  • The synthesis of NaA zeolite membrane on a porous alumina support from clear solution by using hydrothermal reaction was investigated. Effects of reaction temperature, reaction time and seeding for transformation of zeolite A membrane and powder which are produced in the reactor were monitored through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The transformation process of producing Zeolite A membrane starts from the formation of the compact and continuous membrane on the surface of porous support from clear solution. The large Zeolite A poly-crystal was then farmed through the dissolution process. Finally, the process was advanced from sodalite to amorphous. In case of powder, sodalite is formed in the early stage of reaction because of surrounding space difference between membrane and powder crystal. Discrete surrounding space of powder crystal makes easy to transform to sodalite. From Zeolite A to amorphous through transformed product was rapidly advanced at high temperature while the membrane with somewhat low coverage was obtained at low temperature. A compact and continuous zeolite A membrane was synthesized at $120^{\circ}C$ in 12-hour period.

  • In this study, the physicochemical characterization and adsorption performance of air pollutants (VOCs, SO2, and CO2) were evaluated for the recycling of zeolite used in the ion exchange process. The surface characteristics of the zeolite used were confirmed through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, and the composition and specific surface area were measured through X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). There was no change in the surface properties of the used zeolite, but the content of potassium and calcium increased and the specific surface area decreased. The toluene, sulfur oxides, and carbon dioxide adsorption performance of the used zeolite was evaluated, and it was confirmed that the performance was improved compared to the fresh zeolite. In particular, for toluene and sulfur oxides, the adsorption amount increased by 2.6 times and 2.3 times, respectively, which might be due to the enhancement of the polymerization reaction and the increase of the base point, according to the composition of the used zeolite.

  • NaX zeolite crystals of a uniform particle size of 50 $\mu$m were grown by continuous crystallization method from seed crystals (10~20 $\mu$m) added into a 0.5~2.0 g mother liquor having a composition $3.5Na_2O : Al_2O_3: 2.1SiO_2: 1000H_2O$. In order to investigate the crystal growing by continuous method, the mother solution was supplied after 7 days, 5 days, 3 days and 1 day, respectively. The seeding resulted in an increase in the fraction of large crystals compared with unseeded batches and successfully led to an uniform NaX zeolite crystal. It was postulated that the seeding in the synthesis mixture leaded out increase of surface area for physical contact reaction and directed growth of seed crystal without the nucleation in the synthesis gel.

  • The honeycomb adsorbent was prepared for adsorbing and seadsorbent was prepared by using zeolite sheet, which contained zeolite as component. The steady-state adsorption properties and surface morphologies were analyzed and breakthrough characteristics were ananlyzed by providing 16% carbon dioxide mixed gas. By thermal regeneration, carbon dioxide concentration properties were analyzed, and the adsorptive separation process was compared between thermal swing adsorption and pressure swing adsorption after adsorbent temperature change during heating. The breakthrough results of the honeycomb showed possibility parating carbon dioxide from combustion exhaust gas, which had deep impact on climate change, and the characteristics of the adsorbent were studied. Na-X zeolite was coated on a honeycomb prepared with ceramic sheet or active carbon sheet so that the two honycomb can be used at high temperature. • Freundlich isotherms and Toth isotherms were obtained for benzene adsorption on activated carbon and zeolite 13X in static experiments. Breakthrough curves of benzene were measured in adsorption bed packed with the same adsorbents. Relation between breakthrough times and partial pressure of benzene was analyzed and the Freundlich isotherm parameters were determined. Adsorption amount of benzene predicted by the analysis of breakthrough experimental results was relatively consistent with that predicted by the static experimental results. Dynamic experiments for activated carbon bed, where more symmetric breakthrough curves were obtained, produced smaller errors with zeolite bed.

  • In this study, a biocatalyst composite was prepared by immobilizing oxidoreductases onto Cu-activated zeolite to facilitate biochemical decomposition of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). 4-CP monooxygenase (CphC-I) was cloned from a 4-CP degrading bacterium, Pseudarthrobacter chlorophenolicus A6, and then overexpressed and purified. Type X zeolite was synthesized from non-magnetic coal fly ash using acetic acid treatment, and its surfaces were coated with copper ions via impregnation (Cu-zeolite). Then, the recombinant oxidative and reductive enzymes were immobilized onto Cu-zeolite. The enzymes were effectively immobilized onto the Cu-zeolite (79% of immobilization yield). The retained catalytic activity of CphC-I after immobilization was 0.3423 U/g-Cu-zeolite, which was 63.3% of the value of free enzymes. The results of this study suggest that copper can be used as an effective enzyme immobilization binder because it provides favorable metalhistidine binding between the enzyme and Cu-zeolite.

  • In this study, binderless zeolite BaX granule, an effective adsorbent for the separation of p-xylene was made. This adsorbent which has a sufficient strength, high specific surface area and selectivity to p-xylene was prepared by various steps, such as granulation process, calcination, binderless treatment, ion-exchange, and activation. In the granulation, the concentration of colloidal silica solution was controlled in order to confirm the effect of $SiO_2$ contents after binderless treatment. As a result, we confirmed that the compressive strength of granule after binderless treatment was increasing with increasing proportion of $SiO_2$ in the granule. And then Na-ion in granule was exchanged with Ba-ion by successive batch ion-exchange process. And then prepared adsorbents were tested for p-xylene separation by batch adsorption at $90^{\circ}C$. As a results of batch adsortion test, we confirmed that prepared adsorbents have a high selectivity to p-xylene. Also, it could be conformed that the prepared binderless zeolite BaX has a sufficient compressive strength (0.450 kgf), high specific surface area $(647.57m^2/g)$, high crystallinity (98.5% compared with zeolite NaX powder), and selectivity to p-xylene.

  • The mechanism of hydrothermally synthesizing Na-A zeolite from siliceous mudstone at a $Na_2O/SiO_2$ ratio of 0.6, a $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ 2.0 and a $H_2O/Na_2O$ 119 has been observed by IR, DTA, XRD and SEM. This mudstone is a tertiary periodic sedimentary rock and widely spreads around the Pohang area. In the early hydrothermal synthesis at $80^{\circ}C$ in an autoclave, sodium silicate and sodium aluminate were found to be preferentially reacted to generate Na-A type zeolite. Gibbsite and bayerite were also formed due to the presence of extra aluminum oxide in the feedstock. As reaction time in-creased up to 50 h, residual sodium aluminatewas reacted with siliceous mudstone, causing the Na-A zeolite crystal to grow and the hydroxylsodalite to generate. Therefore, in the $14{\sim}50\;h$ synthetic time, Na-A zeolite and hydroxylsodalite were formed. Also, if reaction time passed over 50 h, a part of the Na-A zeolite was finally redissolved and reacted with hydroxylsodalite to synthesize Na-P zeolite, generating porous surface of Na-A zeolite and disappearing hydroxylsodalite.
