This report presents the results of an investigation on the early strength development of pastes high volume slag cement (HVSC) activated with different concentration of sodium carbonate ($Na_2CO_3$). The ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was replaced by ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) from 50% to 90% by mass, the dry powders were blended before the paste mixing. The $Na_2CO_3$ was added at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10% by total binder (OPC+GGBFS) weight. A constant water-to-binder ratio (w/b)=0.45 was used for all mixtures. The research carried out the compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), water absorption and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis at early ages(1 and 3 days). The incase of mixtures, V5 (50% OPC + 50% GGBFS), V6 (40% OPC + 60% GGBFS) and V7 (30% OPC + 70% GGBFS) specimens with 6% $Na_2CO_3$, V8 (20% OPC + 80% GGBFS) and V9 (10% OPC + 90% GGBFS) specimens with 10% $Na_2CO_3$ showed the maximum strength development. The results of UPV and water absorption showed a similar tendency to the strength properties. The XRD analysis of specimens indicated that the hydration products formed in samples were CSH and calcite phases.

This paper presents the experimental results of frost durability characteristics including freezing-thawing and de-icing salt scaling of the concrete for gutter of the road and marine structure. Mixtures were proportioned with the three level of water-binder ratio(W/B) and three binder compositions corresponding to Type I cement with 0%, 30% and 50% GGBS(Ground granulated blast furnace slag) replacement. Also, two different solutions of calcium chloride were used to evaluate their effect on the frost durability resistance. Specially, in case of complex of freezing and thawing with salt and carbonation, the deterioration of concrete surface is evaluated. Test results showed that the BFS30 and BFS50 mixture exhibited higher durability and lower mass loss values than those made with OPC mix and the use of GGBS can be used effectively in terms of economy and frost durability of the concrete to be in complex deterioration. Therefore, the resistance to complex deterioration with freezing-thawing was strongly influenced by the strength and the type of cement.

It can be observed that steep slopes ($65^{\circ}$ to $80^{\circ}$) consist of rock masses were kept stable for a long time. In rock-mass slopes with similar ground condition, steeper slopes than 1 : 0.5 ($63^{\circ}$) may be applied if the discontinuities of rock-mass slope are distributed in a direction favorable to the stability of the slope. In making a decision the angle of the slope, if the preliminary rock mass conditions applicable to steep slope are quantitatively setup, they may be used as guidance in design practice. In this study, the above rock mass was defined as a good continuum rock mass and the quantitative setup criterion range was proposed using RMR, SMR and GSI classifications for the purpose of providing engineering standard for good continuum rock mass conditions. The methods of study are as follows. The stable slope at steep slopes ($65^{\circ}$ to $80^{\circ}$) for each rock type was selected as the study area, and RMR, SMR and GSI were classified to reflect the face mapping results. The results were reviewed by applying the calculated shear strength to the stable analysis of the current state of rock mass slope using the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. It is intended to verify the validity of the preliminary criterion as a rock mass condition that remains stable on a steep slope. Based on the analysis and review by the above research method, it was analyzed that a good continuum rock mass slope can be set to Basic RMR ${\geq}50$ (45 in sedimentary rock), GSI and SMR ${\geq}45$. The safety factor of the LEM is between Fs = 14.08 and 67.50 (average 32.9), and the displacement of the FEM is 0.13 to 0.64 mm (average 0.27 mm). This can be seen as a result of quantitative representation and verification of the stability of a good continuum rock mass slope that has been maintained stable for a long period of time with steep slopes ($65^{\circ}$ to $80^{\circ}$). The setup guideline for a good continuum rock mass slope will be able to establish a more detailed setup standard when the data are accumulated, and it is also a further study project. If stable even on steep slopes of 1 : 0.1 to 0.3, the upper limit of steep slopes is 1 : 0.3 with reference to the overseas design standards and report, thus giving the benefit of ensuring economic and eco-friendlyness. Also, the development of excavation technology and plantation technology and various eco-friendly slope design techniques will help overcome psychological anxiety and rapid weathering and relaxation due to steep slope construction.

Underground excavation using TBM machines has been increasing to reduce complaints caused by noise, vibration, and traffic congestion resulted from the urban underground construction in Korea. However, TBM excavation design and construction still need improvement because those are based on standards of the technologically advanced countries (e.g., Japan, Germany) that do not consider geological environment in Korea at all. Above all, although TBM performance is a main factor determining the TBM machine type, duration and cost of the construction, it is estimated by only using UCS (uniaxial compressive strength) as the ground parameters and it often does not match the actual field conditions. This study was carried out as part of efforts to predict penetration rate suitable for Korean ground conditions. The effective parameters were defined through the correlation analysis between the penetration rate and the geotechnical parameters or TBM performance parameters. The effective parameters were then used as variables of the multiple regression analysis to derive a regression model for predicting TBM penetration rate. As a result, the regression model was estimated by UCS and joint spacing and showed a good agreement with field penetration rate measured during TBM excavation. However, when this model was applied to another site in Korea, the prediction accuracy was slightly reduced. Therefore, in order to overcome the limitation of the regression model, further studies are required to obtain a generalized prediction model which is not restricted by the field conditions.
This paper investigates the effect of rock discontinuities on a shear stress wave that is induced by earthquake or blasting and provides the result of numerical parametric studies. The numerical tests of different conditions of rock and discontinuity have been carried out after confirming that the numerical approach is valid throughout a verification analysis from which the test results were compared with a theoretical solution. In-situ stress condition was considered as a rock condition and internal friction angle and cohesive value, which are the shear strength parameters, were considered as discontinuities condition. The joint inclination angle was also taken into account as a parameter. With the various conditions of different parameters, the test results showed that a shear stress wave propagating through a mass is highly influenced by the shear strength of discontinuities and the condition of joint inclination angle as well as in-situ stress. The study results indicate that when earthquake or blasting-induced dynamic loading propagates through a jointed rock mass or a stratified soil ground the effect of in-situ stress and discontinuities including a stratum boundary should be taken into account when evaluating the dynamic effect on nearby facilities and structures.

Pressure grouting is a common technique in geotechnical engineering to increase the stiffness and strength of the ground mass and to fill boreholes or void space in a tunnel lining and so on. Recently, the pressure grouting has been applied to a soil-nailing system which is widely used to improve slope stability. The soil-nailing design has been empirically performed in most geotechnical applications because the interaction between pressurized grouting paste and the adjacent ground mass is complicated and difficult to analyze. The purpose of this study is to analyze the increase of pullout resistance induced by pressurized grouting with the aid of performing laboratory model tests and field tests. In this paper, two main causes of pullout resistance increases induced by pressurized grouting were verified: the increase of mean normal stress and the increase of coefficient of pullout friction. From laboratory tests, it was found that dilatancy angle could be estimated by modified cavity expansion theory using the measured wall displacements. The radial displacement increases with dilatancy angle decrease and the dilatancy angle increases with injection pressure increase. The measured pullout resistance obtained from field tests is in good agreement with the estimated one from the modified cavity expansion theory.

Portland cement production is under critical review due to high amount of $CO_2$ gas released to the atmosphere. Attempts to increase the utilization of a by-products such as fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag to partially replace the cement in concrete are gathering momentum. But most of by-products is currently dumped in landfills, thus creating a threat to the environment. Many researches on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. In this study, we investigated the influence of alkali activator and superplasticizer on the flowability and compressive strength of the alkali-activated mortar in oder to develop cementless alkali-activated concrete using blast furnace slag. In view of the results, we found out that the type and mixture ratio of alkali activator, the type and adding order of superplasticizer results to be significant factors. When cementless alkali-activated mortar using blast furnace slag manufactured with 1:1 the mass ratio of 9M NaOH and sodium silicate, and added superplasticizer before alkali activator in the mixer, we can be secured workability with 180 mm of flow during 1 hours and compressive strength of about 50 MPa under $20^{\circ}C$ curing condition at age of 28days.

Many researches on alternative materials as construction materials is continuing by recycling industrial byproducts due to shortage of sitereclamation and natural aggregates. In this paper, engineering properties in early-aged OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) and GGBFS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) concrete are evaluated with EOS aggregate replacement. The related experiments were carried out with 0.6 of water to binder ratio, three levels of EOS replacement ratios (0%, 30% and 50%) for fine aggregate, and two levels of cement replacement with GGBFS (0% and 40%). Several tests such as slump air content, and unit mass measurement are performed for fresh concrete, and compressive strength and diffusion coefficient referred to NT BUILD 492 method are measured for hardened concrete. Through the tests, it was evaluated that the compressive strength in concrete with EOS aggregate increased to 3 days and 7 days but slightly decreased at the age of 28 days. In the accelerated chloride penetration test, GGBFS concrete showed reduced diffusion coefficients by 60 - 67% compared with OPC concrete. The lowest chloride diffusion coefficient was evaluated in the 50% replacement with EOS aggregate, which showed an applicability of EOS aggregate to concrete production.

This study aims to develop CLSM fill material for emergency restoration using landfill coal ash. As a result of examining physical properties such as particle size distribution and fines content of landfill coal ash, bottom ash, fly ash, and general soil were mixed, and SP was found to have a density of 2.03 and a residual particle pass rate of 7.8 %. CLSM materials that secure fluidity in unit quantities without using chemical admixtures such as glidants and water reducing agents have a high risk of material separation due to bleeding. As a result of this experiment, it was found that the bleeding ratio did not satisfy the standard in the case of the specimen with a large amount of fly ash and a lot of addition of mixing water. As a result of the compressive strength test, the strength development of 0.5 MPa or more for 4 hours was found to be satisfactory for the specimens using hemihydrate gypsum with a unit binder amount of 200 or more, and the remaining gypsum showed poor strength development. Although it is judged that landfill coal ash can be used as a CLSM material, it is necessary to identify and apply the physical and chemical characteristics of coal ash buried in the ash treatment plant of each power generation company.
A comparison study is made between the dynamic properties of an argillaceous siltstone and its grouting-reinforced body. The purpose is to investigate how grout injection can help repair broken soft rocks. A slightly weathered argillaceous siltstone is selected, and part of the siltstone is mechanically crushed and cemented with Portland cement to simulate the grouting-reinforced body. Core specimens with the size of $50mm{\times}38mm$ are prepared from the original rock and the grouting-reinforced body. Impact tests on these samples are then carried out using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) apparatus. Failure patterns are analyzed and geotechnical parameters of the specimens are estimated. Based on the experimental results, for the grouting-reinforced body, its shock resistance is poorer than that of the original rock, and most cracks happen in the cementation boundaries between the cement mortar and the original rock particles. It was observed that the grouting-reinforced body ends up with more fragmented residues, most of them have larger fractal dimensions, and its dynamic strength is generally lower. The mass ratio of broken rocks to cement has a significant effect on its dynamic properties and there is an optimal ratio that the maximum dynamic peak strength can be achieved. The dynamic strain-softening behavior of the grouting-reinforced body is more significant compared with that of the original rock. Both the time dependent damage model and the modified overstress damage model are equally applicable to the original rock, but the former performs much better compared with the latter for the grouting-reinforced body. In addition, it was also shown that water content and impact velocity both have significant effect on dynamic properties of the original rock and its grouting-reinforced body. Higher water content leads to more small broken rock pieces, larger fractal dimensions, lower dynamic peak strength and smaller elastic modulus. However, the water content plays a minor role in fractal dimensions when the impact velocity is beyond a certain value. Higher impact loading rate leads to higher degree of fragmentation and larger fractal dimensions both in argillaceous siltstone and its grouting-reinforced body. These results provide a sound basis for the quantitative evaluation on how cement grouting can contribute to the repair of broken soft rocks.
