This thesis mainly deals with what is th Gurodae, recorded of the YeonggeonUigwe and the SanleungUigwe. Gurodae makes diverse appearance In Uigwes.(久老代, 仇老代, 求路代, 仇老臺, 仇露臺, 求露臺, 仇累臺, 九累臺) It seems that Gurdae was an architectural member used on the roof. Especially that was a member of the eaves. Gurodae looks like a Pyeonggodae, located on the end of the rafters. But it differs in the shape compare to that of Pyeonggodae, Gurodae has the shape of combined members, Pyeonggoaed and Chakgo. Chakgo is a member covering the spae, between two Buyeons So Gurodae has the shape of prominence and depression. The result obtained by surveying the Uigwes is the Gurodae is the Gurodae used until 1789. After the publication of HyeonlyungwonUigwe in 1789, that member was no longer existed on the other Uigwes. In 1794, the making Hwaseong fortress, Gurodae divieed into two members, Chopyeonggodae and Chakgo. Since then Chopyeonggodae and Chakgo never combined again.
The aim of this study is to examine the square shape cases of rafter end header with special reference to wooden architecture and Uigwe records. In Uigwe, the member Bangyeon is widely used in multiple Changung and Chansil, and it is the most used in various gates in the buildings. It is also found in Haenggak and Subokbang. In the surviving wooden architecture, Bangyeon is found in pavilion, colonnade and gate in Changdeokgung Palace, and it is often seen in palace architecture. It is rare in private sector, and it is shown in Sangju Yangjindang and Andong Songsojongtaek. A total of 48 cases in Uigwe, can found records of Bangyeon. According to the records, mainly Yeonggeon Uigwe and Salleung Uigwe, it can be found that gates, also Bangyeon was used.
The purpose of this study is to examine the names and types of walls constructed in the late Joseon Dynasty in YeonggeonUigwe, a record of construction works of the Joseon Dynasty, and to examine the current status and name of walls constructed in the main hall and the Yeongnyeongjeon Hall of Jongmyo Shrine. The results of the study are as follows. First, the name of the wall can be divided into four types depending on the characteristics, including direction, location, shape, function, material, and complexity, and was used as a compound word in front of the wall. Second, some of the wall types related to the material were found to have differences in the timing of theypes of walls. Since the 18th century, the use of earthen walls has been reduced, and the use of wooden walls and paper walls are often used. Third, the walls of the Jongmyo Shrine were composed of a mud wall and a fireproof wall. A fireproof wall was installed in the main hall, including a pillar, while the Yeongnyeongjeon Hall was installed only between the pillar and the pillar. Fourth, the Gap Wall can be defined as the "wall constructed at the upper part of the chamber used in the construction of the building in Jongmyo." This study is meaningful in that it attempted to clarify the definition of a wall in the late Joseon Dynasty by examining the names and examples of walls used in the late Joseon Dynasty, focusing on walls that lacked research in familiarity.

In this study, the royal protocols of the Joseon Dynasty, known as uigwes, were reviewed to clarify the materials and structure of Korean traditional walls. For this, the Yeonggeon-and Sanreng-uigwes were thoroughly reviewed, and then the names, materials, and construction methods of the traditional walls were systematically organized. In addition, mix proportions of plastering materials used in the walls were estimated based on the records in the uigwes; these were compared with the ratios specified in the current specifications. As a result of the comprehensive review, it was found that the mix proportions of the plastering materials varied depending on importance of buildings, type of walls, and the raw materials. Based on this, it was concluded that the characteristics of each uigwe should be considered when studying the mix proportion of materials for the traditional walls. It was also found that there were differences between the traditional and modern specifications for the wall constructions. That is, historical records and the specifications currently used were different in terms of constituent materials, construction methods and mix proportions. As a cause of the difference, the disconnection of the traditional methods and the introduction of foreign plastering techniques during the rapid social change in the 20th century were suggested.
This study examines the examples and changes of wooden member terms in Yeonggeon-euigwe(營建儀軌) in the era of Joseon Dynasty. As a result of examining examples, about 240 wood member terms were found on the basis of phonetic value and examples different from today's term use were also confirmed. Wood member terms were derived in variety and synonym and different style, that is, coexistence or transition of several notations as the term indicating the same member was found. Derivation of detail terms has the characteristic increasing on the basis of morpheme and formation of different notation followed Chinese notation or was caused by complex coinage features like a coined word of Korea by the meaning of a word and borrowed character notation borrowing sound and it is also related to the specificity of that time which had dual language system. The typical examples without different style for long were pillar, rafter, door and window. Examples with active generation and selection of different styles included beam, capital and bracket-system terms. Different styles were caused by the combination of several notations including borrowed character in the process of Chinese character notation borrowing sound, Korean unique character emphasizing and limiting combination of 木 (wood) with side of character and Chinese. Period showing remarkable change of example notation was the compilation of ${\ll}$the Hwa-Sung-Sung-Euk-Eui-Gue${\gg}$ 華城城役儀軌. ${\ll}$the Hwa-Sung-Sung-Euk-Eui-Gue${\gg}$ is the representative type uigwe made by printed type not by handicraft. Printing by type accompanies unification of the shape of a character necessarily and it was considered that it resulted in the unification of character of different style, the number of strokes and minute difference of strokes, and it was interpreted that common use of intentional notation with the unification of the shape of a character was achieved.
Since the 1970's, UNESCO and ICOMOS have adopted or emphasized on the principles of historic preservation. One of them is what to require a repair should not be repaired beyond the limits of the features and techniques which had been adopted in those days of establishment. On the premise, this paper is to examine the materials and technique of wall plaster work in the government building constructions in the Joseon dynasty. The result of this examination shall come up with a basic conformity in the case of repairing the building established in the late of Joseon dynasty. This paper is carried out for the proper repair and restoration of architectural cultural properties. Construction reports and other documents in those days are examined for the study. Following conclusions have been reached through the study. The materials and technique which applied to wall plaster work in those days were quite different from the present. The technique that was used to wall plaster of government buildings in those days was not a lime wall plaster, but sand coat one. The kinds of material for setting of the sand coat wall plaster had been revised with the change of the times or constructions. The main kinds of material were composed of sand, white clay, paper fiber, and cereal starch. However, the present materials were composed of sand, white clay. Therefore, the present materials and technique which applied to wall plaster work for the repair and restoration of architectural cultural properties have to be revised and corrected.
The history to have used lime in building construction was much long without distinction of the East or the West. The ancient nations of korean peninsula had used lime as construction material. The witness was discovered in the kings' tombs of fifth century. In the Joseon dynasty(15~19c), what applied several developed lime compounds to the kings' tombs have been recorded in 'Sanleong-Uigwe(山陵儀軌)' & 'Yeonggeon-Uigwe(營建儀軌)' of those days documents. Therefore, this paper is to examine the whole procedures from the product and provision of lime to its application through those days documents. Following conclusions have been reached through the study. Three lime compounds to be developed for the kings' tombs was extendedly applied to residential government buildings step by step within the current of time. These compounds to be used in the kings' tombs of the Joseon dynasty had been correlated to those of the ancient nations, which were nations of korean peninsula in narrow range, chinese and orient nations in broad range. These compounds have possibilities of development as the environmental-friendly building material. And these compounds should provide a standard specification for conservation & restoration of the traditional and cultural properties. I could confirm that the whole procedures had not been developed within limited space-time of the specified nation & period, but within interactions of the nations & periods. In the periods which disturb its interaction, the expansion of productivity in building construction was interfered.
There are records and claims that tung oil was applied to Korean traditional buildings and furniture as finishing paint. Records of the use of tung oil(桐油) exist in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄) and The Royal Protocols of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝儀軌). However, there is also a claim that tung oil was not produced in Korea on its own, and that tung oil was not applied to important buildings such as palaces. Silhak scholar(實學者) Seo Yu-gu says that in Korea, people do not know how to grow tung trees, and boiled perilla oil is called tung oil. If tung oil was used in the Joseon Dynasty, it would be necessary to use tung oil for waterproof coating to preserve current architectural heritage, otherwise, tung oil coating would not be desirable. Analyzing the Yeonggeon Uigwe(營建儀軌) among the Joseon Dynasty's Uigwes shows that tung oil is neither mentioned nor used. In addition, as a result of analyzing the Uigwes mentioned in tung oil, it was found that perilla oil or Myeongyu(明油), not tung oil, was recorded in the actual material used. Therefore, the records of the use of tung oil during the Joseon Dynasty can be seen as records using Myeongyu(明油) or Beopryeon perilla oil(法煉荏油).

Following conclusions have been reached through the study. The components of old plaster mixtures which agglutinate stones each other were quicklime, perilla oil, and paper fiber. The components of old plaster mixtures which point joint of black bricks consisted of slaked lime, perilla oil, paper fiber, and cereal starch. These components were the same as coat surface of roof ridges. In the case of times, one of the following sand, white clay, sap of boiled elm bark was added to these components for the purpose of high efficiency. These materials and techniques which applied to plaster work of those buildings had developed in the process of making royal tombs. But these materials and techniques were quite different from the present.
Burnt down during the Imjin War(壬辰倭亂) of 1592, Gyeongbokgung Palace(景福宮) remained in ruins until 1865, when in the second year of King Gojong's(高宗) reign, reconstruction work began. At the time, a royal protocol(uigwe, 儀軌) for the reconstruction was not produced. Instead, the Gyeongbokgung Palace Construction Diary(Gyeongbokgung yeonggeon ilgi, 景福宮營建日記) records the reconstruction process from June to September of 1865. The contents of this diary reveal that the stone used in the construction was obtained from Ganghwa(江華), the Yeongpung field(映楓亭) just beyond Dongdaemun, and Samcheongdong(三淸洞), among other sites. In addition, selected stone remaining from the original Gyeongbokgung Palace site - such as that from the palace astronomical observatory(ganuidae, 簡儀臺) - as reused, while a number of buildings and stonework from Gyeonghuigung Palace(慶熙宮) were moved to Gyeongbokgung Palace. As a result, a number of $17^{th}$ and $18^{th}$ century stonework are currently located at Gyeongbokgung Palace. The Gyeongbokgung Palace Construction Diary contains a record indicating that the bronze dragon(靑銅龍) excavated from the lotus pond at the palace's Gyeonghoeru Pavilion(慶會樓) was created by special technician byeolganyeok(別看役) Kim Jae-su(金在洙) in 1865 for the symbolic purpose of protecting the palace from fire. The diary also reveals that among Kim Jae-su and the other special technicians(byeolganyeok) tasked with the installation and oversight of the palace stonework was Lee Se-ok(李世玉) - aid to have created the haechi statue at Gwanghwamun Gate. This indicates that there were men of court painter(hwawon, 畵員) background among the construction special technicians(byeolganyeok). Moreover, the diary records the names of the stoneworkers(seokjang, 石匠) who worked under these special technicians to actually carve the stonework. These included Jang Seong-bok(張聖福), who participated in the creation of the Geunjeongjeon Hall(勤政殿); and Kim Jin-myeong(金振明), who took part in the construction of Gwanghwamun Gate(光化門). Based on these results, it is possible to identify a number of special iconographic features of the scale-covered animal form(insuhyeong, 鱗獸形) auspicious animal statues at Gyeongbokgung Palace. These include a protruding mouth and large nose, formalized ears, and a mane along the back. Comparing these iconographic features with those found in the stonework of Joseon tombs makes it clear that these palace statues were created in the latter half of the $19^{th}$ century - the period corresponding to Gojong's palace reconstruction. This study was able to confirm that this iconography was taken up by the Gyeongbokgung Palace construction special technicians(byeolganyeok) and stoneworkers(seokjang) as they worked on tomb stonework earlier in their careers.
