This study was carried out to investigate the effects of seeding dates and cultivated period on the growth characteristics, dry matter yield and feed value of Teosinte new variety "Geukdong 6"[Zea mays L. subsp. mexicana (Schrad.) H. H. Iltis]for feed. The experimental design was arranged in a randomized block design with three replications. Treatments consisted of five time seeding dates, 10 May(T1), 25 May(T2), 10 June(T3), 25 June(T4) and 10 July(T5), and same time harvesting, 22 October. Therefore, growing period were 164 days(T1), 149 days(T2), 134 days(T3), 119 days(T4) and 103 days(T5), respectively. In growth stage at harvest time, T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 were early flowering, end heading, middle heading, early heading and early heading stage, respectively. Plant length and dead leaf were highest in T1, but leaf width and number of leaf were highest in T2 than others (p<0.05). Leaf length, stem diameter and number of tiller were not significantly different among the treatments (p<0.05). Stem hardness was higher in order of T1(2.0)> T2(1.9) > T3=T4(1.7) > T5($1.2kg/cm^2$). Fresh yield and dry matter yield showed significantly higher as the sowing time was faster and the cultivation period was longer (T1 > T2 > T3 > T4 > T5, p<0.05). Crude protein, crude fat and TDN content were highest in T5, but ADF and NDF content were highest in T1 than others (p<0.05). T1, T2 and T3 showed significantly higher crude protein yield compared to T4 and T5 (p<0.05). Total digestible nutrients yield were higher in order of T1 > T2 > T3 > T4 > T5 (p<0.05), and relative feed value were higher in order of T5 > T4 > T3 > T2 > T1 (p<0.05). Based on the above results, seeding dates could be recommended from the early May to the late May, and it is efficient that the cultivation period is over 150 days for dry matter yield, crude protein yield and total digestible nutrients yield.
Laboratory and greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate effects of spray volumes and surfactants, L-77 and Triton CS-7 on leaf retention of glyphosate in Zea mays, Hordeum vulgare, Artemisia princeps, Trifolium repens and Equisetum arvense. Leaf retention was increased when glyphosate with L-77 or Triton CS-7 was applied in a spray volumes of 10-20 l/10a in Zea mays and 40 l/10a in Artemisia princeps but decreased when spray volumes were higher than above volumes and 40-80 l/10a in Trifolium repens. Hordeum vulgare leaves retained more spray when glyphosate with L-77 or Triton CS-7 was applied in all spray volumes tested. Equisetum arvense retained higher amount of spray by application of glyphosate with L-77 compared with Triton CS-7 and no surfactant treatments.
Maize (Zea mays L.) is a C4-plant and one of the three major crops grown worldwide. Because of its high productivity, maize is considered as one of the most important food and feed stocks in the world. Recently, bioethanol from maize was predominantly generated in the USA and Brazil. Infection of maize by several diseases resulted in a huge disaster and prevented maize production. Downy mildew, caused by Peronosclerospora sorghi, is one of the most serious diseases of maize. Despite efforts to develop downy mildew-resistant cultivars or seed treatment with metalaxyl, downy mildew persists as a serious pathogen and is still prevalent in specific geographical locations. Analysis of soils infected with downy mildew and investigation of candidates associated with downy mildew resistance is an attractive method to overcome downy mildew damage in maize. In a previous study, we reported that maize chromosome 6 carries a possible candidate gene for downy mildew resistance. Using bioinformatics tools and RT-PCR analysis, five novel genes including bZIP, OFP transcription factor, and Ppr were identified as candidate genes associated with downy mildew resistance.
Leaf temperature is complicated with the microclimate and the dry matter production in a plant community. But a daily change of leaf temperature varying by the locality in plant body or plant community is not yet clear. To resolve such a question, following experiment was designed; Helianthus tuberosus L., Glycine max L., Zea mays L., Impomoea batatas Lam., and Cucurbita moschata var. toonas Makino were planted in the different sandy loam, $2m{\times}2m-quadrat$, which has a eastern, southern, western and northern edge. In each plot 17-25 plants were planted and the distances between individuals spaced uniformly. And leaf temperature were measured by MR3-C type thermistor from 14th May through 20th August. It is seems that the upper leaf is affected by solar radiation, the lower leaf by released heat from the earth and the middle leaf by the conditions of both zones. Measuring the temperature of a leaf that is on terminal, central, left and right margins and base part, temperature of control plant in a leaf was sloped during about two hours from noon. It is noticeable as a "noon sleeping" phenomenon.henomenon.
Ethanol extracts from 46 plants were tested for their fungicidal activity against six plant diseases consisting of Maynaporthe grisea, Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cinerea, Phytophthora infestans, Puccinia recondita, and Erysiphe graminis in the greenhouse studies. Strong activity at 5 and 10 mg/pot was produced from the extracts of Helianthus annuus flowers and Zea mays leaves against P. grisea. In a test with B. cineara, extracts of H. annuus leaves, H. annuus flowers, Chrysanthmum coronarium var. spatiosum, Cucurbita moschata seeds, Lycopersicon esculentum, Z. mays, and Z. mays leaves had strong activities at 5 mg/pot. In a test with P. recondita, strong activity was obtained from the extracts of Capsicum frutescens, C. moschata seeds, H. annuus seeds, L. esculentum, and Malva veticillata at 5 mg/pot. Against E. graminis, extracts of Cucumis sativus, H. annuus seeds, Salanum tuberosum, Z. mays, and Z. mays leaves produced strong activities at 10 mg/pot. All the extracts were ineffective against P. infestans and R. solani. Among seven extracts tested, the extracts of H. annuus leaves and flowers were highly effective against all the strains of B. cinerea resistant to carbendazim, procymidone, and diethofencarb. Furthermore, potent fungicidal activity was produced from the extracts of C. coronarium var. spatiosum and C. moschata seeds against the SSR, SRR, and RSR strains of B. cinerea, and Z. mays and Z. mays leaves against SSR and RSR. Extract of L. esculentum showed very strong activity only against RRS of B. cinerea.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the capacity of single and combined applications of the bark of the stems and roots of Magnolia officinalis Rehd. et Wils. (Magnoliae Cortex) and Zea mays L. (maize) to modulate inflammation in RAW 264.7 cells stimulated with Porphyromonas gingivalis. Methods: RAW 264.7 cells were stimulated with P. gingivalis, and Magnoliae Cortex and/or maize was added. Cytotoxicity and the capacity to modulate inflammation were determined with a methylthiazol tetrazolium (MTT) assay, nitrite production, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and western blotting. Results: Treatment with Magnoliae Cortex and/or maize inhibited nuclear transcription factor ${\kappa}B$ ($NF-{\kappa}B$) pathway activation and nuclear p44/42 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) protein expression in P. gingivalis-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Moreover, the treatments suppressed cytokines (prostaglandin $E_2$ [$PGE_2$], interleukin $[IL]-1{\beta}$, and IL-6) and nitrite production. Conclusions: Both Magnoliae Cortex and maize exerted an anti-inflammatory effect on P. gingivalis-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells, and this effect was more pronounced when the extracts were combined. These findings show that these extracts may be beneficial for slowing the progression of periodontal disease.
The sclerotium rot of corn (Zea mays L.) occurred sporadically at the experimental field of Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services in July 2011. The infected stems were water-soaked, wilted, and finally led to the death of the whole plants. White mycelial mats were spread over lesions, and then sclerotia were formed on stem and near soil line. The sclerotia were globoid in shape, white to brown in color and 1-3 mm in size. The hyphal width was $4-8{\mu}m$. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth and sclerotia formation on PDA was 30 on PDA. The typical clamp connections were observed in the hyphae of the fungus grown on PDA. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity to host plants, this fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii Saccardo. This is the first report of sclerotium rot on corn caused by S. rolfsii in Korea.
Maize (Zea mays L.) is a monoecious plant, which separates male (tassel) and female (ear) floret that evolved into increasing heterogeneity. In each floret, male or female, bears both one pistil and three stamens primodia before diverged to unisexual state. When diverged to tassel, pistil cell death occurs in the pistil primodium, which is mediated by TASSELSEED genes. In contrast, cell protection occurs in the ear pistil from TASSELSEED-mediated cell death, which is mediated by SILKLESS1 gene. On the other hand, cell cycle arrest occurred for a long time in the ear stamens and then the stamens eventually dye. The cell cycle regulating genes such as CYCLIN B and WEE1 are involved in this process. Furthermore, the temporal and spatial regulation of gibberellin biosynthesis may cause cell cycle block in arresting stamen cells. This review describes the cell death, cell protection, and cell cycle arrest mechanism during maize sex determination process at the molecular, cellular and developmental biology, and genetic levels.
In this study, the origin of the monovinyl chlorophyll a carboxylic biosynthetic route was investigated in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and com (Zea mays L.). Protoporphyrin IX accumulated in vivo or in vitro was found to be all of the divinyl form. Furthermore, the conversion of divinyl protoporphyrin IX to monovinyl protoporphyrin IX in vitro was not observed. In contrast, the biosynthesis and accumulation of monovinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX and its methyl ester occurred in etiolated leaves and divinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX was convertible to monovinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX in vitro. These results suggest that the monovinyl chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ carboxylic biosynthetic route in plants may originate from the divinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX pool.
