  • The stochastic properties of variation in fatigue crack growth are important in reliability and stability of structures. In this study, the stochastic model for the variation of fatigue crack growth rate was proposed in consideration of nonhomogeneity of materials. For this model, experiments were ocnducted on 7075-T6 aluminum alloy under the constant stress intensity factor range. The variation of fatigue crack growth rate was expressed by random variables Z and r based on the variation of material coefficients C and m in the paris-Erodogan's equation. The distribution of fatigue life with respect to the stress intensity factor range was evaluated by the stochastic Markov chain model based on the Paris-Erdogan's equation. The merit of proposed model is that only a small number of test are required to determine this this function, and fatigue crack growth life is easily predicted at the given stress intensity factor range.

  • Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play an important role in host defense by sensing invading microbial pathogens and initiating innate immune responses. The stimulation of TLRs by microbial components triggers the activation of myeloid differential factor 88 (MyD88)- and toll-interleukin-1 receptor domain-containing adapter inducing interferon-${\beta}$ (TRIF)-dependent downstream signaling pathways. Isoliquiritigenin (ILG), an active ingredient of Licorice, has been used for centuries to treat many chronic diseases. ILG inhibits the MyD88-dependent pathway by inhibiting the activity of inhibitor-${\kappa}B$ kinase. However, it is not known whether ILG inhibits the TRIF-dependent pathway. To evaluate the therapeutic potential of ILG, we examined its effect on signal transduction via the TRIF-dependent pathway of TLRs induced by several agonists. ILG inhibited nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$ and interferon regulatory factor 3 activation induced by lipopolysaccharide or polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid. ILG inhibited the lipopolysaccharide-induced phosphorylation of interferon regulatory factor 3 as well as interferon-inducible genes such as interferon inducible protein-10, and regulated activation of normal T-cell expressed and secreted (RANTES). These results suggest that ILG can modulate TRIF-dependent signaling pathways of TLRs, leading to decreased inflammatory gene expression.

The temperature coefficient of resonant frequency(TC $F_{r}$) abruptly change at the morphotropic phase boundary(MPB) which existed between the rhombohedral phase with highly negative TC $F_{r}$ of -106ppm/$^{\circ}C$ and the tetragonal phase with highly positive TC $F_{r}$ of +64pp $m^{\circ}C$ as Zr/Ti ratio varied from 50/50 to 49.5/50.5.50.5..50.5.

  • This paper provides a numerical solution for multiple confocal elliptic dissimilar cylinders. In the problem, the inner elliptic notch is under the traction free condition. The medium is composed of many confocal elliptic dissimilar cylinders. The transfer matrix method is used to study the continuity condition for the stress and displacement along the interfaces. Two cases, or the infinite matrix case and the finite matrix case, are studied in this paper. In the former case, the remote tension is applied in y- direction. In the latter case, the normal loading is applied along the exterior elliptic contour. For two cases, several numerical results are provided.

  • This paper provides a complex variable BIE for solving the periodic notch problems in plane plasticity. There is no limitation for the configuration of notches. For the periodic notch problem, the remainder estimation technique is suggested. In the technique, the influences on the central notch from many neighboring notches are evaluated exactly. The influences on the central notch from many remote notches are approximated by one term with a multiplying factor. This technique provides an effective way to solve the problems of periodic structures. Several numerical examples are presented, and most of them have not been reported previously.

  • In this paper, we discuss a 3-dimensional localization sensor node using EM waves (Electromagnetic waves) with RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator). Generally EM waves cannot be used in underwater environment, because the signal is highly attenuated by the water medium according to the distance. Although the signal quickly reduces in underwater, the reducing tendency is very clear and uniform. Hence EM waves have possibility as underwater distance sensors. The authors have verified the possibility by theory and several experiments, and developed calibration methods in case of linear and planer environment. For 3-dimensional localization in underwater, it must be known antenna's radiation pattern property in electric plane(called E-plane). In this paper, we proceed experiments to verify attenuation tendency with z axis movement, PLF (Polarization Loss Factor) and ILF (Inclination Loss Factor) with its theoretical approach.

  • The effect of calcining temperature on planar coupling factor Kp resonance and antiresonance frequency of $Pb(Z_{0.53}Ti_{0.47})O_3$ doped with $Nb_2O_5$ has been investigated. The calcining temperature ranged from $700^{\circ}C$ to 110$0^{\circ}C$ The calcining temperature affected on antiresonance frequency more strongly than the resonance frequency. Therefore the Kp was almost entirely dependent upon the antiresonance frequency. The p and antiresonance frequency of the sample in creased with the calcining temperature reaching a maximum at about 90$0^{\circ}C$ When a poling electric field of 35KV/cm was applied to the sample calcined at 90$0^{\circ}C$ and sintered for two hours at 120$0^{\circ}C$ Kp attained a maximum value of 0.64 which is in good agreement with the results of other investigators.

  • Form-ratio means the ratio of height/Width/Depth in 3-dimensions. The golden ratio or golden section is included as one of the form-ratio. We conducted two kinds of kansei experiments of cubic model and refrigerator varied from 1:1:1 to 1:1:3.66 on the scale of x:y:z. The subjects evaluate the form-ratios of 3-dimensional cubes and virtual products with SD-scale Kansei words(feelings and images). We applied the factor analysis to identify semantic space in cube model and virtual products. Finally, we compared with kansei structure of cube model and virtual product.
