  • This study investigated spectroscopic characteristics of shell crystals of eight marine bivalve species using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis; moreover, the Family level relatedness of shellfish was investigated. In XRD analysis, the shells of Ruditapes philippinarum, Meretrix lusoria, Anadara granosa, and Fulvia mutica were found to have orthorhombic aragonite $CaCO_3$ crystals, while shells of Patinopecten yessoensis and Crassostrea gigas had trigonal-rhombohedral calcite crystals. The shells of Mytilus coruscus and Atrina pectinata were determined to have a mixture of aragonite and calcite crystals. XRD information revealed the Family level-specific characteristics of shellfish; the results agreed with the current taxonomic system. In conclusion, spectroscopic characteristics of shell crystals indicated Family-level characteristics of shellfish and suggested a more intense species-level investigation; this technology may be useful in identifying shellfish species using small quantities of shells.

  • Identification of various inorganic compound crystals contained in solar salts, which are produced from 12 areas of Jeonnam, was firstly made by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The analysis of the XRD spectra was carried out on the basis of Joint Committee on Powder Diffraction Standards (JCPDS) data and the results of Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (EDX) measurements. In particular, the analysis of the XRD spectra supported that each solar salt contains $Na_2S$ (Shinan Jeungdo and Sinui), $KMgCl_3$ (Shinan Bigeum), $Ca(ClO_3)_2$ (Shinan Docho), $CaAl_4O_7$ (Haenam Songji), $CaSiO_3$ and $CaCl_2$ (Goheung) as inorganic compound crystals, which have not been reported for the solar salts. Also, the XRD results indicated that the solar salts maintain a cubic NaCl crystal structure without any change of lattice parameters etc. However, it was shown in the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) images that an external form of the solar salts has a lamination layer shape of a cubic structure, which is different from a simple cubic form for the purified salts and the reagent NaCl.

  • Preservation of the original form is the principle for conservation, management and utilization of cultural heritages. Thus, non-destructive analysis of these samples are important field of the conservation science. In this study, examined the applicability of nondestructive surface X-ray diffraction analysis (ND-XRD) for cultural heritage by materials (rock specimen, jade stone, pigment painted specimen, earthen artifact, metal artifact). In result, all type of sample is recorded suitable X-ray diffraction patterns for identifying mineral composition in case of surface condition with adequate particle size and arrangement. And diffraction pattern is reflected surface information than matrix. Therefore, ND-XRD is thought to be applicable not only mineral identification but also interpretation of manufacturing technique and alteration trend about layered sample (in horizontally or vertically). Whereas some exceptional diffraction patterns were recorded due to overlapping information on specific crystal planes. It caused by skip the sample treatment (powdering and randomly orientation). It could be advantageously used for mineral identification, such as preferred orientation of clay minerals. In contrast, irregular diffraction pattern caused by single crystalline effect is required careful evaluation.

  • Alumina particles wrapped in few-layer graphene sheets were prepared by calcining aluminum nitride powders under a mixed gas flow of carbon monoxide and argon. The graphene sheets were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The few-layer graphene sheets, which wrapped around the alumina particles, did not exhibit any diffraction peaks in the XRD patterns but did show three characteristic bands (D, G, and 2D bands) in the Raman spectra. The dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) with the alumina particles wrapped in few-layer graphene sheets exhibited significantly improved overall energy-conversion efficiency, compared to conventional DSSC, due to longer electron lifetime.

  • The precipitation of ultra fine ammonium perchlorate(UFAP) crystals from the N-methyl pyrrolidone(NMP) solutions of ammonium perchlorate(AP) was studied. The characteristics of the precipitated crystals were investigated by means of scanning electron micrograph(SEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA). When chloroform, methylene chloride and toluene were the precipitants, the product crystals had a mean particle size less than 2$\mu\textrm{m}$. The crystallographical property and thermal decomposition behavior of the prepared UFAP were almost the same as those of the commercial AP.

  • In order to understand the mechanism of cementation of soft soils treated with bacteria, three types of specimens(untreated, normal bacteria concentration treated, and high bacteria concentration treated) were made. Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM), EDX and X-ray diffraction(XRD) analyses were performed on the soft silt and loose sand specimens. Compared with the untreated specimen, a clearer cementation between particles was observed in the high bacteria concentration treated specimen. Based on the scanning electron microscope(SEM) EDX analyses, more calcium carbonate was observed in the specimen treated with high bacteria concentration than other specimens. On the basis of the preliminary results, it appears that microbial cementation can occur in the soft soil. Further study on the cementation of soils using bacteria is necessary to validate this result.

  • Carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were in detail characterized by XRD, XPS, FTIR, and thermogravimetric measurements. Carboxylic acid groups were functionalized to MWNTs under aqueous acid condition. The changes of sonication and reflux conditions rarely influenced the degree of carboxylation on MWNTs, but decreased the thermal stability of the resultant carboxylated MWNTs. XRD results showed that the diffraction peaks (100), (101), and (102) of pristine MWNTs disappeared after acid treatment, but the diffraction peak (002) was Preserved in the carboxylated MWNTs. The introduction of carboxylic acid groups on MWNTs caused to improve the dispersibility of the resultant carboxylated MWNTs in water.

  • The mesoporous metal organic framework structure of Ni-BTC was successfully synthesized in a low temperature and short operation time via hydrothermal synthesis process. Such operational route virtuously consumed less electrical and thermal energy. It proved time saving along with acceptable product yield (38%). The product was characterized through FESEM, FT-IR, XRD and $N_2$ gas adsorption measurement. Hightemperature stability of synthesized MOF was gauged by diffraction indexing of XRD patterns of as synthesized and heat treated samples of MOFs. The mathematically calculated particle size of Ni-BTC was found to be 42nm.

  • We presented plasma processing using a DC Arc Plasmatron for diamond deposition on Al2O3 ceramic substrates. Plasma surface treatments were conducted to improve deposition condition before processing for diamond deposition. The Al2O3 ceramic substrates deposited, $5{\times}15mm^2$, were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Properties of diamond (111), (220) and (311) peaks were shown in XRD. We identified nanocrystalline diamond films on substrates. The results showed that deposition rate was approximately $2.2{\mu}m/h$ after plasma surface treatments. Comparing the above result with a common processing, deposition rate was improved. Also, the surface condition was improved more than a common processing for diamond deposition on Al2O3 ceramic substrates.
