Parameters affecting the recovery of silver (Ag) using photocatalytic ZnO nanopowder prepared by solution-combustion method.

  • Nanometer sized zinc oxide (ZnO) powder was synthesized by a novel "solution-combustion method" and its photocatalytic activity was evaluated with the recovery of Ag from a used photofilm developing solution. Different parameters affecting the reaction rates like wavelength of the W light used, reaction temperature, mass of the used photocatalyst, and effect of scavenger were tested. The optimum parameters were found as follows. UV wavelength of less than 385nm, reaction temperature between 40- 60 $^{\circ}C$, photocatalyst concentration of 3-6 g/1, and scavenger concentration of 0.3-0.4 g/1.

Boosting up the photoconductivity and relaxation time using a double layered indium-zinc-oxide/indium-gallium-zinc-oxide active layer for optical memory devices

  • Solution-processed metal-oxide semiconductors have been considered as the next generation semiconducting materials for transparent and flexible electronics due to their high electrical performance. Moreover, since the oxide semiconductors show high sensitivity to light illumination and possess persistent photoconductivity (PPC), these properties can be utilized in realizing optical memory devices, which can transport information much faster than the electrons. In previous works, metal-oxide semiconductors are utilized as a memory device by using the light (i.e. illumination does the "writing", no-gate bias recovery the "reading" operations) [1]. The key issues for realizing the optical memory devices is to have high photoconductivity and a long life time of free electrons in the oxide semiconductors. However, mono-layered indium-zinc-oxide (IZO) and mono-layered indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (IGZO) have limited photoconductivity and relaxation time of 570 nA, 122 sec, 190 nA and 53 sec, respectively. Here, we boosted up the photoconductivity and relaxation time using a double-layered IZO/IGZO active layer structure. Solution-processed IZO (top) and IGZO (bottom) layers are prepared on a Si/SiO2 wafer and we utilized the conventional thermal annealing method. To investigate the photoconductivity and relaxation time, we exposed 9 mW/cm2 intensity light for 30 sec and the decaying behaviors were evaluated. It was found that the double-layered IZO/IGZO showed high photoconductivity and relaxation time of 28 uA and 1048 sec.

전해채취에 의한 Gallium의 정제기술 (Method for Making High Purity Gallium by Electrowinning)

  • 갈륨은 주로 산화물 반도체용 타겟이나 LED 칩을 만드는 중요한 소재로 사용하고 있는데 아직까지 폐기물로부터 재자원화에 의한 순환량이 매우 낮다. 이로 인해 갈륨을 함유하고 있는 대부분의 폐자원은 해외로 유출되고 원재료는 수입에 의존하고 있다. 따라서 희유금속인 갈륨을 함유하고 있는 저품위 갈륨으로부터 갈륨을 회수하여 고순도화하는 방법을 연구 하였다. 전처리 과정으로 스크랩을 미분쇄하여 산으로 침출하였다. 침출액내 인듐은 치환으로 석출시켜 분리한 후 알칼리를 사용하여 갈륨과 아연을 수산화물로 침전시켜 여과 분리하였다. 갈륨과 아연수산화물을 알칼리용액으로 침출시켜 전해액을 제조하였고 전해채취로 갈륨과 아연메탈을 회수하였다. 갈륨과 아연은 진공정제를 통하여 아연을 제거하고 고순도의 갈륨을 회수하였다.

  • Co의 리싸이클링을 원활히 하기 위하여 괴상 superalloy 스크랩을 용융Zn으로 분해할 때의 최적처리조건을 조사하였다. 조사한 superalloy는 Co-기 Mar-M-509와 X-45 그리고 Ni-기 Rene 80이었다. Zn/스크랩 비율이 1.5~6.5인 장입물을 질소 분위기에서 $750~900^{\circ}C$에서 1~7.5시간 동안 가열하였다. 용융된 Zn은 스크랩을 용해하였고, Zn은 $850~900^{\circ}C$에서 4~6시간 동안 진공증류하여 제거되었다. Mar-M-509와 Rene 80의 최적 처리조건은 용해온도 약 $^850{\circ}C$, Zn/스크랩 비율 약 5, 그리고 용해시간 약 5.5시간이었다. Zn처리 superalloy 생성물은 쉽게 부스러졌으며, 산 용액에 의해 빠르게 침출되었다. Mar-M-509 또는 Rene 80의 경우, 미처리 스크랩(9mm 조각)을 화학양론양 5배의 6N HCl으로 $90^{\circ}C$에서 3시간 동안 처리하면 침출도는 약 1.5~7.2%에 지나지 않았으나, Zn처리 생성물(-20 메쉬의 것)의 침출도는 약 89.0~93.0%나 되었다.

  • 전기차용 리튬이온배터리의 수요가 증가함에 따라 향후 발생할 폐리튬이온배터리 중의 유가금속 회수가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 리튬이온배터리의 NCM계 양극재를 수소환원과 수침출에 의해 리튬을 수산화리튬으로 회수할 때의 회수율에 미치는 반응온도의 영향을 조사하였다. 반응온도가 상승함에 따라 수소에 의한 NiO, CoO의 환원에 의해 무게 감소율이 반응초기부터 급격하게 증가하였으며 동시에 H2O 발생량도 증가하였다. 602 ℃ 이상에서는 양극재 중의 Ni, Co가 전부 환원되어 금속상으로 존재하였다. 그리고 수소환원 온도의 상승과 함께 Li 회수률도 증가하였으나 704 ℃ 이상에서는 약 92 % 이상의 유사한 수준을 나타내었다. 따라서 폐Li이온 배터리의 전처리로 수소환원하는 것에 의해 리튬만 사전에 회수하고 잔사를 재처리하면 효율적으로 유가금속을 분리하여 회수할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

Zinc finger protein 143 expression is closely related to tumor malignancy via regulating cell motility in breast cancer

  • We previously reported the involvement of zinc-finger protein 143 (ZNF143) on cancer cell motility in colon cancer cells. Here, ZNF143 was further characterized in breast cancer. Immunohistochemistry was used to determine the expression of ZNF143 in normal tissues and in tissues from metastatic breast cancer at various stages. Notably, ZNF143 was selectively expressed in duct and gland epithelium of normal breast tissues, which decreased when the tissue became malignant. To determine the molecular mechanism how ZNF143 affects breast cancer progression, it was knocked down by infecting benign breast cancer cells with short-hairpin (sh) RNA-lentiviral particles against ZNF143 (MCF7 sh-ZNF143). MCF7 sh-ZNF143 cells showed different cell-cell contacts and actin filament (F-actin) structures when compared with MCF7 sh-Control cells. In migration and invasion assays, ZNF143 knockdown induced increased cellular motility in breast carcinoma cells. This was reduced by the recovery of ZNF143 expression. Taken together, these results suggest that ZNF143 expression contributes to breast cancer progression.

Kinetics and Thermodynamic Properties Related to the Adsorption of Copper and Zinc onto Zeolite Synthesized from Coal Fly Ash

  • Na-A zeolite (Z-Cl) was synthesized from coal fly ash, which is a byproduct of coal combustion for the generation of electricity. The adsorption of $Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}ions$ onto Z-C1 was investigated via batch tests over a range of temperatures (303.15 to 323.15 K). The resultant experimental equilibrium data were compared to theoretical values calculated using model equations. With these results, the kinetics and equilibrium parameters of adsorption were calculated using Lagergren and Langmuir-Freundlich models. The adsorption kinetics revealed that the pseudo second-order kinetic mechanism is predominant. The maximum adsorption capacity ($q_{max}$) values were 139.0-197.9 mg $Zn^{2+}$/g and 75.0-105.1 mg $Cu^{2+}/g$. Calculation of the thermodynamic properties revealed that the absorption reactions for both $Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ were spontaneous and endothermic. Collectively, these results suggest that the synthesized zeolite, Z-C1, can potentially be used as an adsorbent for metal ion recovery during the treatment of industrial wastewater at high temperatures.

Production of Fine ZnO Powders by Carbothermal Reduction

  • Carbothermal reduction has been one of the important processes for the production of ceramic raw materials such as silicon carbide, silicon nitride, boron carbide, etc. The process has also been one of several trials for the recovery of ZnO from ZnO-containing waste. It usually involves two consecutive steps: the evolution of Zn vapor and its oxidation with air. In this study a ZnO-containing raw material is reduced by carbon at $1250^{\circ}C$ and the evolved Zn vapor is oxidized with air, resulting in fine powders of ZnO. computer programs, THERMO and PYROSIM developed by MINTEK, are used to simulate the process thermodynamically and the results are compared with the experimental results. It is shown that the ZnO-containing raw material can be reduced and can form fine ZnO with the yield as high as 98.7% under a proper condition. Based on these results, a process is engineered for the production of ZnO in a rotary kiln at a rate of 3 tons/day. The produced ZnO powders show properties suitable to the usual applications in ceramic industries with a purity of > 95wt% and an average particle size of ∼3${\mu}m$.

메밀경작에 의한 논토양 내 아연존재형태 및 탈수소효소-활성도 변화

  • 아연 폐광지 부근의 논토양에서 메밀(Fagopyrum esculentum)을 이용한 식물상추출공법 적용 전후에 대해 토양 내 아연 형태 및 탈수소효소활성도 변화를 조사하였다. 메밀을 식재한 논토양은 아연농도는 약 600 mg/kg인 고오염 구역과 약 300 mg/kg인 저오염 구역으로 구분되었다. 메밀을 재배한 결과, 메밀은 고농도 구역에서 아연에 의한 성장 저해를 입었으나 토양으로부터 식물유효성 형태의 아연을 흡수하여 식물체내에 축적하였고, 아연 독성으로 저해된 토양 내 탈수소효소활성도를 증가시킨 것으로 나타났다. 2개월 동안 메밀을 재배한 후 근권 토양 내 식물유효성 아연 농도는 고오염 구역에서 약 25% 감소, 저오염 구역에서 약 70% 감소하였다. 근권 토양에서 감소한 식물유효성 아연의 양은 식물체내에 축적된 아연의 양과 유사하여(Recovery 92$\sim$107%), 메밀이 토양 내 식물유효성 아연을 제거 및 축적하였음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 토양 내 총 아연 농도와 토양 탈수소효소활성도는 음의 상관관계를 가진 것으로 나타났으며, 초기에 고오염 토양에서는 저오염 토양에 비하여 토양 탈수소효소활성도가 약 2배 저해되었지만 메밀 재배 후 각각의 근권에서 약 35% 증가한 것을 확인하였다.

Evaluation of Acid Digestion Procedures to Estimate Mineral Contents in Materials from Animal Trials

  • Rigorously standardized laboratory protocols are essential for meaningful comparison of data from multiple sites. Considering that interactions of minerals with organic matrices may vary depending on the material nature, there could be peculiar demands for each material with respect to digestion procedure. Acid digestion procedures were evaluated using different nitric to perchloric acid ratios and one- or two-step digestion to estimate the concentration of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc in samples of carcass, bone, excreta, concentrate, forage, and feces. Six procedures were evaluated: ratio of nitric to perchloric acid at 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1 v/v in a one- or two-step digestion. There were no direct or interaction effects (p>0.01) of nitric to perchloric acid ratio or number of digestion steps on magnesium and zinc contents. Calcium and phosphorus contents presented a significant (p<0.01) interaction between sample type and nitric to perchloric acid ratio. Digestion solution of 2:1 v/v provided greater (p<0.01) recovery of calcium and phosphorus from bone samples than 3:1 and 4:1 v/v ratio. Different acid ratios did not affect (p>0.01) calcium or phosphorus contents in carcass, excreta, concentrate, forage, and feces. Number of digestion steps did not affect mineral content (p>0.01). Estimated concentration of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc in carcass, excreta, concentrated, forage, and feces samples can be performed using digestion solution of nitric to perchloric acid 4:1 v/v in a one-step digestion. However, samples of bones demand a stronger digestion solution to analyze the mineral contents, which is represented by an increased proportion of perchloric acid, being recommended a digestion solution of nitric to perchloric acid 2:1 v/v in a one-step digestion.
