  • It is investigated that the determination of the correlation between the change of microstructure and electrical properties. Yttria is added to the compositiojn of rhombohedral region in Pb(Mg1/3Nb2./3)O3-PbTiO3-PbZrO3 ternary system. Average grian size, lattice parameters and distribution of yttrium are characterized by XRD, SEM and EDS. Electrical properties are determined by measurement of Curie temperature, piezoelectric properties and hysteresis loops. The results are as follows; 1. Both lattice parameters, a and ${\alpha}$, are changed by addition of yttria to the composition of rhomboheadral region in Pb(Mg1/3Nb2./3)O3-PbTiO3-PbZrO3 ternary system and Curie temperature is proportional to the values at (90-${\alpha}$).

  • The effects of Niobium on the structure and properties(especially electric properties) of passive film of Zirconium alloys in pH 8.5 buffer solution are examined by the photo-electrochemical analysis. For Zr-xNb alloys (x = 0, 0.45, 1.5, 2.5 wt%), photocurrent began to increase at the incident energy of 3.5 ~ 3.7 eV and exhibited the $1^{st}$ peak at 4.3 eV and the $2^{nd}$ peak at 5.7 eV. From $(i_{ph}hv)^{1/2}$ vs. hv plot, indirect band gap energies $E_g{^1}$= 3.01~3.47 eV, $E_g{^2}$= 4.44~4.91 eV were obtained. With increasing Nb content, the relative photocurrent intensity of $1^{st}$ peak significantly increased. Compared with photocurrent spectrum of thermal oxide of Zr-2.5Nb, It was revealed that $1^{st}$ peak in photocurrent spectrum for the passive film formed on Zr-Nb alloy was generated by two types of electron transitions; the one caused by hydrous $ZrO_2$ and the other created by Nb. Two electron transition sources were overlapped over the same range of incident photon energy. In the photocurrent spectrum for passive film formed on Zr-2.5Nb alloy in which Nb is dissolved into matrix by quenching, the relative photocurrent intensity of $1^{st}$ peak increased, which implies that dissolved Nb act as another electron transition source.

  • The out-of-pile mechanical performance and microstructure of recrystallized Zr-1.5 Nb-S alloy was investigated. The strength of the recrystallized Zr-1.5Nb-O-S alloys was observed to increase with the addition of sulfur over a wide temperature range, from room temperature up to $300^{\circ}C$. A yield drop and stress serrations due to dynamic strain were observed at room temperature and $300^{\circ}C$. Wavy and curved dislocations and loosely knit tangles were observed after strained to 0.07 at room temperature, suggesting that cross slip is easier. At $300^{\circ}C$, however, dislocations were observed to be straight and aligned along the slip plane, suggesting that cross slip is rather difficult. At $300^{\circ}C$, oxygen atoms are likely to exert a drag force on moving dislocations, intensifying the dynamic strain aging effect. Oxygen atoms segregated at partial dislocations of a screw dislocation with the edge component may hinder the cross slip, resulting in the rather straight dislocations distributed on the major slip planes. Recrystallized Zr-Nb-S alloys exhibited ductile fracture surfaces, supporting the beneficial effect of sulfur in zirconium alloys. Oxidation resistance in air was also found to be improved with the addition of sulfur in Zr-1.5 Nb-O alloys.

  • High voltage paper-electrophoresis of fission products from 24 hour neutron-irradiated and 150 days-decayed 90% highly enriched uranyl nitrate solution has been carried out by using the specially designed migration apparatus. The separation of Zr-95 and Nb-95 from the other fission products is possible under the migration condition of 0.1 $M-HClO_4$ (pH=0.85), 0.05 M-HCl+0.09M-KCl (pH=0.9), 0.1M-HCl (pH=1.1) and 0.01 M-HCl (pH=2.0). Zr-95 and Nb-95 are separated out at+1cm from the fiducial point. The separation of Zr-95 and Nb-95 from each other is possible under the migration condition of 0.1 $M-HClO_4$, 0.05 M-HCl+0.09 M-KCl, 0.1 M-HCl and 0.1 M-HAc+0.1 M-NaAc (pH=4.68) together with 2% ammonium oxalate. Nb-95 is separated out at $-6{\sim}-7cm$ from the fiducial point and Zr-95 at $+1{\sim}-lcm$. The separation of Ru-103 from the other fission products is possible under the migration condition of 0.025 $M-Na_2CO_3+0.025\;M-NaHCO_3$ (pH=10.0), 0.01M-$Na_3PO_4$ (pH=11.7) and 0.1 M-NaOH (pH=13.2). Ru-103 migrates towards the anode -6cm, -4cm and -3cm, respectively.

  • Commercially pure titanium(cp-Ti) and Ti-15wt%Zr-4wt%Nb-4wt%Ta alloy were melted in vacuum induction furnace. According to the chemical analysis, the content of carbon was above ASTM standard in the cast ingots because of using graphite crucible. The TEM micostructures of cp-Ti and Ti alloy shows that chemically stable TiC precipitates distribute in ${\alpha}-Ti$ matrix. In order to examine the properties of cp-Ti and Ti-Zr-Nb-Ta alloy for dental applications, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance were investigated. The anodic polarization properties of Ti-Zr-Nb-Zr alloy were almost same as that of cp-Ti in 1% lactic acid. However, as the results of the anodic polarization test in 5% HCl, it was known that Ti-Zr-Nb-Zr alloy showed a rapid decrease in current density at higher potential in comparison with cp-Ti. The yield stress and tensile strengh in Ti-Zr-Nb-Ta were ${\sigma}_{0.2}=623\;MPa$, ${\sigma}_{T.S.}=708\;MPa$ and these results showed 30% increase in yield stress in comparison with cp-Ti.

  • The effect of oxygen on the shape memory characteristics in Ti-18Nb-6Zr-XO (X = 0-1.5 at%) biomedical alloys was investigated by tensile tests. The alloys were fabricated by an arc melting method at Ar atmosphere. The ingots were cold-rolled to 0.45 mm with a reduction up to 95% in thickness. After severe cold-rolling, the plate was solution-treated at 1173 K for 1.8 ks. The fracture stress of the solution-treated specimens increased from 450 Mpa to 880 MPa with an increasing oxygen content up to 1.5%. The fracture stress increased by 287MPa with 1 at% increase of oxygen content. The critical stress for slip increased from 430 MPa to 695 MPa with an increasing oxygen content up to 1.5 at%. The maximum recovery strain of 4.1% was obtained in the Ti-18Nb-6Zr-0.5O (at%) alloy. The martensitic transformation temperature decreased by 140 K with a 1.0 at% increase in O content, which is lower than that of Ti-22Nb-(0-2.0)O (at%) by 20 K. This may have been caused by the effect of the addition of Zr. This study confirmed that addition of oxygen to the Ti-Nb-Zr alloy increases the critical stress for slip due to solid solution hardening without being detrimental to the maximum recovery strain.

  • Sinterability and microwave dielectric properties of the $Zr1-x(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})xTiO_4$(x=4, 6) system ceramics have been investigated as functions of zinc-borosilicate(ZBS) glass contents and amount of $Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}O_2$ substitution with a view to applying the composition to LTCC technology. The addition of 25 wt% ZBS glass ensured successful sintering below $925^{\circ}C$. With increasing ZBS glass and $Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}O_2$ contents increased dielectric constant and sinterability but addition ZBS glass decreased the quality factor significantly due to the formation of an excessive liquid and second phases. The sintered $Zr4(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})6TiO_4$ system ceramics at $925^{\circ}C$ with 25 wt% ZBS glass demonstrated 27.7 in dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}_r$), 3,850 m quality factor($Q{\times}f_0$), and +6 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ in temperature coefficient of resonant frequency($\tau_f$).
