  • Commercially pure titanium (Cp-Ti) and Ti alloys (typically Ti-6Al-4V) display excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Although the chemical composition and topography are considered important, the mechanical properties of the material and the loading conditions in the host have, conventionally. Ti and its alloys are not bioactive. Therefore, they do not chemically bond to the bone, whereas they physically bond with bone tissue. The electrochemical deposition process provides an effective surface for biocompatibility because large surface area can be served to cell proliferation. Plasma electrolyte oxidation (PEO) enables control in the chemical composition, porous structure, and thickness of the TiO2 layer on Ti surface. Silicon (Si) in particular has been found to be essential for normal bone and cartilage growth and development. Zinc (Zn) plays very important roles in bone formation and immune system regulation, and is also the most abundant trace element in bone. The objective of this work was to study on electrochemical behaviors of PEO-treated Ti-6Al-4V Alloy in solution containing Zn and Si ions. The morphology, the chemical composition, and the microstructure analysis of the sample were examined using FE-SEM, EDS, and XRD. The potentiodynamic polarization and AC impedance tests for corrosion behaviors were carried out in 0.9% NaCl solution at similar body temperature using a potentiostat. The promising results successfully demonstrated the immense potential of Si/Zn-TiO2 coatings in dental and biomaterials applications.

  • By calcining at $750^{\circ}C$ for 30 h in $O_2$ stream after milling, $LiNi_{1-y}M_yO_2(M=Zn^{2+},\;Al^{3+}$, and $Ti^{4+}$, y = 0.005, 0.01, 0.025, 0.05, and 0.1) were synthesized and their electrochemical properties were investigated. All the samples had R3m structure. $LiNi_{1-y}Zn_yO_2$ (y = 0.025, 0.05, and 0.1) contained ZnO anuor $Li_2ZnO_2$ as impurities. Among the samples substituted with the same element, the samples with relatively large value of $I_{003}/I_{104}$ and the smallest R-factor had the largest first discharge capacity and good cycling performance. $LiNi_{0.975}A1_{0.025}O_2$ had the largest first discharge capacity (172.5 mAh/g) and good cycling performance (about $89.4\%$ of the first discharge capacity at the 20th cycle). This sample had the largest value of $I_{003}/I_{104}$ and the smallest R-factor among all the samples. In addition, the particles of this sample were finer and their size was more homogeneous than the other samples. $LiNi_{0.95}A1_{0.05}O_2$ had relatively large first discharge capacity 150.4 mAh/g and good cycling performance.

  • Zinc oxide film is a transparent conductive material and is used in optoelectronic devices in various fields. Therefore, characterization of the zinc oxide film will play a very important role in improving the performance of optoelectronic devices. Here, we will evaluate the morphological and structural characteristics of such a zinc oxide film based on the solution process. Specifically, the sol-gel method will be repeatedly performed to observe the change in material properties of the zinc oxide film according to the number of times of spin-coating. It was confirmed that crystallization proceeded as a result of performing the sol-gel method repetitively 5 times under constant solution conditions. At 7 times or more, the element composition and crystallinity tended to converge to a specific value. The average crystal size of the final zinc oxide film was calculated to be about 10.7 nm. In this study, the number of processes showing optimal crystallization was 7 times. The results and methodology of this study can be applied while varying various solution process variables and are expected to contribute to establishing optimal process conditions.

  • In this paper, PMPG (Piezoelectric Micro Power Generator) was investigated by ANSYS FEA (Finite Element Analysis) to decrease operating frequency and improve out power. The micro power generator was designed to convert ambient vibration energy to electrical power as a ZnO piezoelectric material. To find optimal model in low vibration ambient, the shape of power generator was changed with different membrane width, thickness, length, and proof mass size. Used the ANSYS modal analysis, bending mode and stress distribution of optimal model were analyzed. Also, the displacement with the frequency range was analyzed by harmonic analysis. From the simulation results, the resonance frequency of optimal model is about 373 Hz and confirmed the possibility of ZnO micro power generator for wireless sensor node applications.

  • Superoxide dismutase (SOD), one of the essential element of the antioxidant defense system, mainly removes $O^{-10}$ $_2$ and also prevents $O^{-10}$ $_2$ mediated reduction of iron and subsequent OH$^{-10}$ generation, which is highly toxic to the organism. Of these SOD enzymes, Cu, Zn-containing SOD (SODI) is an important component of the antioxidant defense system in eucaryotic cells. The SODI enzyme binds one copper and one zinc ion and displays the Greek Key $\beta$-barrel fuld. (omitted)

  • The Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) thin film solar cells have been achieved until almost 20% efficiency by NREL. These solar cells include chemically deposited CdS as buffer layer between CIGS absorber layer and ZnO window layer. Although CIGS solar cells with CdS buffer layer show excellent performance, the short wavelength response of CIGS solar cell is limited by narrow CdS band gap of about 2.42 eV. Taking into consideration the environmental aspect, the toxic Cd element should be replaced by a different material. Among Cd-free candidate materials, the CIGS thin film solar cells with ZnS buffer layer seem to be promising with 17.2%(module by showa shell K.K.), 18.6%(small area by NREL). However, ZnS/CIGS solar cells still show lower performance than CdS/CIGS solar cells. There are several reported reasons to reduce the efficiency of ZnS/CIGS solar cells. Nakada reported ZnS thin film had many defects such as stacking faults, pin-holes, so that crytallinity of ZnS thin film is poor, compared to CdS thin film. Additionally, it was known that the hetero-interface between ZnS and CIGS layer made unfavorable band alignment. The unfavorable band alignment hinders electron transport at the heteo-interface. In this study, we focused on growing defect-free ZnS thin film and for favorable band alignment of ZnS/CIGS, bandgap of ZnS and CIGS, valece band structure of ZnS/CIGS were modified. Finally, we verified the photovoltaic properties of ZnS/CIGS solar cells.

  • The solidification/stabilization mechanism of each cementious material was investigated. It was found that when $C_3$S was hydrated , the Pb element could be transferred to the insoluble Ca[Pb(OH)$_3$.$H_2O$]$_2$and the Cr element to the CaCr $O_4$$H_2O$. The addition of heavy metal tends to delay the hydration until initial 7 days. The Pb element as also delayed the hydration and the Cr element was substituted for the ettringite. On the occasion of the hydration of $C_4$ $A_3$ $S^{S}$, the Pb and Cr ions were solidified/stabilized by the substitution into the ettringite and/or monosulfate. Leaching of the Pb, Cr and Zn elements in the solidified material was extremely little, indicating that heavy metals were effectively solidified/stabilized in the hydrated cementious materials. Solidification/stabilization of heavy metal ions in the industrial wastes such as the STS, BF and COREX sludge was investigated. In case of the mixing ratio of cement and slag was 3 : 7, leaching of hazardous heavy metal ions was very little, indications that the solidification and stabilization was very successful.l.

Electrochemical deposition method is an attractive technique for the deposition of hydroxyapatite (HAp). However, the adhesions of these coatings to the Ti surface needs to be improved for clinical used. Plasma electrolyte oxidation (PEO) enables control in the chemical com position, porous structure, and thickness of the $TiO_2$ layer on Ti surface. In addition, previous studies h ave concluded that the presence of $Ca^{+2}$ and ${PO_4}^{3-}$ ion coating on porous $TiO_2$ surface induced adhesion strength between HAp and Ti surface during electrochemical deposition. Silicon (Si) in particular has been found to be essential for normal bone and cartilage growth and development. Zinc (Zn) plays very important roles in bone formation and immune system regulation, and is also the most abundant trace element in bone. The objective of this work was to study electrochemical characteristcs of Zn and Si coating on Ti-6Al-4V by PEO treatment. The coating process involves two steps: 1) formation of porous $TiO_2$ on Ti-6Al-4V at high potential. A pulsed DC power supply was employed. 2) Electrochemical tests were carried out using potentiodynamic and AC impedance methoeds. The morphology, the chemical composition, and the micro-structure an alysis of the sample were examined using FE-SEM, EDS, and XRD. The enhancements of the HAp forming ability arise from $Si/Zn-TiO_2$ surface, which has formed the reduction of the Si/Zn ions. The promising results successfully demonstrate the immense potential of $Si/Zn-TiO_2$ coatings in dental and biomaterials applications.
