Objectives: Zooplankton communities play important roles in aquatic ecosystems as secondary producers that graze on phytoplankton and in turn are preyed upon by planktivorous and juvenile fish. They can shift their distribution, species composition, and abundance in response to environmental changes. Therefore zooplankton communities are important for understanding the energy flow in aquatic ecosystems and can be valuable indicators of environmental conditions. However, zooplankton in streams are still not well-studied, especially in northern Gyeonggi-do Province. This study aims to investigate the zooplankton communities in major streams in northern Gyeonggi-do Province. Methods: Zooplankton is important in the nutrient cycle and energy flow of aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, we surveyed zooplankton and measured temperature, DO, BOD, COD, T-N, T-P, and Chl-a in major streams (Sincheon, Gongneungcheon, Wangsukcheon, and Gapyeongcheon Streams) and stagnant water (Gomoji Reservoir). Results: The water quality in Gapyeongcheon Stream was the highest grade, while that of Gomoji Reservoir was mesoeutrophic and eutrophic during the research period. In the zooplankton community, Nauplius, Rotaria, and Monostyla spp. were dominant in Sincheon, Gongneungcheon, and Wangsukcheon Streams, and the dominance index was also high. In the case of Gapyeongcheon Stream, it was found that water quality and aquatic ecosystem health were good, and the lowest dominance index reflected this. In Gomoji Reservoir, Polyarthra spp., Nauplius, and Bosmina longirostris, which can be easily observed as eutrophication progresses, showed a high dominance rate. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the progress of eutrophication in further research. Conclusions: We collected data on the zooplankton communities in streams and investigated their characteristics. As a result, specific species were found to be dominant at each survey sites and some of them are known to be observed as eutrophication progresses. Therefore, we should investigate the zooplankton community of streams around us and apply ecological stream management.
Species composition and abundance of zooplankton were investigated around Dokdo in the East/Japan Sea in autumn 1999 and spring 2000. Vertical and horizontal hauls of a bongo net ($300{\mu}m$ mesh size, 60cm diameter) were made to collect zooplankton sample. Surface temperature and salinity ranged from $24.2^{\circ}C\;to\;25.1^{\circ}C$, and from 32.9psu to 33.2psu in September 1999, respectively. In May 2000, surface temperatures were $13.9^{\circ}C\;and\;14.2^{\circ}C$ at stations of A1 and A8, and salinity was 34.5psu at both stations. Zooplankton community was dominated by copepods which comprised 61% (September) and 60% (May) of total numerical abundance, respectively. The next dominant groups were appendicularians (11%) and chaetognaths (9%) in September 1999, and other crustaceans (27%) and appendicularians (4%) in May 2000. The 15.7% (September) and 23.2% (May) of copepods were in the juvenile stage of copepodites. The most dominant copepods were Oncaea media (10.4%) and Clausocalanus sp. (8.2%) which preferred warm water in September. In contrast, cold-water copepods such as Pseudocalanus minutus (9.4%) and Metridia pacifica (8.0%) were dominant in May. The results of cluster analysis based on Bray-Curtis index showed that zooplankton community were classified into two groups which represented different water mass. The average abundance of zooplankton in September was 2.1 times higher than that in May, and species number of them in September outnumbered that in May by 29 species. Zooplankton community varied in associated with a characteristic of warm waters which affected marine ecosystem differently in the study area depending on seasons.
The stable isotopes ratios ($\delta^{13}C\;and\;\delta^{15}N$) of two coexisting species of zooplankton (Daphnia longispina and Acanthodiaptomus pacificus) and POM were determined in two alpine lakes in Japan. The difference of $\delta^{13}C$ between A. pacificus and D. longispina was 4.1$\pm$0.9‰ in Lake Shirakoma, which was larger than in Lake Panke. Whereas the difference of $\delta^{15}N$ between A. pacificus and D. longispina (2.6$\pm$0.8‰) was larger in Lake Panke than in Lake Shirakoma. $\delta^{13}C$ of POM (-26.6$\pm$1.2‰) in Lake Shirakoma was different from those of zooplankton; it was heavier than those of D. longispina and A. pacificus by 3.7$\pm$1.6‰ and 7.8$\pm$1.0‰, respectively. Whereas $\delta^{15}N$ of POM (2.0$\pm$0.8‰) was similar with those of both A. pacificus and D. longispina. This implies that the two lakes may have different trophic structure and food sources for zooplankton, and each species are grazing on selectively different components of POM. The temporal variation of $\delta^{13}C$ for each zooplankton species was associated with lipid contents of zooplankton in both lakes. The results showed that stable isotope composition of zooplankton can be an useful information for understanding energy pathways and trophic structures in lakes.
Effect of environmental factors on the seasonal variations of zooplankton communities was investigated in the semi-closed Yeoja Bay, Korea from February, April to August, and November 2021. Out of a total 49 species of zooplankton were collected with a predominant of neritic copepods (mainly Paracalanus orientalis, Acartia omorii, Acartia ohtsukai, Centropages abdominalis, Ditrichocorycaeus affinis, and Oithona sp.), accounting for 58.9% of the total abundance of zooplankton. The diversity indices indicated a relatively highest in July, suggesting that diversity is influenced by seasonal temperature, N. scintillans, and neritic copepods species. A cluster analysis with non-metric multidimensional scaling revealed four groups of zooplankton communities. The February sample clustered into Group A, having the lowest mean total abundance and species diversity of zooplankton, consisting mainly of N. scintillans located the whole region. Cluster Group B from the spring season (April to May) and contained the species diversity with some neritic copepods. Cluster Group C from the summer season (June to August) mainly comprised P. orientalis, A. ohtsukai, Oithona sp., and hydromedusae. Cluster Group D from the autumn season (November) mainly comprised P. orientalis, Temora discaudata. Redundancy analysis indicated that abundance is positively correlated with temperature, salinity, and pico chlorophyll-a concentrations. This study showed that planktonic larvae (such as branchyura larvae) and some copepods (including A. omorii, A. ohtsukai, C. sinicus, and C. abdominalis) were significantly vulnerable to zooplankton community of temperature, salinity, and pico chlorophyll-a concentrations.
Zooplankton dynamics were investigated based on samples collected monthly during the period between November 1998 and October 1999 at 15 stations in Gwangyang and Sachon Bay. Zooplankters were quantitatively collected with horizontal towing through the surface and oblique hauling from the bottom to surface at each station, simultaneously. A total of 88 taxa of zooplankton were distributed and 60 taxa were identified to species. Copepods showed the prosperity in species number of 52 species. Number of taxa occurred in samples hauled obliquely always showed $2\~5$ more species than those captured in the surface except for stations near the Namhae bridge. In waters near Namhae bridge, fast current seemed to mix waters vertically. Seasonally these differences were more distinct in the spring and summer than those in other seasons possibly due to the stratification in warmer seasons. In quantitative aspects, differences between two layers seemed to be obscure. Spatial and temporal variations in species diversity of copepods showed more prosperity in pelagic realm than those in the surface. Our collection carrying out in day time might be one of the important reason to cause these differences in zooplankton dynamics between two layers.
Pre-monsoon dynamics of zooplankton community were investigated in the downstream of the Gagok stream flowing into the East Sea of Korea. Monthly sampling was carried out to collect zooplankters at five sites in the stream during the period between April and July 2014. Dissolved oxygen contents exceeded $7.0mg\;L^{-1}$ all the time. Water temperature was in a range of 15.7 to $24.9^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.4 to 8.8, respectively. A total of 75 taxa consisted of 36 species of rotifers, 16 species of cladocerans, 16 species of copepods, four kinds of aquatic insects, two kinds of decapods and one nematod was occurred. One species of marine copepod and one cladoceran, and one species of brackish rotifer and one copepod distributed at the station located in the stream mouth. Zooplankton abundance showed to vary from 42 to 4202 individuals $m^{-3}$ due to the explosion of aquatic insects and Alona sp. at site 2 located in the downstream in April. Heavy rainfall during the monsoon period seems to decrease the zooplankton abundance caused by diffusion and drifting to the sea. Species diversity indices were generally high between 1.2~2.3 and were recorded to be high at the downstream throughout the study period. With the zooplankton dynamics, the influence of the input of sea waters into the stream seemed to be confined to some hundred meters of the stream mouth facing the East Sea.
The spatial distribution and composition of the mesozooplankton community in the southeastern Barents Sea were observed at 17 stations, from 12 to 28 July 2002. Six taxa of zooplankton were found, including tintinnids, copepods, cumaceans, appendicularians, polychaetes, and barnacle larvae. Copepods were dominant, comprising 74% of the community. The copepod species Limnocalanus grimaldii, Pseudocalanus acuspes, Calanus glacialis, Calanus finmarchicus, and Microsetella norvegica, and the cumacean species Diastylis rathkei and Campylaspis rubicunda were identified. The overall mean abundance of the zooplankton was 72 indiv.l0 $\mu \textrm m^{-3}$ in the study area, ranging from 4 to 197 indiv.l0$\mu \textrm m^{-3}$. Zooplankton was more abundant at the oceanic than the coastal stations. The highest biomass measured was 97.4mg $\mu \textrm m^{-3}$, the mean biomass was 36.9 mg 10$\mu \textrm m^{-3}$, 93% of which was copepods. Pseudocalanus acuspes, C. glacialis, and C. finmarchicus predominated, accounting for 61% of abundance and 86% of biomass. Spatial distributions of the zooplankton community in the study area depended on the variations in water temperature and salinity, which were influenced by freshwater runoff from the continent.
Spatial and temporal variations of sea surface temperature (SST), abundances of copepods, euphausiids, amphipods, and chaetognaths were investigated in the western waters of the Korean Peninsula. Zooplankton and SST were monitored at 63 stations arrayed in six transects ($124^{\circ}00^{\prime}-126^{\circ}30^{\prime}E$, $34^{\circ}00^{\prime}-37^{\circ}00^{\prime}N$) in February, April, June, August, October, and December during 1978-2010. In general, SST increased $0.7-3.8^{\circ}C$ during the last three decades with spatio-temporal variations. SST was lowest in February and highest in August. SST was highest in the northernmost transect and declined gradually along transects to the south. The general pattern of interannual variations of SST was similar to the global pattern, which has been increasing. Trends of abundances of all zooplankton groups slightly increased interannually and peaked seasonally in June and August, except chaetognaths, which fluctuated around the long-term mean value with a seasonal peak in August and October. Abundances of zooplankton groups were highest in the northernmost transect while those of euphausiids were highest in the southern transect. We discuss the distribution patterns of SST and zooplankton groups in relation to oceanographic characteristics in the study area.
