  • In order to evaluate the air quality, dry and wet deposition samples were collected by deposit containers during four months in Inchon area. The samples were analyzed for its solid composition and trace elements(Ca, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn). The main results are summarized below 1. The amounts of dry and wet deposition in Inchon area were 1.06~3.14 ton/$km^2$/month, and affected by the rainfall and suspended yellow sand. 2. Through the analysis of solid balance, we found that 50% of total solids(TS) was fixed suspend ed solids(FSS), 25% was fixed dissolved solids(FDS), and each of volatile suspended solids(VSS) and volatile dissolved solids(VDS) accounted for 12.5%. 3. The amounts collected by sampler for trace elements were 938 ~ 2,765 $\mu g$ calcium/10days sampler, 0.2 ~ 90.4 $\mu g$ cadmium/10days/sampler, 26 ~ 298 $\mu g$ copper/10days/sampler, 928 ~ 3,939 $\mu g$ iron/10days/sampler, 50 ~ 202 $\mu g$ manganese/10days/sampler, 4 ~ 37 $\mu g$ nickel/10days/sampler, 52 ~ 406 $\mu g$ lead/10days/sampler, and 97 ~ 1,317 $\mu g$ zinc/10days/sampler, respectively. 4. Using the manganese analysis, it was found that 76.1% of TS was from soil.

  • In the adjacent seas of Cheju Island, the oceanographic conditions show low salinity surface waters starting in May. This water flows from the southeast part of the China Coastal Water, which flows southeastward along the Great Yangtze Sand Bank until April, with the help of southeasterly winds and flows from the adjacent sea off Cheju Island. In May, the Tsushima Warm Current and the low salinity surface water fluctuate in short and long-term periods as influenced by Yellow Sea Cold Water, which flows to the bottom layer at the western entrance of Cheju Strait. Temperature and salinity fronts in the northeastern sea area of U Island are formed in the boundary area between the Tsushima Warm Current, which expands towards Cheju Island from the southeastern sea area of Cheju Island and Hows out from the eastern entrance of the strait. Seasonally, additional oceanographic conditions, such as coastal counter-currents, which flow southward, appears within limited areas in the adjacent eastern and western seas of Cheju Island.

  • Over the past-decade of reform and opening up to the outside world, China#s GNP doubled which now ranks eighth in the world, making an average 9.6% increase annually. Some industrial products such as steel, crude oil and power generation rank fourth in the world, while output of coal and cement rank first. In the agricultural sector, China ranks first in the output of grain, cotton, meat and basically solved the problem of providing food and daily necessities for 22% of the world#s population, The Chinese government has set the objectives in environmental protection plan to be achieved by the year 2000 together with ecological protection. During the Seventh Pive-Year Plan(1985-90), Chains#s annual investment in controlling environment pollution was about 10 billion Yuan, or 0.7% of her GNP, while during the Eighth Five-Year Plan, effort will be made to increase such investments, in terms of the GNP, possibly to 0.85"1% . However, the expanding development including industrial production will increase large amounts of pollutants into the environment and efforts are underway to deal with these pollution. *대한위생학회장 Regional community are faced with serious environmental problems. For instance, so called# Yellow Sand Storm# from China is one of the case. Recently, to make matter worse, acid rain and dry depositation from transboundary air pollution is tend to increase mainly because of emissions from mainland China. Therefore, the countries concerned in the region, should seek to promote international cooperation on environmental issues. An overall aspects of development and environmental programs in China are presented.

  • Present study analyzed the temporal and spatial characteristics of PM10 pollution in Metropolitan Daegu area based on air pollution monitoring station data and measurements of PM10 concentrations in background area in order to provide essential data for efficient PM10 pollution management. The significant variation of spatial and temporal PM10 concentrations in Daegu area was observed during the study years. The highest maximum PM10 concentration(332 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥), average concentration(88 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥) and frequency exceeding PM10 daily standard(150 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥) were all observed in Namsandong located near a major roadway. The hourly and weekly variations of PM10 concentrations had different pattern for the measurement sites. The monthly and seasonal concentrations exhibited a notable characteristic: the maximum concentration was obtained in spring season, most likely due to Yellow sand effects. Furthermore, this temporal variation of PM10 pollution varied with study site. Meanwhile, the PM10 values measured at the monitoring site, Manchondong, were comparable with those of a control site. The average PM10 concentration ranged from 23 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ to 115 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ with a mean value of 53 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ in the former site and from 22 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ to 91 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ with a mean value of 45 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ in the latter site.

  • In order to evaluate the distribution and behaviour of atmospheric particulate metals in high-altitude area, we collected 22 aerosol samples using a high volume air sampler at Soback Mt. Meteorological Observation Station from Jan. to Nov. 1993 and analysed for metals (Al, Fe, Mg, Na, Ca, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) with ICP/AES and ICP/MS. Although sampling site is located in high-altitude and far from local sources of atmospheric pollutants, enrichments of metals are 2 times higher than those of western coastal reural area. This fact may imply that of metallic pollutants in the coastal rural site were came from further western side (e.g. China), atmospheric metals in this study area contain the signal of metropolitan cities located in the main wind direction (NNW). Sea salts are negligible in the aerosol particle population because reference elements of sea salts (Na, Mg) are all originated from soil particles. The contents of soil particles in aerosols are highest in spring and lowest in winter. Atmospheric enriched elements (Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) are diluted with soil particles, especially during the yellow sand period. The results of factor analysis suggest possibility of interpreting their chemical significance in terms of sources (soil, pollutants) and gas-particle conversion processes (formation of ammonium sulfates, ammonium nitrates and/or their mixtures).

  • This study was carried out to investigate the features of air pollutants in rainwater and trace their transported trajectories from other countries. Chemical analysis data of rainwater and suspended particulates collected at Seoul, Kanghwa, and Taean for three years were used to evaluate the effects of long-range transport of air pollutants. Scavenging theory on washout and rainout effect during a rainy period was applied to estimate whether pollutants in the precipitation were long-range transported or not. On the other hand, precipitation weighted surface wind were evaluated to analyze the effect from local sources on atmospheric concentrations. As a result, contribution of air pollutants caused by anthropogenic sources in the precipitation which was identified to be long range transported was confirmed significantly high and trajectory of these pollutants was to be equivalent to 850mb isobar. Although concentration of acidifying components increased in the precipitation, neutralization by alkaline soil components such as $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ was conspicuous especially during Yellow-sand period.

  • Species belonging to the genus Tryblionella are important members of the diatom assemblages of benthic environments such as tidal flats. Their proper identification is thus of great importance in terms of taxonomy, ecology, as well as environmental sciences. However, many species of the genus have been neglected and/or misidentified during diatom studies of Korean tidal flats possibly due to the small size of the species. Lack of proper references for the identification of the species is also noted. To better understand the diversity of Tryblionella species, sediment samples were taken from various tidal flats of the Yellow Sea. Light microscope (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations have shown the presence of Tryblionella adducta and T. hyalina, which have not been previously reported from Korean tidal flats. The former was found mostly from sand flats and the latter from mudflats. It is expected that the present study would contribute to a better understanding of the diversity and ecology of benthic diatoms of the Korean tidal flats.

  • Kidneybean(Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and buckwheat(Fagopyrum esculentum M nch) seedlings grown with Hoagland solution to a height of 7 to 10 cm in the earthen pot containing sand were used for experimental plants. One group of the experimental plants was irrigated with Hoagland solution composed of various Pb-concentratons of 0 to 1000ppm containing 30ppm, and the other group was irrigated with Hoagland solution composed of various P-concentrations of 0 to 1,000ppm containing 30ppm Pb for a month during June and July in 1979. By Pb-surplus over 100ppm, the margins of buckwheat were curled down and turned into yellow-brown chlorosis, but the leaves of kidneybean were become dark-green at an early stage, and then developed chlorosis, finally shedded earlier than the control. Pb-toxicity was similar to the symptoms of P-deficiency. The ratio, 3/1 of chlorophyll a/b at an early stage, was unaffected by Pb-surplus or P-deficiency, but at the later stage it was altered. ATP content with Pb-surplus of 100ppm was decreased by 69% in kidneybean leaves and by 38% in buckwheat leaves, and it with P-deficiency was decreased by 75% in kidneybean leaves and by 43% in buckwheat leaves. In the assay of ATP content of the leaves at intervals of three hours for one day of July in the year, the rhythms of ATP level were unaffected by light or temperature although the amplitude of the level was modified. The rhythms of Pb-surplus and P-deficiency plants were observed at the lower range of ATP content than that of control.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the chemical composition of dustfall at Cheju(mean sea level; 71.7m, 33$^{\circ}$17'N, 126$^{\circ}$10'E) and Ullung island(mean sea level; 22.1m, 38$^{\circ}$29'N, 130$^{\circ}$54'E) from October 1993 to september 1994. The dustfall matter samples were collected by deposit gauges. The ionic components of each samples was analyzed by Ion Chromatograpy (Dionex 4000i), While heavy metals by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry(ICP/AES; Shimadzu ICP-4). The results for seasonal variation of dustfall matter matter total amount, water-soluble ionic components and water-soluble ionic components total deposition amount to two sites were compared each other. The seasonal variations of dustfall amount at Ullung and Cheju island were found in order of Spring>Winter>Fall>Summer, and the maximum of dustfall amount were during the Yellow Sand period. Also, Total amount of water-soluble components except for $F^{[-10]}$ were high in Cheju more than Ullung island.more than Ullung island.
