Rapidly Solidified (RS) Al-Zr base splats with various alloy contents were prepared by atomization-splat quenching method to understand the continuous and discontinuous precipitation in the aged alloys. And the RS alloys were consolidated by hot extrusion and swaging to analyze the effect of plastic deformation on the precipitation behavior. Discontinuous precipitation dominated at relatively low temperature in the Al-Zr alloy, whereas both V additions to Al-Zr alloys and hot metal working appeared to suppress the discontinuous precipitation. As continuous precipitation is favored in the grain interiors, the driving force for discontinuous precipitation become to disappear with a further process.
Research advances in dental implantology have led to the development of several different types of materials and it is anticipated that continued research will lead to advanced dental implant materials. Currently used pure titanium has relatively low hardness and strength which may limit its ability to resist functional loads as a dental implant. Ti-6Al-4V also has potential problems such as corrosion resistance. osseointegration properties and neurologic disorder due to aluminium and vanadium, known as highly toxic elements, contained in Ti-6Al-4V. Newly developed titanium based alloys(Ti-20Zr-3Nb-3Ta-0.2Pd-1In, Ti-20Zr-3Nb-3Ta-0.2Pd) which do not contain toxic metallic components were designed by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) with alloy design techniques using Zr, Nb, Ta, Pd, and In which are known as non-toxic elements. Biocompatibility and osseointegration properties of these newly designed alloys were evaluated after implantation in rabbit femur for 3 months. The conclusions were as follows : 1. Mechanical properties of the new designed Ti based alloys(Ti-20Zr-3Nb-3Ta-0.2Pd-1In, Ti-20Zr-3Nb-3Ta-0.2Pd) demonstrated close hardness and tensile strength values to Ti-6Al-4V. 2. New desinged experimental alloys showed stable corrosion resistance similar to the pure Ti but better than Ti-6Al-4V. However, the corrosion rate was higher for the new alloys. 3. Cell culture test showed that the new alloys have similar cell response compared with pure Ti and Ti-6Al-4V with no cell adverse reaction. 4. New designed alloys showed similar bone-metal contact ratio and osseointegration properties compared to pure Ti and Ti-6Al-4V after 3 months implantation in rabbit femur. 5. Four different surface treatments of the metals did not show any statistical difference of the cell growth and bone-metal contact ratio.
Pure Ti as well as Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibit excellent properties for dental implant applications. However, for a better biocompatibility it seems important to avoid in the composition the presence of V due to the toxic effects of V ion release. Thus Al and V free and composed of non-toxic element such as Nb, Zr alloys as biomaterials have been developed. Especially, Zr contains to same family in periodic table as Ti. The addition of Zr to Ti alloy has an excellent mechanical properties, good corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. In this study, the electrochemical characteristics of Ti-Zr alloys for biomaterials have been investigated using by electrochemical methods. Methods: Ti-Zr(10, 20, 30 and 40 wt%) alloys were prepared by arc melting and homogenized for 24 hr at $1000^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere. Phase constitutions and microstructure of the specimens were characterized by XRD, OM and SEM. The corrosion properties of the specimens were examined through potentiodynamic test (potential range of -1500 ~ 2000 mV), potentiostatic test (const. potential of 300 mV) in artificial saliva solution by potentiostat (EG&G Co, PARSTAT 2273. USA).
Bulk amorphous alloys with reasonable glass forming ability and large plasticity were found in Zr-Cu-Al alloys. Further increase in the GFA and the ductility is expected by appropriately choosing a fourth element. In this study, we select Be as the fourth element and added to the Zr-Cu-Al system to synthesize $(Zr_{57.4}Cu_{38.1}Al_{4.5})_{100-x}Be_x$(x=0~16) alloys and the glass forming ability and the plasticity were measured. With Be addition, the supercooled liquid region (${\Delta}T_x$), the plasticity and GFA as high as $134^{\circ}C$, 20.5%, 7 mm, respectively, can be obtained. Herein, we present the effect of Be addition on the variations of various mechanical properties and thermal characteristics of the $(Zr_{57.4}Cu_{38.1}Al_{4.5})_{100-x}Be_x$ alloys.
The theoretical optimum quaternary composition for improving the thermal stability of Al-Ti alloy was recently proposed. On the basis of the suggestion, quaternary Al-Ti-V-Zr alloy powders corresponding to the optimum compositions, one of which belongs to the region of the smallest lattice misfit between the matrix and the precipitates and the other belongs to the region of the smallest rate constant of coarsening, were prepared by mechanical alloying and the powders were vacuum-hot-pressed at $430^{\circ}C$ under the pressure of 800 MPa. The thermal stability of the specimens was evaluated by hardness testing after isothermal aging up to 400 hrs at various temperatures. The decrease of hardness of Al-Ti-V-Zr alloys was smaller than that of Al-Ti alloys. It was considered to be due to the formation of $Al_3Zr$ type and$Al_3Ti$ type quaternary precipitates having smaller lattice misfit than $Al_3Ti$ and the increase of volume fraction of All0v during the isothermal aging. The quaternary Al-Ti-V-Zr alloys corresponding to the smallest lattice misfit showed the most improved thermal stablilty and it was mainly considered to be due to the formation of All0v.
Effect of tin and iron content on the recrystallization behavior of temary Zr-0.8Sn-x%Nb alloys were studied. The specimens with 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 wt.% of iron were prepared under various annealing temperatures from $400^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$ and times from 30 to 5000 minutes after vacuum arc remelting. The recrystallization behavior was observed using a polarized optical microscope, TEM and micro-vickers hardness tester. The recrystallization temperature of the alloys slightly increased with iron content due to increase of activation energy. The grain growth of the alloys with 0.1 and 0.2 wt.% of iron occured rapidly, however, that of the alloys with 0.4 wt.% iron was gradually retarded due to precipitation. The hardness of the alloy with a high iron slightly increased by the precipitation of beta phase after annealing at $800^{\circ}C$.
The effects of Fe and V content on the characteristics of $\beta$ to $\alpha$ phase transformation for Zr-0.8Sn alloys were studied by optical and transmission electron microscopy. With increasing V content, $\beta{\rightarrow}\alpha+\beta$ transformation temperature decreased, thus allowing the width of $\alpha$-lath to be fine air-cooled Zr-0.8Sn-xV alloys. The width of $\alpha$-lath, however, was slightly increased with Fe content. While the $\beta$ to $\alpha$ transformed microstructures of water-quenched Zr-0.8Sn, Zr-0.8Sn-0.1Fe, Zr-0.8Sn-0.2Fe, Zr-0.8Sn-0.4Fe, Zr-0.8Sn-0.1V and Zr-0.8Sn-0.2V were mainly slipped martensite, that of water-quenched Zr-0.8Sn-0.4V was predominantly twinned martensite. The transition of slipped martensite to twinned martensite in Zr-0.8Sn-Xv was thought to be due to the decrease of $M_S$ temperature.

To investigate the effect of niobium and tin on the mechanical properties of zirconium alloys, the tensile test and the microstructural analysis were performed on the Zr-based binary(Zr-xNb, Zr-xSn) and ternary(Zr-0.8Sn-xNb, Zr-0.4Nb-xSn) alloys. As the content of Nb or Sn element increased, the strengths of the Zr-based alloys tended to gradually increase. The increase of mechanical strength was remarkable strength was remarkable in the range more than the solubility of Nb and Sn. The strengthening effects were discussed on the basis of the solid solution hardening, the precipitate hardening, the grain size effect, and the texture effect. The mechanical strength is mainly controlled by the solid solution hardening and additionally by the precipitate hardening in the content more than solubility limit of Nb and Sn. The grain refinement also has a slight effect on the strength of the zirconium alloys with the addition of Nb and Sn. However, the texture effect can be excluded due to the same Kearns number regardless of the content of alloying elements.

Brazing is an important manufacturing process in the fabrication of Heavy Water Reactor fuel rods, in which bearing and spacer pads are joined to Zircaloy-4 cladding tubes. The physical vapor deposition(PVD) technique is currently used to deposit metallic Be on the surfaces of pads as a filler metal. Amorphous Zr-Be binary alloys which are manufactured by rapid solidification process are under developing to substitute the conventional PVD-Be coating. In the present study, brazed joint with PVD and amorphous alloys of $Zr_{1-x}Be_{x}(0.3{\le}x{\le}0.5)$ as filler metals are compared by mechanism, microstructure and hardness. The thickness of brazed joint with amorphous alloys became much smaller than that of PVD-Be. The erosion of base metal did not occur in the brazed joint with amorphous alloys. The brazing mechanism for PVD-Be seems to be Be diffusion into Zr-4 with capillary action resulting from eutectic reaction while that for amorphous alloys are associated with the liquid phase formation in the brazed joint. The brazed joint microstructure with PVD-Be consists of dendrite while that with amorphous alloys is globular. The $Zr_{0.7}Be_{0.3}$ alloy shows the smooth interface with little erosion in the base metal and is recommended a most suitable brazing filler metal for Zircaloy-4.
Zr-xNb alloys (x = 0.2, 0.8, 1.5 wt.%) were prepared to study the characteristics of the phase transformation in Zr-Nb system. The samples were heat treated at ${\beta}$-temperature ($1020^{\circ}C$) for 20 min and then cooled with different cooling rate. The microstructures of the specimens having the same compositions were changed with cooling rate and Nb content. The Widmanst$\ddot{a}$tten structure was observed on the furnace-cooled sample. The relationship between ${\alpha}$-Widmanst$\ddot{a}$tten and ${\beta}$-phase was the {0001}${\alpha}$//{110}${\beta}$, <11$\bar{2}$0>//<111>. The ${\beta}$-phase in Widmanst$\ddot{a}$tten structure of Zr-Nb alloys containing Nb more than solubility limit was identified as ${\beta}_{Zr}$ phase which was a stable phase at high temperature. In the water quenched samples, two kinds of martensite structures were observed depending on the Nb-concentration. The lath martensite was formed in Zr-0.2, 0.8 wt.% Nb alloys and the plate martensite having twins was formed in Zr-1.5 wt.% Nb alloy.
