In this paper, we propose a series of calibrations f3r the x-ray three dimensional imaging system. In the developed x-ray system, a three dimensional inner and outer shape of an object can be reconstructed out of two dimensional transmitted x-ray image set, which are acquired by projecting x-ray to the object from different views. To achieve this, a reconstruction algorithm which estimates and updates the three dimensional volume from x-ray images is developed. The algorithm is named as uniform and simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique(USART) which is an iterative method estimating a 3D volume based on its projected images. In this method, it is assumed that the imaging conditions that are the relative positions between the x-ray sources, object and the image planes are blown. Practically it is not easy to know the three dimensional coordinate of the components of the system, since the x-ray is not visible and the image distortions are present due to the optical components in the system. In this paper, methods of correcting image distortions are present firstly. Then the coordinates of the x-ray systems are calibrated from the x-ray images of the grid pattern. Some experimental results on these calibrations are present and discussed.

This paper presents an accurate algorithm for geometric calibration of X-ray imaging system. Calibration is a very important process for improving an imaging system performance. There has been a lot of previous works using linear camera modeling technique, where lens distortion is neglected and/or center of distortion is assumed to be known. Geometrical distortion of image intensifier, however, is very large and its center of distortion should be calculated. This paper presents a new calibration method to estimate the intensifier position and orientation, scale factor, distortion coefficient, magnification factor, and center of distortion using the least square method. We investigate the properties of the algorithm by computer simulation. Simulation results show that the parameters can be estimated accurately using the proposed algorithm.
Inspection and shape measurement of three-dimensional objects are widely needed in industries for quality monitoring and control. In this paper, we propose a three dimensional volume reconstruction method, which is an iterative method and as uniform and simulated algebraic reconstruction technique (USART). In this method, two or more x-ray images projected from different views are needed, and also the geometry of the imaging system need to be a priori identified well. That is to say, the relative locations between the x-ray source, imaging plane and the object should be determined exactly by calibration. To achieve this, we propose a series of coordinate calibration methods of the x-ray imaging system using grid pattern images. Some experimental results of these calibrations is presented and discussed in detail ...
As a carrier of malaria and sneak of blood, mosquitoes are regarded as an unpleasant insect. However, there are novel phenomena that happen inside a mosquito. Among them, we focused on the blood sucking function of a female mosquito. The main objective of this study was to investigate the mosquito's pumping mechanism in order to resolve the problem encountered when we inject or transport biologic fluids into a micro-chip. To analyze the pumping mechanism, we visualized the blood sucking process inside a female mosquito. Flow characteristics of blood flow in a proboscis were investigated experimentally using a micro-PIV velocity field measurement technique. The anatomical variation of head, thorax, abdomen which work as pumps and valves, was visualized using the syncrotron X-ray micro-imaging technique.

A grid was sandwiched between two cascaded imaging plates. Using a fan-beam X-ray tube and a single exposure scheme, the two imaging plates, respectively, recorded grid-less and grid type information of the object. Referring to the mathematical model of the Grid-less and grid technique, it was explained that the collected components whereas that of imaging plates with grid was of high together with large scattered components whereas that of imaging plate with grid was of low and suppressed scattered components. Based on this assumption and using a Gaussian convolution kernel representing the effect of scattering, the related data of the imaging plates were simulated by computer. These observed data were then employed in the developed post-processing estimation and restoration (kalman-filter) algorithms and accordingly, the quality of the resultant image was effectively improved.
X-ray microscopy with synchrotron radiation(SR) might be a useful tool for novel x-ray imaging in the clinical and laboratory settings. Microscopically, it enables us to observe detailed structure of animal organs samples with a great magnification power and an excellent resolution. The phase contrast mechanisms in image by X-ray are described. The phase-contrast X-ray imaging with SR from in-vivo and in-vitro mouse tail, rat nerve and rat lung were obtained with an 8 KeV monochromatic beam. The visual image was magnified using 10x microscope objective lens and captured using an digital CCD camera. The results showed more structural details and high resolution images with SR imaging system than conventional X-ray radiography system. The SR imaging system may have a potential for imaging in biological researches, material applications and clinical radiography.
Synchrotron radiation (SR) imaging enables us to observe internal structures of biologic samples without staining. In this study, we obtained X-ray microscopic images of human breast tissues with 11.1 KeV hard X-ray microscope of the Pohang light source and used zone plates and phase-contrast technique to get high resolution X-ray images. Hard X-ray microscopic images of fibrocystic change and breast cancer tissues with a spatial resolution of 60 nm were obtained and from these images, we could observe the micro-structures of human breast tissue. Also we analyzed and compared these images, which revealed distinct features of each condition. In conclusion, SR imaging with phase-contrast hard X-ray microscope for medical application, especially in breast disease can give some useful information for clinical research.

A single-shot dual-energy x-ray imaging technique has been developed using a sandwich detector by stacking two detectors, in which the front and rear detectors respectively produce relatively lower and higher x-ray energy images. Each detector layer is composed of a phosphor screen coupled with a photodiode array. The front detector layer employs a thinner phosphor screen, whereas the rear detector layer employs a thicker phosphor screen considering the quantum efficiency for x-ray photons with higher energies. We have applied the proposed method into the inspection of printed circuit boards, and obtained dual-energy images with background clutter suppressed. In addition, the single-shot dual-energy method provides sharper-edge images than the conventional radiography because of the unsharp masking effect resulting from the use of different thickness phosphors between the two detector layers. It is promising to use the single-shot dual-energy x-ray imaging for high-resolution nondestructive testing. For the reliable use of the developed method, however, more quantitative analysis is further required in comparisons with the conventional method for various types of printed circuit boards.
As a carrier of malaria and sneak of blood, mosquitoes are an unpleasant insect. However, there are several unknown natural secretes related with mosquitoes. Among them, we focused on the blood sucking process of a female mosquito. The main objective of this study is to understand the mosquito's blood sucking mechanism that can be used to resolve the problem encountered in the injection or transport of infinitesimal biological fluids in a micro-chip. At first, the velocity fields of blood-sucking flow in a proboscis were measured using a micro-particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The velocity signals of flow in the proboscis show periodic variation. This seems to be resulted from the beating of the pharyngeal pump which works as driving power. To analyze the pumping mechanism, the temporal variation of the pharyngeal pump was visualized using the synchrotron X-ray micro-imaging technique. The volume variation was estimated by the help of digital image processing techniques. Once the main mechanism of blood sucking process was found, a effective micro-pumping system with high efficiency would be developed in near future.
Dynamic X-ray (DXR) is a functional imaging technique that uses sequential images obtained by a flat-panel detector (FPD). This article aims to describe the mechanism of DXR and the analysis methods used as well as review the clinical evidence for its use. DXR analyzes dynamic changes on the basis of X-ray translucency and can be used for analysis of diaphragmatic kinetics, ventilation, and lung perfusion. It offers many advantages such as a high temporal resolution and flexibility in body positioning. Many clinical studies have reported the feasibility of DXR and its characteristic findings in pulmonary diseases. DXR may serve as an alternative to pulmonary function tests in patients requiring contact inhibition, including patients with suspected or confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 or other infectious diseases. Thus, DXR has a great potential to play an important role in the clinical setting. Further investigations are needed to utilize DXR more effectively and to establish it as a valuable diagnostic tool.
