Formation of the weld defect, such as a blowhole and a pit in lap-jointed fillet arc welds has been a serious problem in arc welding of Zn-coated steel sheet. In this study, the relationship among welding conditions, welding materials and defect formation was investigated in order to minimize these defects in the CO₂ welds. In addition, the arc stability of the commercial welding wires was evaluated for revealing their effects on defect formation. Main conclusions obtained are as follows:1) There was no difference between shear tensile strength of the sound welds and that of the welds with blowholes whose diameters are less than 0.5mm. However, the welds with blowholes whose diameters are equal or larger than 0.5mm and pits exhibited tensile strength 10~20% and 30~40% lower than that of the sound welds respectively.2) The optimum welding condition to effectively prevent or reduce the weld defects formation are as follows:- The welding variables of 220A-23V-100cm/min and 120A-190V-30cm/min were recommended for minimizing the weld defects.- The gap between the two sheets at the lap-joint should be controlled to more than 0.2mm- Solid wire was less susceptible to the formation of the weld defects than the flux-cored wire.- The low welding current condition produced less weld defects than the hihg welding current condition.3) One of the reason why the amount of the defect was reduced at the low welding current was the gas discharging by the active agitation of the molten pool, due to an increasing in the number of the short circuit. It has been reported that good quality weld beads are not easily obtained during the $CO_2$ CW laser welding of primer coated plate. However, by introducing a small gap clearance in the lap position, the zinc vapor can escape through it and sound weld beads can be acquired. Therefore, this study examines for keyhole behavior by observing the laser-induced plasma and investigates the relation between keyhole behavior and formation of weld defect. Laser-induced plasma has accompanied with the vaporizing pressure of zinc ejecting from keyhole to surface of primer coated plate. This dynamic behavior of plasma was very unstable and this instability was closely related to the unstable motion of keyhole during laser welding. As a result of observing the composition of porosity, much of Zn element was found from inner surface of porosity. But Zn was not found from the dimple structure fractured at the weld metal. By analyzing of vaporizing element in laser welding, a component ratio of Zn was decreased by introducing a small gap clearance. Therefore we can prove that the major cause of porosity is the vaporization of primer in lap position. Mechanism of porosity-formation is that the primer vaporized from the lap position accelerates dynamic behavior of the key hole and the bubble separated from the key hole is trapped in the solidification boundary and romaines as porosity.

In this study, Al and Zn arc thermal spray coatings were carried out onto the substrate of SS400 steel to improve corrosion resistance and durability of hull structural steel for ship in marine environment. Therefore cavitation-erosion test was conducted to evaluate the durability of painted and thermal spray coated specimens. And then the damaged surface morphology and weight loss were obtained to compare with each other, respectively. As a result, the painted specimen was the poorest cavitation resistance characteristics because surface damage behavior appeared to be exfoliated in bulk shape during the cavitation experiment. And Zn thermal spray coating layer presented the significant surface damage depth due to relatively low surface hardness and local cavitation damage tendency. On the other hand, as a result of the weight loss analysis, the painting layer presented the poorest cavitation resistance and the Al thermal spray coating layer relatively showed the best results after cavitation experiment.
Steel corrosion is one of the most critical deteriorations in concrete structures due to the problems associated with both durability and structural safety issues. For protection of steel against corrosion problems, researches to improve concrete durability and steel corrosion protection such as rebar coating by hot-dip galvanizing steel have been carried out. This study was performed to quantitatively evaluate anti-corrosion and structural performance of concrete structures reinforced with hot-dip galvanizing steel rebar. Preliminary tests for several metal coatings such as zinc, aluminum, and their alloy (Zn 45% + AL 55%) were performed. After evaluation of corrosive characteristics, Zn was selected for the coating material and the corrosion behaviors in Zn-coated steel were evaluated in various conditions. Furthermore, tensile and adhesive strengths were evaluated for the normal and the hot-dip galvanized steel. The crack patterns and structural behaviors of RC specimens with the normal and coated steel were investigated. Also, corrosion characteristics including corrosion in various coating metal and potential change in metal with notch were evaluated. Structural performances of tensile and adhesive strengths as well as RC beam behavior under flexural/shear loading were evaluated. The test and evaluation results showed that the applicability of hot-dip galvanized steel rebar can be used as corrosion resistant reinforcements for RC structures.
In the automotive industry, the hole expanding test is widely used to assess the formability of punched holes in sheets. This test provides a good representation of formability within the framework defined by the ISO 16630 standard. During hole expanding tests on galvanized high strength steels, a negative effect was observed when there was a delay between hole punching and expansion, as compared to performing both operations directly. This effect is believed to be caused by hydrogen aging, which occurs when hydrogen diffuses towards highly-work hardened edges. Therefore, the aim of this study is to demonstrate the migration of hydrogen towards work-hardened edges in high strength Zn-coated steel sheets using a novel Thermal Desorption Analyzer (TDA) designed for small samples. This newly-developed TDA setup allows for the quantification of local diffusible hydrogen near cut edges. With its induction heating and ability to analyze Zn-coated samples while reducing artifacts, this setup offers flexible heat cycles. Through this method, a hydrogen gradient is observed over short distances in shear-cut galvanized steel sheets after a certain period of time following punching.
Laser machining technique, which is used focusing pulse YAG laser beam irradiation was applied to form area ratio controlled model cut-edge on pre painted Zn coated steels. A corrosion behavior of formed model cut-edge was investigated by rest potential measurement in 1 mol $m^{-3}$ NaCl with and without 0.5 kmol $m^{-3}$$H_3BO_4$/0.05kmol$m^{-3}$$Na_2B_4O_7$. The rest potential showed almost constant value with fluctuations. The amplitude of fluctuations increased with exposed area of steel surface. White corrosion products of zinc oxide and simonkollite was formed after the experiments at the formed model cut-edge.

Recently, due to the rapid spread and continuation of COVID-19, customer demand for health and hygiene has increased, requiring the development of new products that express antiviral and antibacterial properties. In particular, viruses are much smaller in size than bacteria and have a fast propagation speed, making it difficult to kill. POSCO has developed eco-friendly PCM color coated steel sheets with excellent antiviral properties by introducing inorganic composite materials to the color coating layer on the surface of Zn-Al-Mg alloy plated steels. The virus is not only destroyed by adsorption of metal ions released from the surface of the coating film, but is also further promoted by the generation of reactive oxygen species by the reaction of metal ions and moisture. As a result of evaluating the developed products under the International Standard Evaluation Act, the microbicidal activity was 99.9% for viruses, and 99.99% for bacteria and 0% fungi. In particular, excellent results were also shown in the durability evaluation for life cycle of the product. The developed product was applied as a wall of school classrooms and toilets and ducts for building air conditioning, resulting in excellent results. Developed products are being applied for construction and home appliances to practice POSCO's corporate citizenship.
