  • Bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet(Bi-YIG; $Bi_xY_{3-x}Fe_5O_{12}$, x=0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0) thin films were fabricated on glass substrates using a metal organic decomposition (MOD) method. The dielectric property was measured by NSMM(Near-field scanning microwave microscopy) system that operating frequency is 4 Ghz. The obtained reflection coefficient $S_{11}$ of the Bi:YIG thin films with different bismuth concentration was increased as the bismuth concentration increased due to the lattice mismatch and vacancy of ions because of a lager ionic radius of bismuth ion than yttrium ion.

  • We investigated a solution-driven Yttrium Tin Oxide (YSnO) film that was imprinted using a parallel nanostructure as a liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer. The imprinting process was conducted at the annealing temperature of 100℃. To evaluate the effect of this process, we conducted surface analyses including atomic force microscopy (AFM). During imprinting, the surface roughness was reduced, and anisotropic characteristics were observed. Planar LC alignment was observed at a pretilt angle of 0.22° on YSnO film. Surface anisotropy induced by imprinting method forces LC to align along the direction of the parallel nanostructure, which is an alternative to conventional polyimide treated using a rubbing process.

  • The applicability of shaped growth of yttrium orthovanadate was approved by successful growth of rod-like single crystals with the rectangular shape. Nd-doped single crystals with content of $Nd^{3+}$ ions of 1,2,3,5 atomic % in the starting melt were grown by the EFG technique with the size up to $10^{*}10mm$ in section and up to 85 mm in length. For the testing of the multiple growth of the orthovanadates, two and three Nd-and Yb-doped $YVO_{4}$ single crystals were grown by the EFG technique simultaneously up to 110 mm in length.

  • ${\beta}$-silicon carbides with yttrium aluminum garnet of 2,5,10 mol% were prepared by a liquid--phase sint-ering and the microstructural evolution and phase transformation were investigated during sintering as functions of liquid-phase amount and sintering time. The rate of grain growth decreases with the addition of the amount of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) in the SiC starting powder however the apparent density and the aspect ratio of grains in sintered body increase. The phase transformation from ${\beta}$-SiC to ${\alpha}$-SiC were dependent on the liquid-phase amount and sintering time.

  • $Y(OH)_3$ nanowires were synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction of metallic Y with aqueous solution of LiOH. The morphology and the size of the nanowires changed with varying the volume of the LiOH solution inside the autoclave. $Y(OH)_3$ nanowires transformed to $Y_2O_3$ by a subsequent heat-treatment without morphological change. By a proper control of hydrothermal reaction parameter and heat-treatment, the yield of pure $Y_2O_3$ nanowires up to 97% was attained.
