Aqueous zinc-ion batteries are considered as promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries for energy storage owing to their safety and cost efficiency. However, their lifespan is limited by the irreversibility of Zn anodes because of Zn dendrite growth and side reactions such as the hydrogen evolution reaction and corrosion during cycling. Herein, we present a strategy to restrict direct contact between the Zn anode and aqueous electrolyte by fabricating a protective layer on the surface of Zn foil via phosphidation method. The Zn3(PO4)2 protective layer effectively suppresses Zn dendrite growth and side reactions in aqueous electrolytes. The electrochemical properties of the Zn3(PO4)2@Zn anode, such as the overpotential, linear polarization resistance, and hydrogen generation reaction, indicate that the protective layer can suppress interfacial corrosion and improve the electrochemical stability compared to that of bare Zn by preventing direct contact between the electrolyte and the active sites of Zn. Remarkably, MnO2 Zn3(PO4)2@Zn exhibited enhanced reversibility owing to the formation a stable porous layer, which effectively inhibited vertical dendrite growth by inducing the uniform plating of Zn2+ ions underneath the formed layer.
Recently, the demand for Zn-Ni electrogalvanized steel sheets for home appliances and automobiles is increasing. Products should have a thick plating (30 to 40 g/m2) on both side with a thin thickness (≤ 0.8 mm) and the highest surface quality. By a high current density operation, current is concentrated in the edge part of the steel sheet, resulting in large surface dent defects due to dendritic plating. This can lead to a low productivity due to low line speed operation. To solve this problem, this study aimed to identify factors influencing dendritic plating. A cylindrical electroplating device was manufactured. Effects of cut edge shape and thickness of steel plate, current density, temperature, flow rate, electrolyte concentration, and pH on dendrite generation of Zn-Ni electroplating were examined. To investigate effect of edge shape of the steel sheet, the steel sheet was manufactured using three processing methods: shearing, polishing after shearing, and laser. Relative effects thickness and cut edge processing methods of the steel plate, current density, temperature, flow rate, electrolyte concentration, and pH of plating solution on dendrite plating were investigated. To prevent dendrite plating, an edge mask was manufactured and its application effect was investigated.
The effect of welding condition on the microstructures of the weld metal in A7N01 welded by $CO_2$ laser was investigated. The number of ripples was increased with decreasing power and increasing welding speed. In the bead without ripple lines, the subgrain microstructures distribution from the fusion line toward the center of the bead were in the order of cellular, dendritic and equiaxed dendrite. However, in the bead with ripple lines, cellular and dendritic were formed between the fusion boundary and the ripple line. Inaddition, those structures were also observed between the ripple line. Equiaxed dendrites were formed only at the center line region. Cellular and dendritics formed near the ripple line were larger than those formed near the fusion boundary. The cooling rates estimated by the dendrite arm spacing were in the range of 200 to 1150oC/s. Cooling rate was increased with decreasing the power and increasing the welding speed. Mg and Zn segregated at the boundaries of cellulars and dendritics, Mg was segregated more than Zn. The segregation of Mg and Zn decreased with increasing cooling rate. Hardness of the weld metal was lower than that of the base metal in all welding conditions and increased as the cooling rate increased.

In the present work, a phase-field model for dendritic solidification is applied to hot-dip ZnAlMg coatings to elucidate the morphology of zinc dendrites and the solute segregation leading to the formation of eutectics. These aspects define the microstructure that conditions the corrosion resistance and the mechanical behaviour of the coating. Along with modelling phase transformation and solute diffusion, the implemented model is partially coupled with the tracking of crystal orientation in solid grains, thus allowing the effects of surface tension anisotropy to be considered in multi-dendrite simulations. For this purpose, the composition of a hot-dip ZnAlMg coating is assimilated to a dilute pseudo-binary system. 1D and 2D simulations of isothermal solidification are performed in a finite element solver by introducing nuclei as initial conditions. The results are qualitatively consistent with existing analytical solutions for growth velocity and concentration profiles, but the spatial domain of the simulations is limited by the required mesh refinement.
The effects of Bi and Sb additions on the microstructures and casting properties in lead-free Cu-Zn-Sn broze were investigated. (1) When only Bi was added to the bronze, Bi was precipitated on the ${\delta}$ phase of ${\alpha}$ dendrite cell boundary. When Bi and Sb were added together, Bi was precipitated on the ${\delta}_A$ which was the Sb-rich area in the ${\delta}$ phase. (2) The addition of Sb accelerated the formation of ${\delta}$ phase, and when Sb, Bi and Pb were added, Bi and Pb were precipitated as mixed solution in the ${\delta}_A$ phase. (3) The combined addition of Sb and Bi resulted in the suppression of shrinkage due to the complementary effects of the mass feeding of ${\alpha}$-dendrite cluster covered with ${\delta}$ phase and sealing of micro-shrinkage in the ${\delta}$ phase by solidification expansion of Bi.
Characteristics of the weld defect, such as a blowhole and a pit in lap-jointed fillet Co₂ welds of Zn-coated steel sheet were studied in order to make clear the sequence of the blowhole formation during welding. Main conclusions obtained are as follows: 1) Blowhole, wormhole and pit were found in fillet welds, although the optimum welding condition of 200A-23V-100cm/min was applied. 2) Zn was only detected at the solidification boundary at the early stage of the blowhole formation. 3) Most of the blowholes was started to form at lap-joint by the Zn vapor. With increasing of the Zn vapor and its pressure, the blowhole was develope to th bed surface until the completion of weld solidification. 4) The behavior of the blowhole in growth was similar to that of the columnar dendrite during welding.
The typical microstructure of Al-5%Mg-2%Zn cast alloy mainly consists of an aluminum matrix with a small amount of AlMgZn 2nd phase. The secondary dendrite arm spacing and the grain size of the cast alloy tend to be inversely proportional to the section thickness of casting; however, the tensile properties cannot be said to be clearly related to the cast microstructure. After T6 heat treatment, the tensile strength of the alloy was enhanced significantly. TEM analysis results show that very fine AlMgZn precipitates were formed after the heat treatment. The corrosion resistance, measured according to the corrosion potential, was found to increase slightly after the conducting of heat treatment.
Microstructural characteristics and strengthening behavior in Mg-5wt%Zn-0.6wtZr alloys have been investigated by a combination of optical, secondary electron and transmission electron microscopy, differential thermal analysis, and hardness and tensile, creep property measurements. The result have been compared with those of Mg-5wt%Zn alloys. The as-squeeze cast microstructure consisted of dendrite ${\alpha}-Mg$, interdendrite or intergranular $Mg_7Zn_3$ and fine dispersoids of $ZnZr_2$. The size of secondary solidification phases in Mg-5wt%Zn-0.6wtZr alloys was significantly smaller than that of the Mg-5wt%Zn alloys due to the existence of fine dispersoid of $ZnZr_2$ which also effected the refinement of grain size. TEM study showed that the main cause of age hardening is formation of fine rodlike ${\beta}_1\;'$ precipitates as well as fine $ZnZr_2$ dispersoids. Due to the observed microstructural characteristics mechanical propeties of Mg-5wt%Zn-0.6wtZr alloys was found to be superior to those of Mg-5wt%Zn alloys.
Influence of trace amount of Ca addition on the corrosion resistance was comparatively investigated in solutionized Mg-4%Zn and Mg-4%Zn-0.1%Ca alloys. In as-cast state, the alloys were characterized by primary ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ dendrite with MgZn intermetallic compound particles. After solution-treatment, both alloys consisted of single ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ phase by dissolution of the compound particles into the matrix. It was found from the immersion and electrochemical corrosion tests that the Mg-4%Zn alloy had better corrosion resistance than the Mg-4%Zn-0.1%Ca alloy. Morphological and compositional analyses on the surface corrosion products indicate that the incorporation of Ca oxide with low PBR value into the surface corrosion products would be responsible for the decreased corrosion resistance of the Ca-containing alloy.
