Objectives: The aim of this study was to characterize the community health indicators affecting standardized mortality rate of cerebrovascular diseases(CVD) and to identify the relationship between CVD mortality and community health indicators in Gangwon-do. Methods: The community health indicators included material deprivation index, medical resource, rates of road pavement and local tax. CVD mortality and the material deprivation index were calculated in the registered death data and the 2000 census which were obtained from the Korean National Statistics Office. The community health indicators were measured using 2001 statistical year book of Ganwon-do. Data were analyzed by using Excel 2003, SAS 9.1. CVD mortality and material deprivation index were visualized by Arcview 9.1. Results: CVD mortality varied by region and sex in Gangwon-do. The highest CVD mortality in male and female were noted at Goseong-gun, the lowest CVD mortality in male was at Yangyang-gun as it of female at Pyeongchang-gun. In Taebaek city where material deprivation index was also the highest; in Pyeongchang-gun was the lowest. Also the higher material deprivation index in some regions was the higher CVD mortality was. CVD mortality was not related with community health indicators. Conclusions: The results showed the regional difference of mortality of CVD among counties and cities in Gangwon-do. It is recommended that other community health indicators besides material deprivation index, road pavement rate, medical resources and local tax affecting CVD mortality need to be considered to improve the preventive strategies.
The effect of thinned trees which are produced from forest thinning on forest fire was studied in this work. To investigate the effect of thinning slash, Yang-yang, In-je, and Ga-pyeong-gun were selected as thinning-areas and non-thinning areas. The research was carried out with the variations of tree's types, area's characteristics, thinning strength, thinning types, and pile types of thinned tree. The survey areas of 14 areas were selected at Yangyang-gun(5 areas), Gapyeong-gun(4 areas), and Inje-gun(5 areas), and on-the-spot investigations were carried out at the thinning areas of 9 and the non-thinning areas of 5, respectively. Non-thinning areas of 5, which are adjacent to thinning areas, were selected for the comparison with thinning areas and for the analysis of risk of forest fire. It is considered that forest fire have no chance to diffuse to a tree trunk because the height of thinned trees was lower than 1 m. However, it is considered that forest fire may affect directly to a tree trunk if it spread to piled thinned tree because there was no space between thinned trees and trees. Furthermore, it was found that re-ignition had a chance to occur due to lots of piled thinning trees.
Soraksan National Park and Odaesan National Park, that are 20.7 km apart, should play an important role as habitats and corridors for wildlife because they are located in the center of Baekdudaegan. However, landscape features such as small area, fragmentation, and geographic isolation seem to impede the proper ecological functions of these two national parks. Using GIS technique, we examined the pattern of fragmentation in these two national parks and adjacent regions (Sokcho-si, Goseong-gun, Inje-gun, Yangyang-gun, and Hongcheon-gun) encompassing a total of $4573.5km^2$ in area. We then selected the patches suitable for an endangered carnivorous species, leopard cat, based on habitat conditions, and identified the network and stepping stone among patches to enable leopard cats to migrate. Diverse roads and artificial facilities in the study area generated a total of 24,701 patches: 39 patches among these were selected as potential habitats upon considering the habitat condition such as vegetation types and minimum area for leopard cat. Three patches nearby Gyebangsan and Bangtaesan were identified as a potential network center to relieve the effects of fragmentation and isolation of the two national parks. Our results also showed that patches containing Jombongsan and Bangtaesan would act as a source patch from there leopard cats can disperse to both national parks. It is an urgent task to identify the pattern of fragmentation and the connectivity between patches in national parks and adjacent areas for wildlife conservation because almost all national parks confront land- scape problems similar to the two national parks examined in this study.
In December of 1989 and 1990, matured adults of chum salmon were collected from Namdae-chun River in Yangyang-gun, Kangwon-do, Korea. Artificial insemination was made at captured locations. The fertilized eggs were hatched in trough incubators and the larvae were reared in laboratories of the Yangyang Fisheries Institute and the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute. The fertilized eggs of this species were demersal and separated, and red in color with mean diameter of 7.2mm. The hatching took place from 480 to 531 degree($^{\circ}C$) days after fertilization. The newly hatched alevins were 1.80 to 2.56cm in total length with big yolk and lied on the bottom. In 35 days after hatching, the alevin attained $3.56{\pm}0.12cm$ in total length, and absorbed the yolk completely to become fry with 7 to 11 parr marks on the body. In 3 months after hatching, and the fries became smolt with silvery scales haring 5.67-6.53cm in total length. The early larval developments of chum salmon could be divided into three stages according to the changes in body shapes and length : larval stage before swim up, swim up stage and smolt stage. The growth of snout, trunk and body height to total length were faster than other body parts in swim up stage.
The purpose of this study is to examine the pattern and characteristics of population movement in Kangwon province. The data for this study were drawn from in- out- migration data established by Korea National Statistical Office(KNSO) between 2000 and 2007. Sample survey and depth interview were also used. The results showed that the population of all Si and Gun except Choonchun and Wonju declined. This decline of population in Kangwon province persisted during the last decades. The decline started with the industrialization in the 1960s and 1980s. The decline of population in Kangwon province continued in the 1990s and 2000s with the open agriculture policy rooted in UR and FTA. All Si and Gun can be classified into five groups in terms of population movement in Kangwon province between 2000 and 2007. The first group(Group B) is where in-migration from other Si and Gun and out-migration to Seoul and Kyunggi continues in the period. Choonchun, Wonju, and Sokcho belong to this category. The second group(Group C) is where out-migrarion to Seoul and Kyunggi is larger the in-migration. It includes Cholwon, Taebaek, Donghae, and Samchok. The third group(Group D) is where out-migration to Group B is larger than that of other places. Hwachun, Pyungchang, Hoegsung, Gosung, and Hongchun are included in this group. The fourth group(Group E) is where out-migration to both Group B and Seoul & Kyunggi is large. Youngwol, Gangnung, and Chungsun belong to this category. The fifth group(Group F) is where few population movement occurs. It includes Yangyang, Yanggu, and Injae. The findings also shows that the extent of population movement to Choonchun and Wonju is larger than that of Seoul and Kyunggi in recent period. This finding indicates that the effect of base city like Choonchun and Wonju has become in recent years.
Simple estimating method of rock drilling and blasting work size is necessary to apply as a guidance of general road plan and a cost analysis of mountain forest road construction. For this work study, 11 cycles were divided in 5km route at Hyeonnammeon Yangyang-gun and the mountain slope at every 20m interval was measured. During working days all kind of works concerned on drilling and blasting was investigated in every cycle. Depending on the simple work study results it's work size can bef estimated with high correlation between drilling length in meter and frequency percentage of mountain slope more than 70%. With total drilling length known the machinery hours, drillers and explosive quantify can be estimated by the regression with high correlation. Estimation of drilling and blasting work by mountain slope gradient in road route is proposed like table 5 with estimating value of machinery hour, drillers and explosive in granite gneiss region.

In this research, in order to investigate the principles for the development of mathematics textbook for decision-making based on storytelling, we conceptualized the educational meaning of decision-making and specified the principles and the methods for the textbook based on decision-making. We illustrated the principles and the methods by the cases from the model textbook for the conditional probability that we have developed. We discussed the implication for the future development and implementation of mathematics textbook for decision-making based on storytelling.
Anatomical and physical characteristics of Pinus densiflora woods damaged by forest fire at Yangyang-gun, Kangwon-do were investigated in present study. Even though the bark was severly carbonized, no trace of carbonization in the xylem was found. The amount of resin exudation was different by the degree of fire damage. Green moisture content of sapwood in the damaged wood was lower than that in the sound wood, but vice versa in the heartwood. Green density of heartwood in the damaged wood was higher than that in the sound wood, but there was no significant difference in sapwood. Cambial activities were found stopped in the severely damaged wood but were identified in the lightly damaged wood. In safranine staining process, epithelial and ray parenchyma cell walls in the damaged woods showed darker hue than those in the sound wood. Granular substances were observed in the lumina of ray parenchyma and epithelial cells of the severely damaged wood. Relative crystallinity of the outermost growth ring in the severely damaged wood was slightly higher than that in the sound wood.

The forest of Korea had been severely degraded since early 1900s until 1950s. Korean Government has successfully accomplished the reforestation works since 1960s. However, some plantations showed poor survival and growth caused by ignoring site characteristics in selecting plantation species and lack of tending works such as thinning. The natural regeneration of indigenous species, such as Quercus species and Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucc., were examined in the plantations of Pinus koraiensis Siebold & Zucc. and Larix kaempferi Fortune ex Gordon. Quercus species regenerated mainly by sprouting while P. densiflora regenerated naturally from a few mother trees that remained in the plantations. P. koraiensis showed poor survival ($IVI{\leq}25%$) and suppressed growth (height ${\leq}3m$ and $DBH{\leq}3cm$ at 20 year-old) by Quercus species or P. densiflora in the plantation areas, however had high survival ($IVI{\geq}70%$) and growth (8 m height and 14.1 cm DBH at 20 year-old) in areas where silvicultural practices were conducted. L. kaempferi showed good survival ($IVI{\geq}40%$) and growth (17.2 m height and 16.3 cm DBH at 30 year-old) mostly in valley areas, while it was nearly dead ($IVI{\leq}10%$) in ridge or ridge-slope areas and was replaced by indigenous species such as Quercus species ($IVI{\geq}25{\sim}55%$) or P. densiflora ($IVI{\geq}18{\sim}50%$).
The purpose of this paper was to ensure the basis for effective management of Tricholoma matsutake mountain province, to perform biotope mapping of Pinus densiflora based on growth environment of Tricholoma matsutake, target a cluster of Yangyang-gun, Kang Won-do. Study Methods were to review on growth and environmental characteristics of Tricholoma matsutake through internal and external documents and to identify vegetational structure and soil characteristics. This paper studied growth structure and soil environment of Pinus densiflora forest where a farm of production area for Tricholoma matsutake of in order to set the standard of Pinus densiflora biotope. Mapping standards were derived by separating of landform conditions, soil conditions, vegetation conditions. Biotope types were divided into possible production area for Tricholoma matsutake and potential production area for Tricholoma matsutake, possible production area for Tricholoma matsutake were Pinus densiflora biotope in landform and soil structure that enables Tricholoma matsutake production and Single-layered Pinus densiflora biotope of less than 30cm(DBH)-Tree species that other shrub is dominant in shrub layer, Multi-layered Pinus densiflora biotope that Pinus densiflora forest was predominant in understrory layer. Potential production area for Tricholoma matsutake were single-layered Pinus densiflora biotope of more than 30cm(DBH) in landform that enables Tricholoma matsutake production, Pinus densiflora biotope with Quercus predominant in the understrory layer, single-layered Pinus densiflora biotope with Quercus predominant in shrub layer, inappropriate vegetation structure area that the induction of production of Tricholoma matsutake was possible through future vegetation management. According to the research results, Pinus densiflora forest were divided into 16 types; 6 types of possible Tricholoma matsutake production areas, 9 potential Tricholoma matsutake production areas and 16 types of areas where Tricholoma matsutake production was impossible. Possible production areas account for 15.48%, or $9.8km^2$ out of the total Pinus densiflora forest while potential production areas take up 32.42%, or $20.52km^2$, and areas where Tricholoma matsutake production was impossible was 52.10%, or $32.97km^2$.
