  • In this study, we have Quantitatively estimated the mechanical properties of SM steels widely used in steel structures after correcting and analyzing the millsheets of the steels. From this result, in present, the mechanical properties of the steels produced in domestics have satisfied the prescribed values in Korean Standards on the whole. The mechanical properties of the steels were dependent of plate thickness and class of the steels. Also, there have been linear relations between the plate thickness and the mechanical properties of the steels. And the results of this study have shown the similar tendencies with the existing results. Because the upper limit value of yield strength are not prescribed in Korean Standards at present, it is necessary to prescribe the upper limit value of yielding ratio(or yield strength) in order to assure the deformation performance of the steels.

  • The effect of nanoparticle volume fraction on the elastic properties of a polymer-based nanocomposite was experimentally investigated and the obtained results were compared with various existing theoretical models. The nanocomposite was consisted of high density polyethylene (HDPE) as polymeric matrix and 0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 wt.% multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) prepared using twin screw extruder and injection molding technique. Nanocomposite samples were molded in injection apparatus according to ASTM-D638 standard. Therefore, in addition to morphological investigations of the samples, tensile tests at ambient temperature were performed on each sample and stress-strain plots, elastic moduli, Poisson's ratios, and strain energies of volume units were extracted from primary strain test results. Tensile test results demonstrated that 1 wt.% nanoparticles presented the best reinforcement behavior in HDPE-MWCNT nanocomposites. Due to the agglomeration of nanoparticles at above 1 wt.%, Young's modulus, yielding stress, fracture stress, and fracture energy were decreased and Poisson's ratio and failure strain were increased.

  • Owing to the growing interest in the production of fuels and chemicals from biomass the well-know butanol-acetone fermentation as carried out by Clostridium acetobutylicum has been intensely studied again in recent years. Several solvent-yielding fermentation processes were established which are operated by using batch cultures or continuous cultures. 1 could be shown that under conditions of phosphate limitation an asporogenous mutant of C. acetobutylicum establishes itself in a chemostat which produces the solvents continuously. Attempts have been made to change the butanol/acetone ratio in favor of butanol production. A corresponding shift of the product spectrum can be achieved by carbon monoxide addition to the head space of the fermentation (B.H. Kim et al., App. Envioron. Microbiol. 48, 764-770 1984) or by iron limitation. Progress has been made in understanding the mechanism underlying the shift from acid to solvent prodcction. Experimental results are in agreement with the view that intracellular accumulation of acetic and butyric acid results in a shortage of phosphate and coenzyme A. This shortage may serve then as signal for the synthesis of the enzymes involved in the formation of acetone and butanol.

  • In this study, a prefabricated buckling brace (PF-BRB) was proposed, and a test specimen was manufactured based on the design formula for the initial shape and structural performance tests were performed. As a result of the experiment, all standard performance requirements presented by KDS 41 17 00 and MOE 2021 were satisfied before and after replacement of the reinforcement module, and no fracture of the joint module occurred. As a result of the incremental load test, the physical properties showed a significant difference in the stiffness ratio after yielding under the compressive load of the envelope according to the experimental results. It is judged necessary to further analyze the physical properties according to the experimental results through finite element analysis in the future.

  • This paper is a part of a research program to develop a new design method for reinforced concrete bridge columns under seismic loading. The objectives of this paper are to investigate the relationship between ductility and confinement steel amount and to propose a design equation for reinforced concrete bridge columns. Computer program NARCC was used for parametric study, which was proved to provide good and conservative analytical result especially for deformation capacity and ductility factor compared with test result. A total of 7,200 reinforced concrete columns confined with spirals or perfect circular hoops were selected by combination of variables such as section diameter, aspect ratio, concrete compressive strength, yielding strength of longitudinal and confinement steel, longitudinal steel ratio, axial load ratio, and confinement steel ratio. Based on the parametric study a new design equation for confinement steel amount considering ductility demand was proposed, which can be used in the new seismic design method, i.e. ductility-based seismic design, for RC bridge columns.

  • Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the major crops that is seriously impacted by global soil salinization. Rice is among those crops where most of the high-yielding cultivars are highly sensitive to salinity. The key to a plant survival under NaCl salt stress is by maintaining a high $K^+/Na^+$ ratio in its cells. Selection for salinity tolerance genotypes of rice based on phenotypic performance alone is less reliable and will delay in progress in breeding. Recent advent of molecular markers, microsatellites or simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were used to find out salt tolerant rice genotypes. In the current experiment phenotyping and genotyping studies were correlated to differentiate different rice accessions for salinity tolerance. Eight rice accessions along with check plant Dongjin were screened by physiological studies using Yoshida solution with 50mM NaCl stress condition. The physiology studies identified four tolerant and four susceptible accessions based on their potassium concentration, sodium concentration, $K^+/Na^+$ ratio and biomass. 17 SSR markers were used to evaluate these rice accessions for salt tolerance out of which five molecular markers were able to discriminate tolerant accessions from the susceptible accessions. Banding pattern of the accessions was scored comparing to the banding pattern of Dongjin. The study identifies accessions based on their association of $K^+/Na^+$ ratio with molecular markers which is very reliable. These markers identified can play a significant role in screening large set of rice accessions for salt tolerance; these markers can be utilized to improve salt tolerance of commercial rice varieties with marker-assisted selection (MAS) approach.

  • To develop the use of natural pigment for food, carotenoids from wasted persimmon peel were extracted with seven organic solvents. Among the solvents, acetone was a high yielding solvent of carotenoids. Extraction trends depending on process variables(temperature, time, solvent ratio to persimmon peel) were explained through response surface which was made by central composite experimental design. Carotenoid contents were increased with the extraction time and solvent ratio but it decreaed in the higher experimental design. Carotenoid contents were increased with the extraction time and solvent ratio but it decreased in the higher extraction temperature. The optimum conditions of extraction process variables were predicted as 29$\^{C}$, 93min. at fixed solvent ratio(1:27).

  • Cellular and castellated steel beams are used to obtain higher stiffness and bending capacity using the same weight of steel. In addition, the beam openings may be used as a pass for different mechanical fixtures such as ducts and pipes. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different parameters on both elastic and inelastic critical buckling stresses of steel web plates with openings. These parameters are plate aspect ratio; opening shape (circular or rectangular); end distance to the first opening; opening spacing; opening size; plate slenderness ratio; steel grade; and initial web imperfection. The web/flange interaction has been simplified by web edge restraints representing simply supported boundary conditions. A numerical parametric study has been performed through linear and nonlinear finite element (FE) models, where the FE results have been verified against both experimental and numerical results in the literature. The web plates are subject to in-plane linearly varying compression with different loading patterns, ranging from uniform compression to pure bending. A buckling stress modification factor (${\beta}$-factor) has been introduced as a ratio of buckling stress of web plate with openings to buckling stress of the corresponding solid web plate. The variation of ${\beta}$-factor against the aforementioned parameters has been reported. Furthermore, the critical plate slenderness ratio separating elastic buckling and yielding has been identified and discussed for two steel grades of DIN-17100, namely: ST-37/2 and ST-52/3. The FE results revealed that the minimum ${\beta}$-factor is 0.9 for web plates under uniform compression and 0.7 for those under both compression and tension.

  • The habit of anthesis and maturity of sesame were investigated as a basic research for the improvement of high-yielding varieties and cultural practices. Eight different plant types were identified using typical cultivars among gene pool grown in Korea. Non-branching, Monocapsule, Bicarpels quadriloculi (NMB) type showed higher ratio for capsule setting compared with Non-branching, Monocapsule, Quadricarpels octoloculi (NMQ) type. Non-branching, Tricapsules, Quadricarpels octoloculi(NTQ) type presented lower ratio for capsule setting than non-branching, tricapsules, bicarpels quadriloculi(NTB) type. The number of flowers by flower setting position was the highest on lower part, intermediate on middle part, and the lowest on higher part in NMB and NTB type. However, the number of flowers was the highest on middle part, intermediate on lower part, and lowest on higher part in NMQ and NTQ type. BMB type appeared to have the highest ratio for capsule setting when compared with the other plant types. BTB type with many flowers and capsules exhibited higher percentage for capsule setting than BTQ type with lowest capsule setting percentage. Capsule setting percentage of branch appeared to be lower than that of main stern in the branching type. The branching type had more flowers and capsules than non-branching type. Tricapsules type had more flowers and capsules per plant than monocapsule type, and bicarpels quadriloculi type had more than quadricarpels octoloculi type. However, capsule setting ratio in non-branching type was higher than in branching type. The ratio was higher in monocapsule type than in tricapsules type. Bicarpels quadriloculi type had higher ratio of capsule setting than quadricapels octoloculi type. Number of capsules per plant and capsule setting ratio are supposed to be dominated by shape of capsule (number of carpels and loculi), not by branching or number of capsules per axil. The order of number of capsules per plant was as follows; BTB, BMB, NTB, BTQ, BMQ, NTQ, NMQ, and NMB types. However, the order of capsule setting ratio was as follows: BMB, NMB, NTB, NTQ, NMQ, BMQ, BTB, BTQ types. Consequently, branching, tricapsules, bicarpels quadriloculi(BTB) type was considered as a sourse of breeding for high yielding varieties by introducing the genes govering BMB type with one capsule per axil which has high capsule setting ability.

  • For the effective management of groundwater resources, it is necessary to predict groundwater level fluctuations in response to rainfall events. In the present study, time series models using artificial neural networks (ANNs) and support vector machines (SVMs) have been developed and applied to groundwater level data from the Gasan, Shingwang, and Cheongseong stations of the National Groundwater Monitoring Network. We designed four types of model according to input structure and compared their performances. The results show that the rainfall input model is not effective, especially for the prediction of groundwater recession behavior; however, the rainfall-groundwater input model is effective for the entire prediction stage, yielding a high model accuracy. Recursive prediction models were also effective, yielding correlation coefficients of 0.75-0.95 with observed values. The prediction errors were highest for Shingwang station, where the cross-correlation coefficient is lowest among the stations. Overall, the model performance of SVM models was slightly higher than that of ANN models for all cases. Assessment of the model parameter uncertainty of the recursive prediction models, using the ratio of errors in the validation stage to that in the calibration stage, showed that the range of the ratio is much narrower for the SVM models than for the ANN models, which implies that the SVM models are more stable and effective for the present case studies.
