  • In the green house, the effect of the mixed material of vermicast and humic acid on the growth of young raddish was investigated. 5, 10, 15, 30 or 50 kg(a.i.) of solid type humic acid was mixed with 300kg(d.w.) of vermicast/10a, each of which was applicated to the soil. And the conventional treatment(600kg of conventional organic fertilizer/10a) and untreatment plot were rendered for comparison. In all the experimental plots treated with vermicast, the number of leaves, leaf length, leaf biomass, root length, root diameter, root biomass of young raddish were higher than those in untreated plot. And in the experimental plots treated with the mixed materials of vermicast and humic acid, growth rate of young raddish was equal to or higher than that in the conventionally treated plot. Fresh biomass of leaves per leol' raddish in the plot treated with 300kg of vermicast + 5kg of humic acid was 1.79 times higher than that in the untreated plot and fresh biomass of root was 2.08 times higher, which was much more effective in its growth rate than that in any other treated plots. There were no prominent changes in soil physicochemical properties after the leol' raddish harvest from the soil treated with vermicast and humic acid, though.

Influence of application of nitrogen and phosphorus on the uptake of $^{90}Sr$ by raddish and chinese cabbage (질소(窒素)와 인산시용(燐酸施用)에 따른 무우 및 배추의 $^{90}Sr$ 흡수(吸收) 영향(影響))

  • The influence of phosphorus and nitrogen application on the uptake of radioactive strontium by Chinese cabbage and raddish was studied in pot experiments. The dry matter yield of Chinese cabbage and raddish increased with the application of phosphorus and nitrogen. High yield of raddish was obtained by the additions of nitrate while Chinese cabbage was obtained by the ammonium. The content of potassium in the vegetables was enhanced by the application of phosphorus. and the calcium content increased with the application of nitrogen. The content of $^{90}Sr$ was higher in the raddish than in the Chinese cabbage while the $^{90}Sr$ activity in the dry matter of vegetables decreased considerably with the application of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizer. This indicates that the suppression of uptake was more effective with the application of nitrate than with ammonium.

  • The enzymatic properties of ${\beta}-amylase$ from soybean and sweet potato were compared. The sweet potato enzyme consists of four identical subsunits whereas soybean enzyme has no subunit $structure^{12,\;15)}$. In the denatured state, both enzymes exhibited the same molecular weight on SDS-gel electrophoresis and on gel-filtration analysis. The spectra of circular dichroism revealed that both enzyme have almost same secondary structure but the environment of aromatic side chains are different. The chemical cleavage of soybean and sweet potato ${\beta}-amylases$ at cysteine residues and methionine residues demonstrated the homology of amino acid sequence between the enzymes. The similarity between soybean and sweet potato ${\beta}-amylase$ was also revealed by immunological method. The antibody for soybean enzyme inhibited the activity of sweet potato enzyme but it did not inhibit the activity of wheat, barley and Japanese-raddish ${\beta}-amylases$.

  • This study was undertaken to evaluate the potassium consumption and excretion in forty healthy male workers of a tire company in Seoul. Mean postassium intake for three days in the subject was $54.5\pm16.7mEq/day(2.13\pm0.64g)$ and urinary excretion of potassium in 24 hours was $45.9\pm10.5mEq(1.77\pm0.41g)$. Thus 83% of dietary potassium was excreted in the form of urine. Dietary ratio of Na to K was $4.15\pm0.58$ while urinary ratio of Na to K was $5.20\pm1.11$. The main food source of potassium was cooked rice with soybean in the rice group, potato with soybean paste soup in the part of soup group. and seasoned Spanish mackerel with raddish in the side dish group. There was a strong correlation between dietary protein and dietary potassium(r=0.694, p<0.001). Urinary sodium and potassium were also strongly associated with each other(r=0.647, p<0.001).
