  • Permeable reactive barriers containing Zero-valent iron (ZVI) are used to purify ground-water contaminants. One of the representative contaminant is trichloroethylene (TCE). ZVI can act as a reducing agent of TCE. When ZVI is oxidized to Ferric iron, TCE reduced to Ethene, which is non-harmful matter. As a ZVI becomes ferric iron, the reducing effect decreases and iron becomes unavailable. So, constant reduction of TCE requires the regular supply of reducing agent. So, we use Iron-reducing bacteria(IRB) to extend the TCE degrading ability. We perform three experiment DI water, DI water with medium, and DI water with medium and IRB. By the experiment we try to found the dissolve ability.

  • Dicamba(3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid) is used to control for pre and post-emergence of annual and perennial broad-leaf weeds. It is very soluble in water and highly mobile, acidic herbicide. So it is easily moved and detected in groundwater. Zerovalent iron(ZVI) has been used for the reductive degradation of certain compounds through amination of nitro-substituted compounds and dechlorination of chloro-substituted compounds. In this study, we investigated the potential of ZVI for the oxidative degradation of dicamba in water. The degradation rate of dicamba by ZVI was more rapidly increased in pH 3.0 than pH 5.0 solution. The degradation percentage of dicamba was increased with increasing amount of ZVI from 0.05% to 1.0%(w/v) and reached above 90% within 3 hours of reaction. As a result of identification by GC-MS after derivatization with diazomethane, we obtained three degradation products of dicamba by ZVI. They were identified 4-hydroxy dicamba or 5-hydroxy dicamba, 4,5-dihydroxy dicamba and 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxyphenol. 4-Hydroxy dicamba or 5-hydroxy dicamba and 4,5-dihydroxy dicamba are hydroxylation products of dicamba. 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxyphenol is hydroxyl group substituted compound instead of carboxyl group in dicamba. We also confirmed the same degradation products of dicamba in the Fenton reaction which is one of oxidation processes using ferric sulfate and hydrogen peroxide. But we could not find out the dechlorinated degradation products of dicamba by ZVI.

  • Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs) using zero valent iron (ZVI, $Fe^0$) is a promising technology for in-situ remediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) forming dense non aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL). The objective of this study is to develop an enhanced treatment method of trichloroethylene-contaminated groundwater using ZVI packed bed with direct current (D.C.). A column experiment was performed to investigate degradation efficiency of TCE that was performed in three different combination of control (only sand), ZVI column (ZVI:sand, packing ratio 1:2(v/v)) and bipolar column (ZVI:sand=1:2(v/v) with electric current) in the test columns. As the results of this study, the degradation efficiency of TCE was improved with simultaneous application of both bipolar column compared to that used ZVI column. Because ZVI particles are isolated and individual particles act like small electrodes. In this experiment, it was indicated a basic material for application of bipolar packed bed as electro-PRBs that was effective degradation of TCE.

  • In order to treat groundwater containing high levels of nitrate, nitrate reduction by nano sized zero-valent iron (nZVI) was studied using batch experiments. Compared to nitrate removal efficiencies at different mass ratios of $nitrate/Fe^0$, the removal efficiency at the mass ratio of 0.02% was the highest(54.59%). To enhance nitrate removal efficiency, surface modification of nZVI was performed using metallic catalysis such as Pd, Ni and Cu. Nitrate removal efficiency by Cu-nZVI (at $catalyst/Fe^0$ mass ratio of 0.1%) was 66.34%. It showed that the removal efficiency of Cu-nZVI was greater than that of the other catalysts. The observed rate constant ($k_{obs}$) of nitrate reduction by Cu-nZVI was estimated to $0.7501min^{-1}$ at the Cu/Fe mass ratio of 0.1%. On the other hand, TEM images showed that the average particle sizes of synthetic nZVI and Cu-nZVI were 40~60 and 80~100 nm, respectively. The results imply that catalyst effects may be more important than particle size effects in the enhancement of nitrate reduction by nZVI.

  • The dechlorination of endosulfan (6,7,8,9,10,10-hexachloro-1,5,5a,6,9,9a-hexahydro-6,9-methano-2,4,3-benzodioxathiepine-3-oxide) and its metabolite, endosulfan sulfate via reaction with zerovalent iron under various pH conditions was studied using aqueous solution. The reaction products, which were probably produced from endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate by ZVI were identified by GC-MS. The lower the pH of reaction solution, the higher the transformation rate of endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate. The transformation rates of endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate in pH 3.0 by ZVI were 28% and 90% but those of endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate in mixture solution of water/acetone were 65% and 92%, respectively. The pH of reaction solution after ZVI treatment was increased to pH 10. Endosulfan was hydrolyzed at pH 10 but endosulfan sulfate was not hydrolyzed. Two unknown peaks were produced from endosulfan sulfate by treatment of ZVI. As a result of GC-MS analysis, unknown peaks were guessed to be structural isomer substituted hydrogen for chlorine.

  • In this study, the effect of sintering temperature and zero valent iron (ZVI) content on the physical properties of functional ceramic filter(alumina based materials) such as strength and porosity were investigated. The fabrication process of the functional ceramic filter were performed under various sintering temperature ($1150^{\circ}C$, $1250^{\circ}C$) and ZVI content (10, 20, 30, 50%) conditions. With increasing the sintering temperature and ZVI content, strength was increased but porosity was decreased. The physical properties for functional ceramic filter showed that the strength and porosity were obtained under ZVI content (50%) and sintering temperature ($1250^{\circ}C$) of 99.01 MPa and 34.5%, respectively.

  • A persulfate(PS)/sulfidated microscale zero-valent iron(S-mZVI) system was tested for treating a soil contaminated with phenol. Sulfidation of bare mZVI was conducted using a mechanochemical process utilizing a ball mill in order to improve persulfate activation capacity and stability of unmodified mZVI. The synthesized S-mZVI performed markedly better than the bare mZVI in activating PS. The optimum molar ratio of sulfur to mZVI was around 0.12. In the soil slurry experiments, a very rapid and complete removal of phenol was observed at the optimum molar ratios of PS to S-mZVI of 2:1 and PS to phenol of 16:1. The phenol removal efficiencies decreased as the water content of the slurries decreased. This was believed to be due to increased soil oxidant demand as the amount of soil was increased as relative to the water content. To evaluate the field applicability of the process, slurry experiments adopting high soil contents were carried out that simulated in-situ soil mixing conditions. These experiments resulted in substantially compromised degradation efficiencies of 54.3% and 43.8% within 4 hours. The current study generally shows that the PS/S-mZVI process has a potential to be developed into a remediation technology for soils contaminated with organics.

  • A method for degradation of the perchlorate anion ($ClO{_4}^-$) has been studied using electrochemically generated zero-valent iron (ZVI) deposited on a porous carbon electrode. The first strategy of this study is to produce the ZVI via the electrochemical reduction of iron (II) on a porous carbon electrode coated with a conducting polymer, instead of employing expensive $NaBH_4$. The present method produced well distributed ZVI on conducting polymer (polypyrrole thin film) and increased surface area. ZVI surface can be regenerated easily for successive reduction. The second strategy is to apply a mild reducing condition (-0.3 V) to enhance the efficiency of the degradation of perchlorate with ZVI without the evolution of hydrogen. The electrochemically generated ZVI nanoparticles may offer an alternative means for the complete destruction perchlorate without evolution of hydrogen in water with high efficiency and at low cost.

  • Trichloroethylene(TCE), Cr(VI), and nitrate removal efficiency of a novel reactive barrier were experimented, and the types of corrosion species that form on the surface of the iron and bentonite as a result of reaction were investigated with Raman spectrophotometer. The reactive barrier is composed of bentonite and zero valent iron(ZVI), and this can substitute conventional geosynthetic clay liners for landfill leachate. Tests were performed in batch reactors for various ZVI content (0, 3, 6, 10, 13, 16, 20, 30, 100 w/w %) and pH. The reduction rates and removal efficiencies of TCE, Cr(VI) and nitrate increase at pH 7 buffered solution. As ZVI content increases, TCE, Cr(VI) and nitrate removal efficiencies increase. From the result of analysis with Raman spectrophotometer, Fe-oxides were observed, which are strong adsorbers of cantaminants. Magnetite can be also beneficial to the long term performance of the iron metal.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate mineral precipitates, which derived from the zero valent iron (ZVI) corrosion during TCE dechlorination and to find the controlling factors in mineral precipitates. A series of column experiemnts were conducted to evaluate the location of ZVI and the effects of electrode arrangements in electro-enhanced permeable reactive barrier (E2PRB) systems. Based on mineralogical study, ZVI samples near the influent port had more lepidocrocite, ferrihydrite or Fe (oxy)hydroxide, and (phospho)siderite while backward samples had more akaganeite, magnetite/maghemite, and intermediate green rust (GR) I and GR II. A suite of mineral distribution was preferabley related to the dissolved oxygen and the increased pH. Controlling factors of mineral precipitates in an E2PRB system were found to be (1) pH, (2) dissolved oxygen, (3) the types of Fe intermediates, and (4) anionic species to form complex strongly.
