  • In 1981 Rice Black-Streaked Dwarf Virus (RBSDV) was severely occurred in Yeongnam area of Korea. The influence of RBSDV to rice plant was studied with two susceptible cultivars, Nagdongbyeo and Cheongcheongbyeo. The stunting rate was determined by the percentage of plant height of infected plants vs. healthy plants. When the rice plants were severely stunted by RBSDV, the yield components and yield were greatly reduced. The stunting of rice plants infected with RBSDV was caused mostly by the shortening of internodes in upper parts of the culm. The relationship between stunting rate of rice plants and yield was shown to have a negative exponential correlation. The regression equations of the relationship are experssed as follows: In Cheongcheongbyeo $Y=46.6lxe^{-0.0624_\chi}$, and in Nagdongbyeo $Y=54.82xe^{-0.067_\chi}$.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of drought stress during the pod developing and seed filling stage on source-sink relationships of soybean (Glycine max). Drought treatments were imposed by withholding water at the full-pod stage, 19 days after flowering, and then limited watering was relieved at 15 days after the initiation of drought treatment. Soybean seed yield was reduced by 39% mainly due to decreased pod number under drought stress, but the 100-seed weight was relatively less reduced. In spite of the 15-day drought during the full-pod stage, soybean produced good seeds showing similar l00-seed weight, protein, starch and soluble sugar content to those from the well-watered. Although drought during the full-pod stage caused source limitations; i.e. accelerated leaf senescence and reduced leaf soluble sugars, it did not cause limitations of other source characteristics such as SGR and leaf starch level. This is because the reduction in size of sinks, such as pod and seed abortions compensated for source limitations, resulting in balanced source-sink as expressed by LAR and the ratio of leaf area to seed dry weight. Drought stress during the pod developing and seed filling stage did not disrupt the source-sink balance

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the thermal comfort in Yeongnam area using climatic data and GIS data in order to determine regions necessary to improve thermal environment policies. The results of the calculated PET show that Daegu city is high and Bonghwa-gun is low compared to other regions. PET was compared with the typical classification according to regional characteristics. As a result, PET value of rural areas such as Changnyeong-gun, Haman-gun and Goryeong-gun was high but Green space was too low compared to other rural areas. Yeongnam area was classified according to the value of PET using cluster analysis. As a result, more low grade areas show that green space ratio was low and facility area was high. It is determined that there is a relationship between thermal comfort and land cover. The thermal comfort evaluation map in Yeongnam area will be useful for urban planning in order to establish a sustainable city in climate change.

  • A soil micromorphological study of clayey terrace soils in Yeongnam area was carried out to investigate the soil genetic features and to distinguish the soil parent materials. Dominant plasmic fabrics in the terrace soils were vosepic, mosepic, insepic, and masepic of sepic fabrics but the Geugrag and Upyeong in Yeongil sequence have an asepic fabrics. Embedded grain cutans in the terrace soils were characterized by having porphyroskelic related distribution. Among pedological features of the B horizons of the terrace soils, the argillic cutans of ferriargillans and glaebules of manganiferrous concretions were the dominant in mineralogical composition, and the papules are abundant in the most terrace soils indicating that the soils are generally old. The substrata of the Bancheon in Yeongcheon and Upyeong in Yeongil area were so different from the terrace deposits in plasmic fabrics that these soils were believed to be composed of bisequum profiles. Because of having the free grain cutans, it was considered that the substrata of Bancheon in Yeongcheon and Upyeong in Yeongil area might have a period of soil formation before deposition of the terrace materials.

  • The effect of environmental factors on the over-wintering success of the apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata, which is considered as unable to hibernate during winter climate in Korea. This study was examined to determine the location of over-wintering habitats in the agricultural water system related with weed control using the apple snail in rice paddy field in the Yeongnam district from 2003 to 2006. Over-wintering success of the apple snail was observed at Hadong, Hapchen, Sanchung, Kimhae, Milyang, Changwon, Ulsan, Busan, Gyengju, Pohang, Chilgok, Seongju, Gumi, Sangju and Youngju in Yeongnam area. And the over-wintering locations of apple snail going north year by year. Accordingly, the successful over-wintering sites observed were deep wells, water running canals and brooks not dried conditions. A special feature of this sites was that the water of this sites was not frozen during winter season.

  • Tentative consolidation criteria, a kind of land suitability classification, was established for cultivated upland soils. The criteria were composed of systematically quantified individual soil properties such as physiography(relief), slope, available soil depth etc., and local features such as soil complexity, mapping unit separation, width/length ratio etc. The criteria was applied to upland soils in granite area, and sedimentary rock area. It was clear that the comparison of local features among candidated areas, and classification of suitability classes for land consolidation of upland soils was satisfactory for selection. The status of the areas classified to "Well suitable" were distributed on alluvial plains or less dissected rollings with lower complexity of soils occurred and extended acreage in each mapping unit. On the other hand, the areas classified as "Unsuitable" were distributed on the elongated narrow valleys with quite divided mapping units by paddy fields on the valley bottom.

  • Soybean [Glycin max (L.)] cv. Jangbaekkong was inoculated with 5 cultivated- and 5 uncultivated upland soils, in Yeongnam area, as soil inoculum and NifTAL peat inoculum as standard for soil inoculum potentials by Bradyrhizobium japonicum. 120 Bradyrhizobium japonicum isolates out of the soil populations were scored of three colony morphologies, designed "Dry", "Wet", and "Dry/Wet", and symbiotic effectiveness between "Dry" and "Wet" was compared. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Indigenous populations of B. japonicum were above $10^4cells/g$. soil at the cultivated upland soils but were a few at the uncultivated upland soils except a colluvivum, orchard previously, in Yeongnam area. 2. Inoculum potentials of the cultivated upland soils were higher than the NifTAL inoculum and generally, nodule mass compensated nodule number for symbiotic effectiveness of soil populations. 3. Colony morphologies of soil populations showed the different proportions of "Dry" and "Wet" so that "Dry" types were dominant at the cultivated upland soils while "Wet" types at the uncultivated upland soils. 4. "Dry" colony morphology significantly exhibited higher symbiotic effectiveness than "Wet" types in nodule fresh weight, shoot dry weight, and shoot dry weight/nodule fresh weight. Therefore, as long as soil inoculum potentials, the growth of soybean at the cultivated upland soils could presumedly be affected by soil populations of Bradyrhizobium japonicum of "Dry" colony morphology.

  • To investigate effects of fanning practice and $NO_3-N$ contents of groundwater in intensive horticultural greenhouse area of Yeongnam province, the groundwater samples from 1,370 sites were collected and analyzed. In addition, cultivation year, crops, desalinization methods, amounts of manure application, tube well depth and soil texture with clay contents were observed. Of the investigated sites, 19.7% of shallow groundwater and 1.3% of confined groundwater were exceeded over $10mg/{\ell}$ as the $NO_3-N$ drinking limit value, respectively. $NO_3-N$ concentration in groundwater was highly significantly correlative with clay content $(r=-0.241^{**})$, well depth $(r=-0.228^{**})$ and cultivation duration $(r=0.104^*)$, respectively. In case of desalting crop method being executed for desalinization of greenhouse soil, the $NO_3-N$ value of groundwater was lower than any other desalinization method. The fact that $NO_3-N$ contents of confined groundwater was affected by shallow groundwater was clarified by that $NO_3-N$ contents in shallow were significantly correlative with the confined groundwater $(r=0.532^{**})$.

  • In Gimcheon area of the central Yeongnam massif granite gneiss occurrs with intercalated biotite gneiss at xenolith or restite. In order to understand the evolution of the central Yeongnam massif, it is essential to have absolute age information, but not many age data are available yet. Furthermore the previous age determinations from the study area are not compatible with the outcrop relationship. In this study we determined chemical ages from the zircon grains. We obtained ages of $1970\pm$ 78(l$\sigma$)Ma from the granite gneiss, $1814\pm$77(l$\sigma$)Ma from the outer rim of a rounded zircon and 1973$\pm$97(l$\sigma$)Ma from a longish zircon, both from the biotite gneiss. These ages seem to indicate the timing of granitic magma intrusion and subsequent metamorphism. Ages of $2954\pm$ 158($l\sigma$)Ma, 2440$\pm$58(l$\sigma$)Ma, and 2219$\pm$36($l\sigma$)Ma obtained from zoned core of the rounded zircon grain from the biotite gneiss suggest various geological events before such metamorphism of the biotite gneiss. Ages in the range of 1450~1670 Ma observed in zircons of both gniesses suggest later metamorphism that the granite gneiss and the biotite gneiss experienced together. The chemical age determination by electron probe micro-analyzer of this study utilized 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ beam diameter and it seems to be a very useful age determination from the zircons with complex growth history because of superior spatial resolution.
