrid model were performed. The results provide the effect of injection pressure on the macroscopic and microscopic behaviors such as spray development, spray penetration, mean droplet size, and mean velocity distribution. It is revealed that the accuracy of prediction is promoted by using the LISA-DDB hybrid breakup model, comparing to the original LISA model or TAB model alone. And the characteristics of the primary and secondary breakups have been investigated by numerical approach.
This paper presents experimental and numerical investigations of a new seismic enhancement method for existing reinforced concrete (RC) frames by using an external sub-structure, the hybrid seismic retrofit method (HSRM) system. This retrofit system is an H-shaped frame bolt-connected to an existing RC frame with an infilled-concrete layer between their gaps. Two RC frames were built, one with and one without HSRM, and tested under cyclic loading. The experimental findings showed that the retrofitted RC frame was superior to the non-retrofitted specimen in terms of initial stiffness, peak load, and energy dissipation capacity. A numerical simulation using a commercial program was employed for verification with the experiments. The results obtained from the simulations were consistent with those from the experiments, indicating the finite element (FE) models can simulate the seismic behaviors of bare RC frame and retrofitted RC frame using HSRM.
This paper proposes a data-driven methodology for online early damage identification under changing environmental conditions. The proposed method relies on two data analysis methods: feature-based method and hybrid principal component analysis (PCA) and kernel PCA to separate damage from environmental influences. First, spectral sub-band features, namely, spectral sub-band centroids (SSCs) and log spectral sub-band energies (LSSEs), are proposed as damage-sensitive features to extract damage information from measured structural responses. Second, hybrid modeling by integrating PCA and kernel PCA is performed on the spectral sub-band feature matrix for data normalization to extract both linear and nonlinear features for nonlinear procedure monitoring. After feature normalization, suppressing environmental effects, the control charts (Hotelling T2 and SPE statistics) is implemented to novelty detection and distinguish damage in structures. The hybrid PCA-KPCA technique is compared to KPCA by applying support vector machine (SVM) to evaluate the effectiveness of its performance in detecting damage. The proposed method is verified through numerical and full-scale studies (a Bridge Health Monitoring (BHM) Benchmark Problem and a cable-stayed bridge in China). The results demonstrate that the proposed method can detect the structural damage accurately and reduce false alarms by suppressing the effects and interference of environmental variations.
