초전도 박막선재용 IBAD-MgO 박막 증착 (Deposition of IBAD-MgO for superconducting coated conductor)

  • Ion beam assisted deposition(IBAD) technique was used to produce biaxially textured polycrystalline MgO thin films for high critical current YBCO coated conductor. Hastelloy tapes were continuous electropolished with very smooth surface for IBAD-MgO deposition, RMS roughness of Hastelloy tape values below 2 nm and local slope of less than $1^{\circ}$. After the polishing of the tape an amorphous $Y_2O_3$ and $Al_2O_3$ are deposited Biaxially textured MgO was deposited on amorphous layer bye-beam evaporation with a simultaneous bombardment of high energy ions. We had developed the RHEED to measure in-situ biaxial texture of film surface as thin as tens angstrom. And also ex-situ characterization of buffer layers was studied using XRD and SEM. The full-width at half maximum(FWHM) out of plane texture of IBAD-MgO template is $4^{\circ}$.

  • Three film deposition systems (pulsed laser deposition, sputtering, and evaporation) equipped with reel-to-reel metal tape moving apparatus were installed and used to make meter-long coated conductor. Buffer architecture of $CeO_2/YSZ/Y_2O_3$ was deposited on Ni alloy using sputtering, evaporation, and PLD. YBCO superconducting layer was continuously deposited on buffered metal tape by PLD. End-to-end critical current ($I_c$) of 107 A at 77 K, self-field has been achieved in 1 em-wide tape (thickness 0.6∼1.0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, tape moving speed 54∼72 cm/hr) over 1 meter length.

  • As power demands increase, development of the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is being watched with interest. Many types of SFCLs using various superconducting materials have been developed. Especially, the FCL using coated conductor (CC) has been investigated actively at present. CCs have many advantages for the FCL application. YBCO materials used in CCs have a high n-value, and it is relatively easy to choose a matrix of the CC for high resistivity. If the CC has high resistivity, high voltage can be applied to the CC. Then total length of the CC used in SFCL, which has effects on total price and volume of the SFCL, can be reduced. Short circuit tests of two different types of CCs in the liquid nitrogen bath and its sub-cooled condition were performed and analyzed. An effect of high resistivity of the CC and cooling methods on fault current limiting characteristics could be verified in this paper.

  • We fabricated YBCO film using a TFA-MOD method. In order to enhance the reaction kinetics and to control the formation of the second phases, $Y_2Ba_1Cu_1O_x$ and $Ba_3Cu_5O_8$ powders were used as precursors (the so called "211 process"). The films were calcined at $460^{\circ}C$ and then fired at $750^{\circ}C-800^{\circ}C$ in a 12.1% humidified $Ar-O_2$ atmosphere. We found that the microstructure varied significantly with the firing temperature. The textures of all of the films were similar and mainly biaxial. For the film fired at $775^{\circ}C$, the critical current was obtained to be 39 A/cm-width (corresponding critical current density is 2.0 MA/$cm^2$).

접합된 초전도 선재의 응용을 위한 전기적 특성 연구 (Study on the electrical characteristics of the jointed superconducting tapes for power application)

  • 본 논문에서는 YBCO coated conductor(CC) 의 접합연구와 접합된 선재의 응용을 위한 특성연구를 수행하였다. 최근에 지속적으로 연구 개발되어 본격적으로 응용이 시작되는 CC는 기본적으로 높은 인덱스 값과 자기장에 대한 임계전류의 균일성 등 다른 고온초전도에 비해 좋은 특성을 갖고 있으며 따라서 미래의 초전도 기기에 광범위하게 사용될 것으로 예상된다. CC와 같은 초전도 선재가 초전도 기기에 적용되는 경우 대부분 초전도 선재와 초전도 사이의 접합, 초전도 선재와 상전도체 사이의 접합 등의 접합들이 존재하게 된다. 접합을 위해서는 접합 땜납이 들어가게 되고 이 부분에서 저항이 발생하게 되어 손실이 발생하게 된다. 이러한 손실은 저항이 '0'이어서 손실이 적다는 초전도기기의 장점을 떨어뜨리는 요인이 될 수 있다. 따라서 CC의 접합 특성을 연구 하는 것은 초전도 기기의 성능향상에 도움을 줄 수도 있는 요인이 될 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 구리 안정화층, YBCO 층, 완충층과 기판층으로 이루어진 YBCO CC 선재를 이용하여 두 가지의 접합 방법을 이용하여 접합특성을 연구하였다.

YBCO Coated Conductor를 위한 texture된 금속 기판위의 epitaxial $Y_2O_3$ 완충층 증착 조건에 관한 연구 (Study on deposition condition of epitaxial $Y_2O_3$ buffer layer deposited on textured metal substrates for $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ coated conductors)

  • 2세대 초전도 선재로 알려져 있는 $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$ coated conductor는 금속모재/완충층/초전도층/보호층의 구조를 가진다. 2개 이상의 산화물 다층 박막으로 이루어진 완충층은 금속기판의 집합조직을 초전도층까지 전달하는 역할, 금속기판의 금속이 초전도층으로 확산되어 초전도층의 전기적 특성을 열화시키는 것을 막아주는 확산장벽으로의 역할 등을 수행한다. 1차 완충층은 금속기판의 집합조직을 유지하여야하며, 금속기판의 산화를 방지하면서 증착 되어야 한다. coated conductor 제조를 위한 첫 단계로 Pulsed Laser Deposition법을 이용하여 cube texture된 Ni 기판 위에 $Y_2O_3$ 박막을 증착 하였다. 최적의 증착 조건을 찾기 위해 증착 챔버의 산소 및 $H_2/Ar$ 혼합가스 분압과 기판온도를 변화시키면서 증착 하였다. $Y_2O_3$층의 (100) 집합조직은 기판온도 $600{\sim}700^{\circ}C$와 산소 분압 $0.01{\sim}0.1mTorr$에서 증착된 Y2O3 박막에서 금속기판과 유사한 집합조직을 얻을 수 있었다. 최적의 증착 조건에서 $Y_2O_3$ (222) ${\Phi}-scan$의 full width at half maximum (fwhm)이 $11^{\circ}$이고 (400) ${\omega}-scan$ fwhm은 $6^{\circ}$이었다.

  • In 1987, M. K. Wu and Paul Chu discovered $Y_{1.2}Ba_{0.8}CuO_4$ (YBCO) with critical temperature ($T_c$) of 93 K. It has significantly lowered the cost of cooling of a material up to the point where superconductivity set in. Utilizing the cost reduction of attaining superconductivity and the vast amount of research to understand characteristics of high temperature oxide superconducting materials, there has been effort to use a high temperature superconductor as a coated conductor. It is important to characterize the materials precisely for stable performance before commercializing. We used polarized Raman scattering spectroscopy to study structural and stoichiometric information regarding $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$, $GdYBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$, and $GdBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ produced by three leading groups of producing commercial grade high temperature superconductor coated conductors American Superconductor Corporation, Superpower, and SuNAM.

  • This paper deals with an efficient superconducting joint method between 2G high superconducting(HTS) wire, YBCO coated conductor(CC). Recently CC is one of the most promising superconducting wire due to high n-value and critical current independency from external magnetic field. It is expected to be used many superconducting application such as fault current limiter, persistent current system and cable etc. In most HTS applications, superconducting magnet is used, and it is necessary to joint between superconducting wire to fabricate superconducting magnet system. A CC tape used in this research consists of copper stabilizer, silver layer, YBCO layer, buffer and substrate. Direct joint using soldering method was inefficient due to resistance of copper, then copper lamination is removed by chemical etching method to reduce resistance between CC tapes. Jointed tapes were fabricated and tested. Transport current through jointed area and induced voltage were measured to characterize the I-V curve. Resistance between CC wire using chemical etching was compared with resistance of direct jointed tapes using soldering method in this paper.

Current Limitation by Bi-2223 Bifilar Winding Coils

  • There are many kinds of high temperature superconducting (HTS) application using Bi-2223 tape which is the most commercialized HTS material. Also, resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) have been developed using many kinds of superconducting material such as YBCO thin film, Bi-2212 bulk and so on. However, SFCL using Bi-2223 tape has never been developed. This paper deals with the feasibility study on SFCL using Bi-2223 wire. The over-current behaviors of Bi-2223 short-length sample were measured. To make the resistive SFCL, two small-scale bifilar winding modules using 7m Bi-2223 wire were fabricated; i.e. solenoid type bifilar coil and pancake type one. The short-circuit tests of the coils were successfully performed up to 16 V$_{rms}$ From these tests, the current limiting capabilities of Bi-2223 bifilar coils were confirmed and current limiting performances between two winding types were compared. In addition, the feasibility of resistive SFCL using another HTS wire, i.e. YBCO coated conductor, was also investigated.
