Solvent extraction reaction of Zn(II) by Alamine336 from strong HCl solution up to 10 M was identified by analyzing the data reported in the literature. The equilibrium constant of this reaction was estimated by considering the complex formation between zinc and chloride ion. The necessary thermodynamic parameters, such as equilibrium constant for the formation of complexes and the interaction parameters, were evaluated from the thermodynamic data reported in the literature. The following solvent extraction reaction and the equilibrium constant was obtained by considering the activity coefficients of solutes present in the aqueous phase with Bromley equation. $Zn^{2+}\;2Cl^{-}\;+\;R_3NHCl_{org}\;=\;ZnCl_3R_3NH_{org},\;K_{ex}\;=\;6.33\;{\times}\;10^2$ There was a good agreement between measured and calculated distribution coefficients of Zn(II).
ZnO and ZnO:In films were deposited on the glass substrates by a spray pyrolysis method. It is found that ZnO films were polycrystalline with the preferred orientation (002) and have a hexagonal structure with lattice constants of a=3.242 $\AA$ and c=5.237 $\AA$. The crystalline structure of ZnO:In films deposited at the In content of 0~6.03 at. % were the same as that of ZnO films, but its lattice constants was slightly larger than those of ZnO films. The relative atomic ratios of metal ion of ZnO:In films were in accordance with those of the spray solution within the experimental error. The minimum resistivity of and the maximum carrier concentration of 19.1 $\Omega\cdot\textrm{cm}$ and the maximum carrier concentration of $2.11\times10^{19}\textrm{cm}^{-3]$ obtained from the ZnO:In films when In content was 2.76 at. %. The optical transmission of the sample grown at the In content of 3.93 at. % was about 95% in the wavelength between 400 and 800 nm.
A possibility of work function engineering on ZnO thin film is studied by in-situ and ex-situ doping process. The work function of ZnO thin film decreases with increasing boron and phosphorus doping quantity. But, the work function of Al-doped ZnO (AZO) thin film increases as the boron doping quantity incresess. The range of work function change on ZnO thin films is 3.5 eV to 5.5 eV. This result shows that the work function of ZnO thin film is indeed engineerable by changing materials of dopants and their compositional distribution of surface. We also discuss the possible mechanism of work function engineering on ZnO thin films.

We report on the fabrication and characterization of self- and artificially-controlled ZnO nanostructures have been investigated to establish nanostructure blocks for ZnO-based nanoscale device application. Systematic realization of self- and artificially-controlled ZnO nanostructures on $SiO_2/Si$ substrates was proposed and successfully demonstrated utilizing metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) in addition with a focused ion beam (FIB) technique. Widely well-aligned two-dimensional ZnO nanodot arrays ($4{\sim}10^4$ nanodots of 130-nm diameter and 9-nm height over $150{\sim}150{\mu}m^2$ with a period of 750 nm) have been realized by MOCVD on $SiO_2/Si$ substrates patterned by FIB. A low-magnification FIB nanopatterning mode allowed the periodical nanopatterning of the substrates over a large area in a short processing time. Ga atoms incorporated into the surface areas of FIB-patterned nanoholes during FIB engraving were found to play an important role in the artificial control of ZnO, resulting in the production of ZnO nanodot arrays on the FIB-nanopatterned areas. The nanodots evolved into dot clusters and rods with increasing MOCVD growth time.
The ZnS-SiO$_2$ composite films were fabricated by codeposition from two independent sources. The optical properties and microstructures of these composite films were investigated. The refractive indices of the composite films were compared those by Drude's fomula and showed a good agreement. it showed that microstructures of composite films are an armorphous. But microstructures of composite films with ion assisted deposition are changed from an armorphous to crystalline with increasing Zn mole fractions. We designed and fabricated a single layer antireflection coating on the crystalline silicon substrate using the refractive index of the composite films.
Photocatalysis has been applied to decompose the waste and toxic materials produced in daily life and in the global environment. Pure $TiO_2$ (Zn-$TiO_2$-0) and Zn-doped $TiO_2$ (Zn-$TiO_2$-x, x = 3-10 mol %) samples were synthesized using a novel sol-gel and ammonia-evaporation method. The Zn-doped $TiO_2$ samples showed high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue (MB). The physicochemical properties of the samples were investigated using XRD, SEM, ICP, DLS and BET methods. In addition, the most important measurement of photocatalytic ability was investigated by a UV-vis spectrophotometer. The effects of the mol % of zinc ion doping in $TiO_2$ on photocatalytic activity were studied. Among the mol % Zn ions investigated, the Zn-$TiO_2$-9 sample showed the highest photoreactivity. This sample removed 91.4% of the MB after 4 h, while the pure $TiO_2$ only removed 46.4% of the MB.

The crystal structure of partially dehydrated fully $Zn^{2+}$-exchanged zeolite Y was determined by X-ray diffraction techniques in the cubic space group $Fd\bar{3}m$ at 294(1) K and refined to the final error indices $R_1/wR_2$ = 0.035/0.119 for $|Zn_{35.5}(H_2O)_{13}|[Si_{121}Al_{71}O_{384}]$-FAU. About 35.5 $Zn^{2+}$ ions per unit cell are found at six distinct positions; sites I, I', a second I', II', II, and a second II. In sodalite cavities, the 11 water molecules coordinate to Zn(I'b) and/or Zn(II') ions; each of two $H_2O$ bonds to a Zn(IIb) in supercages. Two different $Zn^{2+}$ positions near 6-oxygen ring are due to their Si-Al ordering in tetrahedral site by Si/Al ratio leading to the different kinds of 6-rings.
The main objective of the present investigation is to improve the photoluminescent performance of existing $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ phosphors by introducing a new co-dopant. The co-doping effect of Mg and/or Cr upon emission intensity and decay time was studied in the present investigation. The co-dopants incorporated into the $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ phosphors are believed to alter the internal energy state so that the change in emission intensity and decay time can be expected. Both Mg and Cr ions have a favourable influence on photoluminescence prpperties, for example, the Mg ion enhances the intensity of manganese green emission and the Cr ion shortens the decay time. The enhancement in emission intensity of $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn,\;Mg$ phosphors was interpreted by taking into account the result from the DV-X${\alpha}$ embedded cluster calculation. On the other hand, the energy transfer between Mn and Cr ions was found to be responsible for the shortening of decay time in$Zn_2SiO_4:Mn,\;Cr$ phosphors.

Wastewater discharged by industrial activities of metal finishing and electroplating units is often contaminated by a variety of toxic or otherwise harmful substances which have a negative effects on the water environment. The treatment method of heavy metal-cyanide complexes wastewater by alkaline chlorination have already well-known($1^{st}$ Oxidation: pH 10, reaction time 30 min, ORP 350 mV, $2^{nd}$ Oxidation: ORP 650 mV). In this case, the efficiency for the removal of ferro/ferri cyanide by this general alkaline chlorination is very high as 99%. But the permissible limit of Korean waste-water discharge couldn't be satisfied. The initial concentration of cyanide was 374 mg/L(the Korean permissible limit of cyanide is 1.0 mg/L max.). So a particular focus was given to the treatment of heavy metal-cyanide complexes wastewater by $Zn^{+2}/Fe^{+2}$ ion and coprecipitation after alkaline chlorination. And we could meet the Korean permissible limit of cyanide(the final concentration of cyanide: 0.30 mg/L) by $Zn^{+2}/Fe^{+2}$ ion and coprecipitation(reaction time: 30 min, pH: 8.0, rpm: 240). The removal of Chromium ion by reduction(pH: 2.0 max, ORP: 250 mV) and the precipitation of metal hydroxide(pH: 9.5) is treated as 99% of removal efficiency. The removal of Copper and Nickel ion has been treated by $Na_2S$ coagulation-flocculation as 99% min of the efficiency(pH: $9.09\sim10.0$, dosage of $Na_2S:0.5\sim3.0$ mol). It is important to note that the removal of ferro/ferri cyanide of heavy metal-cyanide complexes wastewater should be employed by $Zn^{+2}/Fe^{+2}$ ion and coprecipitation as well as the alkaline chlorination for the Korean permissible limit of waste-water discharge.
Zinc ion could be recovered from metal plating wastewater with the spent iron oxide catalyst which was used in the plant of Styrene Monomer(SM) production. The zinc was recovered more than 98.7% at higher than pH 2.0. The saturation magnetization of the spent catalyst is enough high as 59.4 emu/g to apply in the solid-liquid separation after treating the wastewater. The mechanism of zinc recovery with the iron oxide catalyst could be a electro-chemical adsorption at pH 3.0~8.5, and a precipitation as $Zn(OH)_2$ at higher than pH 8.5.
