Structure of the skin in amphibious fish, Periophthalmus modestus, was described in relation to cutaneous respiration. The epidermis has no gland cell. The epidermis consists of three regions: outermost layer of one to five layers of flattened epithelial cells, middle layer of swollen epithelial cells instead of glandular cells and stratum germinativum of cuboidal cells. There are numerous blood capillaries in the outermost layer of the epidermis and diffusion distance between the blood of capillaries and the epidermis is about 1.4 Um. The middle layer of the epidermis appears to be a web-like structure due to the swollen epithelial cells. The stratum germinativum has a well-developed lymphatic space containing lymphocytes. There are numerous blood capillaries and elliptical area with acid mucopolysaccharides in stratum laxum of the dermis. The skin of Periophthalmus modestus may be an accessory respiratory organ for oxygen uptake during terrestrial or aquatic life.

The purpose of this study is to examine whether the efflux system for taurine from brain to blood is present on the blood-brain barrier (BBB) using the brain efflux index (BEl) method and taurine transport system is regulated by CNS cell damage with oxidative stress agent such as diethyl maleate (DEM) or tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ (TNF-${\alpha}$) in vivo. [$^3$H]Taurine was microinjected into parietal cortex area 2 (Par2) of the rat brain, and was eliminated from the brain with efflux transport rate of 1.22 10$\^$-2//min, and the process is saturable with a $K_{m}$ of 43.5 ${\mu}$M. Objectives : This study was designed to establish the basis for expanding the indications for Blood-letting therapy by reviewing the contents recorded in the Zhenjiudacheng. Methods : Articles associated with the Blood-letting therapy were categorized according to the factors such as the characteristics of the treatment site, the used instruments, the caution, the side effects, the diseases, the acupoints, etc. Results : 1. The characteristics of treatment site were the red, purple, purplish red, purplish black color and the localized collection of fibrous exudate. 2. There were several instruments used for Blood-letting therapy; Samreongchim, Sochim, Loguan, Stone needle, Jukyeop, etc. 3. Several cautions and side effects of the Blood-letting therapy were recorded in the Zhenjiudacheng. 4. The Blood-letting therapy could be performed for a broad spectrum of symptoms such as headaches, backaches, schizophrenia, hyperemia, etc. 5. Not only acupoints but also extra points were used for blood-Letting therapy. 6. In addition to the usual Blood-letting region, Blood-letting therapy was performed directly on the pathologic site and pathologic reaction site. Conclusions : In the Zhenjiudacheng, Blood-letting therapy was described in a concrete and substantive manner in order to enable practical clinical application.
Smoking of tobacco cigarettes is associated with a rise in blood pressure together with increase in heart rate. This study was aimed to examine the acute effect of tobacco and non-tobacco cigarette smoking on the blood pressure and heart rate by randomized crossover study. In the results, systolic/diastolic blood pressure and heart rate changes after smoking were significantly different between male and female group. Blood pressure and heart rate were elevated after smoking, but statistical significance for the difference was identified only in the female group. Because Non-tobacco smoke made from leaves of E. ulmoides has no nicotine, its effect on blood pressure and heart rate was negligible. Remarkable difference of heart rate changes in women was observed between tobacco cigarette smoking group and non-tobacco cigarette smoking group.
SAENGMAEGSAN(SMS) has been used in oriental medicine for many years as a therapeutic agent for cerebral disease. The effect of SMS on the vascular system is not known. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of SMS on blood pressure, regio-nal cerebral blood flow(rCBF). 1. Blood pressure did not change by SMS in rats. 2. rCBF was increased by SMS in a dose-dependent manner. 3. Pretreatment with propranolol. methylene blue and indomethacin significantly inhibited SMS induced increase in rCBF. These results suggest that SMS causes a diverse response of blood pressure, regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and pial arterial diameter. The increase in rCBF is also mediated by prostaglandins. cyclic GMP and adrenergic ${\beta}$receptor.
$C1q/TNF-{\alpha}-Related$ Protein 1 (CTRP1) has recently been shown to act as a blood pressure regulator, as it induces vasoconstriction. In the aorta, CTRP1 facilitates recruitment of angiotensin II receptor 1 (AT1R) to plasma membrane, through activation of the AKT/AS160 signaling pathway. This leads to activation of the Ras homolog gene family (Rho)/Rho kinase (ROCK) signaling pathway, resulting in vasoconstriction. Accordingly, mice overexpressing Ctrp1 have hypertensive phenotype. Patients with hypertension also display higher circulating CTRP1 levels, compared to healthy individuals, indicating that excessive CTRP1 may affect development of hypertension. Conversely, CTRP1 is regarded as an 'innate blood pressure modulator' because CTRP1 increases blood pressure under dehydration to prevent hypotension. Mice lacking Ctrp1 fail to maintain normotension under dehydration conditions, resulting in hypotension, suggesting that CTRP1 is an essential protein for maintaining blood pressure homeostasis. In conclusion, CTRP1 is a novel, anti-hypotensive vasoconstrictor that increases blood pressure during dehydration-induced hypotension.
The purpose of this study is to find the tracking of blood pressure in primary school-age children. A follow-up study was conducted from 1986 to 1990 on 330 first grade children attending primary schools in Kangwha County, Kyungki-Do. Basically we employed a linear regression model with random coefficients to figure out the relation between blood pressure changes and initial blood pressure. We obtained the following results ; 1. The mean blood pressures were increased grade went up in both sexs and were generally higher in female than male except for the systolic blood pressure at first grade. The size of difference was about 0.8 mmHg in mean systolic blood pressure and 1.5 mmHg in mean diastolic blood pressure. 2. The average annual increasing rates of systolic blood pressure were 2.5 mmHg in male and 3.1 mmHg in female respectively. For the diastolic blood pressure IV the average annual increasing rates were observed to be 3.0 mmHg in male and 2.9 mmHg in female respectively. Increasing rate of systolic blood pressure was significantly higher in female than male. 3. The adjusted regression coefficient of systolic blood pressure change on initial value was -0.11 in male and -0.13 in female and that coefficient of diastolic blood pressure change on initial value was -0.01 in male and -0.11 in female. This result shows that children with higher initial blood pressure do not pick up their blood pressure faster than others with lower initial blood pressure. There is no evidence of tracking of blood pressure in children. It is essential to find the earliest age having the tracking of blood pressure and we leave it for the further study.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing in intention and execution of blood donation among nursing college students. Methods: A total of 241 nursing students in D city participated in this cross-sectional study. Participants completed a questionnaire regarding intention, execution, knowledge, and motivation of and attitude toward blood donation. Data were analyzed with t-tests, $x^2$ test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and linear and logistic regression. Results: There were significant correlations among intention and motivation of blood donation attitudes toward donation, and altruism. The results of regression analyses, intention of blood donation ($R^2=.14$) was significantly associated with motivation. In addition, execution of blood donation was significantly associated with knowledge (Odds Ratio [OR]=2.24, 95% CI 1.13~4.44, p=.021), motivation (OR=2.25, 95% CI 1.03~4.88, p=.041), and intention (OR=2.41, 95% CI 1.20~4.84, p=.013) of blood donation. Conclusion: Therefore, the knowledge, motivation, and intention of blood donation should be considered to encourage blood donation programs for college students.
Objectives: This study was to investigate the effect of moxibustion on peripheral blood flow by Doppler ultrasound in post-stroke hemiplegia patients. Methods: Moxibustion was applied on the points of LI4, TE3, TE5 and LI11 on the affected side, and blood flow of the radial artery was measured using the Minimax-Doppler-K device. Blood flow velocity and pulsation index were analyzed before, during, and after moxibustion. Results: The mean value of blood flow velocity in 13 patients showed a tendency of increase during moxibustion, but there was no significant difference in blood flow velocity before and after moxibustion, or pulsation index during and after moxibustion. In addition, among the five patients who showed marked increase tendency on the blood velocity graph, there was significant increase in blood velocity during, and after moxibustion compared with before moxibustion. Conclusions: This study suggests that moxibustion has an effect on peripheral blood flow in stroke patients with hemiplegia. Further validity tests with a larger scale sample are needed for the evidence of its practical use.
