  • One macroscopic effect in the free-running Er:YAG laser is an accumulation of microscopic effects. Understanding of the exogenous water induced mechanical effect on the dental hard tissue by the Qswitched Er:YAG laser has an important impact on the further understanding of the free-running Er:YAG laser ablation on the dental hard tissue. The Q-switched Er:YAG laser (1-$\mu$s-long pulse width) was used in the recoil pressure measurement with an aid of water-jet system and a pressure transducer. The amplitude of the recoil pressure depends on the tooth surface conditions (dry and wet) and the volume of the water upon it. Wet surfaces yielded higher recoil pressure than that of dry, surface, and as the volume of the exogenous water drop increased, the amplitude of the recoil pressure increased also.

  • This study is to investigate the optimum conditions of Nd:YAG laser beam welding for Zircaloy-4 end cap closure by optical fiber transmission. Laser welding parameters which affect the penetration depth and bead width were experimentally examined using the various beam radius by the beam quality analyzer, joint geometries of end cap and the laser parameters which mean pulse width, repetition rate and pulse energy. Also, an optimum welding speed and the effect of assistant gas with varying the flow rate of He were investigated. We found that the laser average power for the end cap welding will be 230W and rotation speed must not exceed 8 RPM, the best position of focus using optical fiber with 600.mu.m will be 2 to 3mm below the surface of the material.

  • In order to obtain various waveforms of current pulse applied at the flashlamp, we have fabricated a Pulsed Nd:YAG laser by PFN with multiple-mesh formed LC network. we have obtained various waveforms of current pulse by adjusting the values of L and C, compared these waveforms of current pulse with laser beam, and then analyzed the laser output energy. We have got relations for $E_{TH}$ and $E_L$ at each mesh which supplies energy with flashlamp and found that output of Pulsed Nd:YAG Laser for 2-mesh, 5-mesh coincided with computer's simulation, PSPICE.

  • In this paper, we have studied minimization of the burr which occurred after $\mu$-BGA(ball grid array) singulation process, singulation of the multilayer with a pulsed Nd:YAG(266, 532 nm) laser is used to cut the metal layer which doesn't well absorb laser beam. Especially, the photoresist and $N_2$blowing is effective to minimize of the surface demage and burr. In this experiment, the $N_2$ blowing reduces a laser energy loss by debris and suppress a surface oxidation. The SEM(scanning electron microscopes) and non-contact 3D inspector are used to measure cutting line-width and surface demage. The $\mu$-BGA singulation threshold energy is 75.0 J/cm$^2$at 30 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/s scan speed.

  • This paper describes the weldability of JIS S45C medium carbon steel (same material with KS SM45C and SAE 1045) for machine structural use by Nd:YAG laser. This material have a limitation to the industrial application in spite of good mechanical characteristics. This is due to its difficult welding work from high carbon contents. We therefore have investigated laser weldability of this material to extend the application of medium carbon steel. The results of this study provide application possibility of Nd:YAG laser welding for medium carbon steel.

  • In this paper, we have studied minimization of the kerf-width and surface burning, which occurred after the conventional singulation process of the multi-layer BGA board with copper, polyethylene and epoxy glass fiber. The high thermal energy of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser is used to cut the multi-layer board. The most considerable matter in the laser cutting of the multi-layer BGA boards is their different absorption coefficient to the laser beam and their different heat conductivity. The cut mechanism of a multi-layer BGA board using a 2$^{nd}$ harmonic Nd:YAG laser is the thermal vaporization by high temperature rise based on the Gaussian profile and copper melting point. In this experiment, we found that the sacrifice layer and Na blowing are effective in minimizing the surface burning by the reaction between oxygen in the air and the laser beam. In addition, N2 blowing reduces laser energy loss by debris and suppresses surface oxidation. Also, the beam incidence on the epoxy layer compared to polyimide was much more suitable to reduce damage to polyimide with copper wire for the multi layer BGA singulation. When the polyester double-sided tape is used as a sacrifice layer, surface carbonization becomes less. The SEM, non-contact 3D inspector and high-resolution microscope are used to measure cut line-width and surface morphology.

  • Pulse laser welding of AISI 304 stainless steel plate was simulated to optimize welding conditions by using commercial finite element code MARC. Due to geometric symmetry, a half model of AISI 304 stainless steel plate was considered. for the heat transfer analysis, user subroutines were applied to boundary condition. The material properties such as conductivity, specific heat, and mass density were given as a function of temperature and the latent heat associated with a given temperature range was considered. A moving heat source was designed on the basis of experimental data. As a result, Nd:YAG laser welding for AISI 304 stainless steel was successfully simulated and it should be useful to determine optimal welding condition.

  • Various welding processes are now available for end cap closure of nuclear fuel element such as TG(Tungsten Inert Gas) welding, magnetic resistance welding and laser welding. Even though the resistance and TIG welding processes are widely used for manufacturing commercial fuel elements, they can not be recommended for the remote seal welding of a fuel element at a hot cell facility due to the complexity of electrode alignment, difficulity in the replacement of parts in the remote manner and a large heat input for a thin sheath. Therefore, the Nd:YAG laser system using optical fiber transmission was selected for Zircaloy-4 end cap welding inside hot cell. The laser welding apparatus was developed using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser of 500 watt average power with optical fiber transmission. The weldability of laser welding was satisfactory with respect to the microstructures and mechanical properties comparing with TIG and resistance welding. The optimum operation processes of laser welding and the optical fiber transmission system for hot cell operation in a remote manner have been developed The effects of irradiation on the properties of the laser apparatus were also being studied.

  • a parametric investigation was conducted to evaluate the effect of the laser beam for plastic adhesion. To determine the best condition for plastic adhesion, the $CO_2$(wavelength $10.6{\mu}m$) and nd:yag(wavelength $10.6{\mu}m$) laser were experimented with. From the experiment results obtained, the nd:yag laser was revealed to be the most suitable for plastic adhesion. In this study, three adhesion parameters such as input power level, working time of laser beam and pps(pulse per second) were systematically adjusted for suitable adhesion. From these experiments, it was observed that the target plastic melted and was evaporated by the nd:yag laser. Furthermore, the relationships between adhesive surface by laser beam and above three parameters were discovered.

  • ITO(Indium Tin Oxide) films for transparent electrodes of FPD(Flat Panel Display) were patterned in atmosphere using laser. A pulse type(repetition rate of 10 Hz) Q-switched Nd:YAG laser which can generate the fundamental wavelength at 1064 nm or its harmonics(532, 266 nm) was used for Patterning of the ITO film. In case of using the second harmonic(532 nm) of Nd:YAG laser, the ITO film(thickness of 20 nm) was removed clearly with a laser fluence of 5.2 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and a beam scan speed of 200${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/s. But the glass substrate was damaged when the laser fluence was over 5.2 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$. We discussed the etching mechanism of the ITO film using Nd:YAG laser with observation of the etching characteristics including a depths and widths of ITO films as a function of laser fluence using SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy) and surface profiler($\alpha$-step 500).
