Zooplankton community structure was investigated in the Saemangeum region in March, May, July and October of 2007 and 2008 in order to understand the potential effect of post construction of Saemangeum dyke on their temporal and spatial distribution. Mean abundance of zooplankton in the inner and outer area of the dyke, except for dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans, ranged from 173 to 15,830 ind.m$^{-3}$, showing higher variability in the inner area compared to the outer area. Zooplankton abundance was higher in the outer area than the inner area in 2007, and vice versa in 2008. In the inner area of the dyke, zooplankton abundance was the highest in May 2007 and March 2008. In the outer area of the dyke, abundance was the highest in October 2007 and July 2008. Brackish species such as Tortanus derjugini and Pseudodiaptomus inopinus were dominant prior to construction of the dyke, and appeared less frequently in the inner area. Marine zooplankton taxa such as juvenile hydromedusa, and calanoid copepods Acartiahongi and Paracalanus parvus s.l. dominated both areas of the dyke. In CCA analysis, zooplankton community structure in the inner and outer area was similar in March and May, but different in July and October. Temperature, salinity and COD were important environmental factors affecting zooplankton community structure. These results suggest that zooplankton community structure in the inner and outer area of Saemangeum dyke are significantly affected by whether the sluice gates are closed or open.
Our study indicates the zooplankton abundance with characteristics of water column and the vertical distribution in Lake Jinyang, South Korea. Seasonal changes of zooplankton community are determined by environmental parameters like water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, suspended solids and chlorophyll a. In lake Jinyang, this study showed that the zooplankton abundance in transition zone(St.1, St.2) was higher density than in lacustrine zone(St.3). Rotifers were dominant zooplankton and among them, Polyarthra spp., Keratella spp. and Nauplli(Copepoda) were common. But Cladoceran showed the low density. During survey period, zooplankton abundance with vertical distribution in surface layer(epilimnion) was higher than in bottom layer(hypolimninon). Zooplankton densities in Surface and middle layer showed positive relationship with water temperature and the densities in bottom layer(hypolimnion) showed positive relationship with chlorophyll a. Our assumption in spite of the short term study are supported by the facts that increase of temperature driven by climate change more maintains the thermocline duration by the summer temperature stratification. Thus the results suggest that the climate changes are an important source of changing zooplankton community feeding phytoplankton. So the zooplankton should be monitoring by the ecological management of Lake Jinyang to cope with climate changes like flood plain or drought.
This review summarizes the history of freshwater zooplankton research in Korean Society of Limnology and necessary future topics that are remain poorly investigated in South Korea based on main research topics of published articles focusing on lakes, reservoirs, rivers and wetland ecosystems. In Korea, a total 450 freshwater zooplankton species have been reported (85 species of cladocera, ca. 230 species of rotifera since 1939, and 138 species of copepoda), and they cover 10% of total zooplankton species list. In the present paper, we provide recent species list of zooplankton found in Korea and their taxonomic keys. Over periods of 45 years, there are 25 published papers for zooplankton biota in lentic ecosystems in Korean Journal of Ecology and Environment (KJEE). The ecology of zooplankton communities in rivers has focused on the mechanisms involved in regulating their abundance, diversity and spatio-temporal patterns of genus Bosmina and rotifers (genus Brachionus and Keratella) that are most frequently found from Korea. On the other hand, the studies on zooplankton in wetland has focused on Alona, Chydorus and Ceriodaphnia with special emphasis on their relationships with aquatic macrophytes. Even though studies on the freshwater ecosystem in Korea have a long history, a few of studies on zooplankton biota were conducted at rice paddy, Dumbeong and wetlands. During the last two decades, experimental advances in freshwater zooplankton ecology and understanding of structure and function of this biota were made from a series of articles mainly in journal of KJEE. For future studies, quantitative, experimental and interdisciplinary approaches would be key words to understand zooplankton ecology and their roles in aquatic ecosystems under changing environments, and we have suggested necessary zooplankton research fields and future directions.
The newly created wetlands in the Geum River Basin have undergone various environmental changes since their establishment in 2012. In this study, we evaluated the influence of environmental characteristics on zooplankton, which are sensitive to environmental changes, and considered appropriate wetland management plans. The thirty-two wetlands were divided into two groups based on the differences in their macrophyte cover. High species diversity and zooplankton density were found in cluster 2, which had abundant macrophyte cover. In contrast, cluster 1, with low plant cover, had lower species diversity and zooplankton density, primarily of pelagic zooplankton. To maintain species diversity and abundance of zooplankton in wetlands, we recommend implementing a management strategy that encourages the development of various plant communities through efficient water conveyance functions.
We conducted a comprehensive monitoring for freshwater food web in a wetland system (Jangcheok Lake), from May to October, 2011. Monthly sampling for zooplankton, fish as well as organic matters, was implemented. In order to understand the food web structure and energy flow, we applied stable isotope analysis to the collected samples, based on ${\delta}^{13}C$ and ${\delta}^{15}N$ values of epiphytic particulate organic matter(EPOM) and particulate organic matter (POM), epiphytic and planktonic zooplankton, fish (Lepomis macrochirus). In the study site, epiphytic and planktonic zooplankton was 24 and 30 species, respectively, and coincidence species between epiphytic and planktonic zooplankton were 20 species. Epiphytic zooplankton were more abundant during the spring and early summer (May to July); however, planktonic zooplankton were more abundant during the autumn (September to October) season. Stable isotope analysis revealed that fish and epiphytic zooplankton had seasonal variations on their food sources. EPOM largely contributed epiphytic zooplankton in spring (May), but increasing contribution of POM in autumn (September) was detected. However, planktonic zooplankton depended on only POM in both seasons. Fish utilized both epiphytic and planktonic zooplankton, but small sized (1~3 cm), fish preferred epiphytic zooplankton, where as larger sized (4~7 cm) fish tended to consume planktonic zooplankton, and epiphytic zooplankton had important role in energy transfer. This pattern was clear when results of spring and autumn stable isotope analysis were compared. From the results of this study, we confirmed that wetlands ecosystem supported various epiphytic and planktonic zooplankton species, they depend on other food items, respectively. L. macrochirus also showed a difference of food source according to the body size, they depend on seasonal density change of zooplankton. In particular, epiphytic zooplankton was very important for growth and development of young fish in the spring.

The spatio-temporal distribution of zooplankton community was investigated in Kyeonggi Bay with monthly samples from February 2001 to December 2001 at 5 stations along a transect between Incheon coastal waters and Seongap-Do. Monthly mean abundance of total zooplankton ranged from 1,100(Feb.)∼404,200 indiv./㎥ (Aug.) and annual mean abundance of total zooplankton was 55,000 indiv./㎥. The spatial mean abundance of total zooplankton varied from 114,600 indiv./㎥ (Incheon coastal waters) to 16,500 indiv./㎥ (Seongab-Do). Zooplankton abundance was higher in the inner bay than in the outer bay. Noctiluca scintillans, Acartia hongi, Oithona davisae, Paracalanus crassirostris, Paracalanus indicus and Oikopluera spp. were dominant species in Kyeonggi Bay and they contributed 95% of annual mean abundance of total zooplankton. Most of dominant species distributed widely in study area throughout the year, however seasonal abundance peak only happened in inner part of the Bay. This pattern suggests that the spatio-temporal distribution of zooplankton is affected by the variations of water temperature and phytoplankton standing stock.
To investigate latitudinal variations in the zooplankton community along the meridian line ($5^{\circ}N-12^{\circ}N$, $131.5^{\circ}W$), we measured temperature, salinity, nitrate, chlorophyll-a and zooplankton at depths above 200 m from July $10^{th}$ to $25^{th}$, 2003. For comparative analysis, data of the physico-chemical properties and chl-a were matched to the two sampling depths (surface mixed layer and thermocline depth-200 m) of zooplankton. Latitudinal differences in the mesozooplankton distribution were mainly influenced by divergence formed at a boundary line formed by currents of opposing directions, consisting of North Equatorial Current (NEC) and North Equatorial Counter Current (NECC). High concentrations of chl-a south of $9^{\circ}N$, caused by equatorial upwelling related nutrients, is thought to be affected by the role of this divergence barrier, supported by relatively low concentrations in waters north of $9^{\circ}N$. The latitudinal differences of the chl-a were significantly associated with the major groups of zooplankton, namely calanoid and cyclopoid copepods, appendicularians, ostracods, chaetognaths, invertebrate larvae, and others. And temperature significantly affected the latitudinal variation of radiolarians, siphonophores, salps and immature copepods. The latitudinal differences in the two factors, temperature and chl-a, which explained 71.0% of the total zooplankton variation, were characterized by the equatorial upwelling as well as the divergence at $9^{\circ}N$. The physical characteristics also affected the community structure and abundance of zooplankton as well as average ratios of cyclopoid versus calanoid copepods. The abundance of dominant copepods, which were consistent with chl-a, were often associated with the carnivorous zooplankton chaetognaths, implying the relative importance of bottom-up regulation from physical properties to predatory zooplankton during the study period. These results suggested that latitudinal distribution of zooplankton is primarily controlled by current-related divergences, while biological processes are of secondary importance in the northeastern Equatorial Pacific during the study period in question.
Distribution of zooplankton was investigated at 30 stations in Asan Bay, an embayment in the western coast of Korea, seasonally in August and October of 1991, and January and April of 1992. Abundances of zooplankton ranged from 240 to 1,458 indiv./m$^3$. Copepods were the predominant constituent, which comprised 88% of total zooplankton abundance. Acartia bifilosa dominated from fall to spring, A. pacifica in summer and Paracalanus parvus in fall. Abundances of zooplankton were related with phytoplankton standing crops and larval fish. In spring, when phytoplankton standing crops were high, zooplankton abundances were highly correlated with phytoplankton standing crops (r$^2$=0.66, p<0.01, n=30). Results of cluster analysis based on the abundance data of zooplankton showed that the study area was divided into two areas, i.e., outer-bay and inner-bay.
An algicidal effect of endemic algicidal bacterium (Pseudomonas putida) and rotifer zooplankton (Brachionus calyciflorus) on diatom Stephanodiscus hantzschii were examined in the filtered water, and were compared with those of bacterium plus ciliate. Bacteria removed as 80% of the diatom within 3.5 days, while ciliate and zooplankton suppressed 57% and 40% of diatom during the same period, respectively. Mixed treatment of bacteria plus ciliate removed as 54% of diatoms, while that of bacteria plus zooplankton decreased as 85%. Although single bacteria and mixed treatment of bacteria plus zooplankton quickly decreased the diatom in the initial of experiment, bacteria plus ciliate perfectly removed the diatom in culture flask within 5.5 days of the study. On the other hand, other single and mixed treatments did not clear the diatom during the same period, and over 10% of them still remain in culture flask. Predator biomass in the presence of algicidal bacteria showed the growth patterns; zooplankton gradually decreased, and ciliate sustained over 0.5 cells/ml. These results indicated that the addition of ciliate to the algicidal bacterium in controlling the diatom Stephanodiscus hantzschii is more effective than that of zooplankton. Therefore, this synergistic interaction relationship between the bacterium and ciliate play an important role in the bio-manipulation using bio-agents to control the diatomal bloom in freshwater lakes and streams.
Since construction of the estuarine barrage at the mouth of the Nakdong River, eutrophication and increased abundance of phytoplankton have occurred mainly due to the increased retention time in the reach. However, during the spring, there is a decrease in chlorophyll-a, as a result of an increase in zooplankton number, which preys upon phytoplankton and affects the value of chlorophyll-a. In order to emphasize the importance of zooplankton data in water quality simulation, zooplankton community data were used to simulate water quality and eutrophication at Mulgeum located in 27 km upstream from the barrage. WASP 7.2 was used as the water quality model for the river, using a monthly data set from 2003 to 2005 for model calibration and verification. The results showed that chlorophyll-a, DO, and total nitrogen in the river were simulated well during the verification period. The results of water quality simulation using zooplankton community data in the model were better than those with phytoplankton death rate, in terms of the absolute value of percent bias, root mean square error, and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency. Those results indicate the use of zooplankton data provides more accurate simulation results for chlorophyll-a and eutrophication.
