Erosion in a watershed is one of the main sources of sediment inflow in dams. While sediment management practices can be performed to reduce and manage sedimentation in reservoirs, managing the sediment inflow before it reaches the reservoir should also be consider. The accurate location of areas with high erosion and deposition rates should be determined in order to propose an appropriate sediment management procedure such as the construction of check dams. In this study, the projected rainfall from HadGEMRA-3 for RCP 8.5, was used in C-SEM, a distributed rainfall-erosion model, to determine the projected spatial erosion patterns in Cheoncheon catchment, which is located in the upstream part of Yongdam Dam.
In this study, a methodology was devised to overcome that difficulty for thermal stratification modeling using EFDC. For the increase of reproductability for thermal stratification analysis, the effect of parameter such as distribution of solar radiation, depth of active bed temperature layer, heat transfer coefficients were analyzed. The simulation period was from June to December in 2005 and statistical index is used to analyze the model results. The results showed that distribution of solar radiation is zero and depth of active bed temperature layer is 10 m are suitable for simulation of thermal stratification in Yongdam Dam reservoir. This study results can be used for guideline to analyze the thermal stratification of large dam reservoir in Korea.
In this study, temperature, turbidity, suspended paniculate matter (SPM) distribution and mineral characteristics were investigated to explain spatial distribution of the turbid-water environment of Yongdam reservoir in July, 2005. Six stations were selected along a longitudinal axis of the reservoir and sampling was conducted in four depths of each station. Water temperature was showed the typical stratified structure by the effects of irradiance and inflow. Content of inorganic matter in suspended particles increased with the concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) due to the reduction of ash-free dry matter (AFDM). Turbidity ranged from 0.6 to 95.1 NTU and the maximum turbidity value of each station sharply increased toward downstream from upstream. The high turbidity layers were located at the depth between 12~16 m. Particle size ranged from 0.435 to $482.9{\mu}m$. day and silt-sized particles corresponded 91.9~98.9% and 1.1~8.0% in total numbers of SPM, respectively. Turbidity showed high correlations with clay (r=0.763, p<0.05) and silt content (r=0.870, p<0.05).Inorganic matter content (r=0.960, p<0.01) was more correlated with turbidity than organic matter (r=0.823, p<0.05). Mineral characterization using x-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalyzer demonstrated that the major minerals contained in the SPM were kaolinite, illite, vermiculite and smectite. As results of this study, surface water discharge as well as small size of the SPM were suggested as long-term interfering factors in settling down the turbid water in the reservoir.
In general, the upstream dam changes downstream flow regime dramatically, i.e., from natural flow regime to hydropeaking flows. This study investigates the impact of the natural flow pattern on downstream fish habitat in a regulated river in Korea using the physical habitat simulation. The study area is a 13.4 km long reach of the Geum-gang River, located downstream from the Yongdam Dam, Korea. A field monitoring revealed that three fish species are dominant, namely Zacco platypus, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, and Opsariichthys bidens, and they account for 70% of the total fish community. Specially, Opsariichthys bidens is an indigenous species in the Geum-gang River. The three fish species are selected as target fish species for the physical habitat simulation. The Nays2D model, a 2D shallow water equation solver, and the HSI (Habitat Suitability Index) model are used for hydraulic and habitat simulations, respectively. To assess the impact of the natural flow pattern, this study uses the annual natural flow regime and hydropeaking flows from the dam. It is found that the natural flow regime increases significantly the Composite Suitability Index (CSI) in the study reach. Then, using the Building Block Approach (BBA), the scenarios for the modifying dam operations are presented in the study reach. Both Scenario 1 and scenario 2 are proposed by using the hydrological method considering both magnitude and duration of the inflow and averaging the inflow over each month, respectively. It is revealed that the natural flow regime embodied in scenario 1 and scenario 2 increases the Weighted Usable Area (WUA) significantly, compared to the hydropeaking flows. In conclusion, the modifying the dam operations by restoring to the natural flow pattern is advantageous to fish community.

This study performed the dam watershed storm runoff modeling using GPM(Global Precipitation Measurement) satellite rain and KIMSTORM2(KIneMatic wave STOrm Runoff Model 2) distributed model. For YongdamDam watershed(930㎢), three heavy rain events of 25th August 2014, 11th September 2017, and 26th June 2018 were selected and tested for 4 cases of spatial rainfalls such as (a) Kriging interpolated data using ground observed data at 7 stations, (b) original GPM data, (c) GPM corrected by CM(Conditional Merging), and GPM corrected by GDA(Geographical Differential Analysis). For the 4 kinds of data(Kriging, GPM, CM-GPM, and GDA-GPM), the KIMSTORM2 was calibrated respectively using the observed flood discharges at 3 water level gauge stations(Cheoncheon, Donghyang, and Yongdam) with parameters of initial soil moisture contents, stream Manning's roughness coefficient, and effective hydraulic conductivity. The total average Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency(NSE) for the 3 events and 3 stations was 0.94, 0.90, 0.94, and 0.94, determination coefficient(R2) was 0.96, 0.92, 0.97 and 0.96, the volume conservation index(VCI) was 1.03, 1.01, 1.03 and 1.02 for Kriging, GPM, CM-GPM, and GDA-GPM applications respectively. The CM-GPM and GDA-GPM showed better results than the original GPM application for peak runoff and runoff volume simulations, and they improved NSE, R2, and VCI results.
In this study, a real-time storage level and capacity monitoring and forecasting system for Yongdam Dam watershed was developed using high resolution satellite image. The drought indices such as Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) from satellite data were used for storage level monitoring in case of drought. Moreover, to predict storage volume we used a statistical method based on Principle Component Analysis (PCA) of Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA). According to this study, correlation coefficient between storage level and SPI (3) was highly calculated with CC=0.78, and the monitoring and predictability of storage level was diagnosed using the drought index calculated from satellite data. As a result of analysis of principal component analysis by SSA, correlation between SPI (3) and each Reconstructed Components (RCs) data were highly correlated with CC=0.87 to 0.99. And also, the correlations of RC data with Normalized Water Surface Level (N-W.S.L.) were confirmed that has highly correlated with CC=0.83 to 0.97. In terms of high resolution satellite image we developed a water detection algorithm by applying an exponential method to monitor the change of storage level by using Multi-Spectral Instrument (MSI) sensor of Sentinel-2 satellite. The materials of satellite image for water surface area detection in Yongdam dam watershed was considered from 2016 to 2018, respectively. Based on this, we proposed the possibility of real-time drought monitoring system using high resolution water surface area detection by Sentinel-2 satellite image. The results of this study can be applied to estimate of the reservoir volume calculated from various satellite observations, which can be used for monitoring and estimating hydrological droughts in an unmeasured area.

The purpose of this paper is to build a spatio-temporal evapotranspiration(ET) estimation model using Terra MODIS satellite image and by calibrating with the flux tower ET data from watershed. The fundamentals of spatial ET model, Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land(SEBAL) was adopted and modified to estimate the daily ET of Yongdam Dam watershed in South Korea. The daily Normalized Distribution Vegetation Index(NDVI), Albedo, and Land Surface Temperature(LST) from MODIS and the ground measured wind speed and solar radiation data were prepared for 2 years(2012-2013). The SEBAL was calibrated with the forest ET measured by Deokyusan flux tower in the study watershed. Among the model parameters, the important parameters were surface albedo, NDVI and surface roughness in order for momentum transport during calculation of sensible heat flux. As a result of the final calibration, the monthly averaged albedo and NDVI were used because the daily values showed big deviation with unrealistic change. The determination coefficient($R^2$) between SEBAL and flux data was 0.45. The spatial ET reflected the geographical characteristics showing the ET of lowland areas was higher than the highland ET.

An integration study of watershed model(HSPF, Hydological Simulation program-Fortran) and reservoir water quality model (CE-QUAL-W2) was performed for the evaluation of turbid water management in Yongdam reservoir. The watershed model was calibrated and analyzed for flow and suspended solid concentration variation during rainy period, their results were inputted for reservoir water quality model as time-variable water temperature and turbidity. Results of the watershed model showed a good agreement with the field measurements of flow and suspended solid. Also, results of the reservoir water quality model showed a good agreement with the filed measurements of water balance, water temperature and turbidity using linkage of the watershed model results. Integration of watershed and reservoir model is an important in turbid water management because flow and turbidity in stream and high turbidity layer in reservoir could be predicted and analyzed. In this study, the integration of HSPF and CE-QUAL-W2 was applied for the turbid water management in Yongdam reservoir, where it is evaluated to be appliable and important.

Physics-based distributed rainfall-runoff models are now commonly used in a variety of hydrologic applications such as to estimate flooding, water pollutant transport, sedimentation yield and so on. Moreover, it is not surprising that GIS has become an integral part of hydrologic research since this technology offers abundant information about spatial heterogeneity for both model parameters and input data that control hydrological processes. This study presents the development of a distributed rainfall-runoff prediction system for the Guem river basin ($9,835km^2$) using an Object-oriented Hydrological Modeling System (OHyMoS). We developed three types of element modules: Slope Runoff Module (SRM), Channel Routing Module (CRM), and Dam Reservoir Module (DRM) and then incorporated them systemically into a catchment modeling system under the OHyMoS. The study basin delineated by the 250m DEM (resampled from SRTM90) was divided into 14 midsize catchments and 80 sub-catchments where correspond to the WAMIS digital map. Each sub-catchment was represented by rectangular slope and channel components; water flows among these components were simulated by both SRM and CRM. In addition, outflows of two multi-purpose dams: Yongdam and Daechung dams were calculated by DRM reflecting decision makers' opinions. Therefore, the Guem river basin rainfall-runoff modeling system can provide not only each sub-catchment outflow but also dam inand outflow at one hour (or less) time step such that users can obtain comprehensive hydrological information readily for the effective and efficient flood control during a flood season.

In this study, the GPM (Global Precipitation Mission) IMERG (Integrated Multi-satellitE retrievals for GPM) rainfall data was verified and evaluated using ground AWS (Automated Weather Station) and radar in order to investigate the availability of GPM IMERG rainfall data. The SPI (Standardized Precipitation Index) was calculated based on the GPM IMERG data and also compared with the results obtained from the ground observation data for the Hoengseong Dam and Yongdam Dam areas. For the radar data, 1.5 km CAPPI rainfall data with a resolution of 10 km and 30 minutes was generated by applying the Z-R relationship ($Z=200R^{1.6}$) and used for accuracy verification. In order to calculate the SPI, PERSIANN_CDR and TRMM 3B42 were used for the period prior to the GPM IMERG data availability range. As a result of latency verification, it was confirmed that the performance is relatively higher than that of the early run mode in the late run mode. The GPM IMERG rainfall data has a high accuracy for 20 mm/h or more rainfall as a result of the comparison with the ground rainfall data. The analysis of the time scale of the SPI based on GPM IMERG and changes in normal annual precipitation adequately showed the effect of short term rainfall cases on local drought relief. In addition, the correlation coefficient and the determination coefficient were 0.83, 0.914, 0.689 and 0.835, respectively, between the SPI based GPM IMERG and the ground observation data. Therefore, it can be used as a predictive factor through the time series prediction model. We confirmed the hydrological utilization and the possibility of real time drought monitoring using SPI based on GPM IMERG rainfall, even though results presented in this study were limited to some rainfall cases.
