In this study, we prepared magnesium ion containing oxide films formed on the Ti-6Al-4V using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment. Ti-6Al-4V surface was treated using PEO in Mg containing electrolytes at 270V for 5 min. The phase, composition and morphology of the Mg ion containing oxide films were evaluated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and filed-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). The biocompatibility of Mg ion containing oxide films was evaluated by immersing in simulated body fluid (SBF). According to surface properties of PEO films, the optimum condition was formed when the applied was 270 V. The PEO films formed in the condition contained the properties of porosity, anatase phase, and near 1.7 Ca(Mg)/P ratio in the oxide film. Our experimental results demonstrate that Mg ion containing oxide promotes bone like apatite nucleation and growth from SBF. The phase and morphologies of bone like apatite were influenced by the Mg ion concentration.

In this study, transparent and conductive Al-doped zinc oxide (AZO) films were prepared on a glass substrate by an radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering method using a 150-nm-thick AZO target (Al: 2 wt.%) at room temperature. We investigated the effects of RF power between 100-350 W (in steps of 50 W) on the structural, electrical, and optical properties of the AZO films. The thickness and cross-sectional images of the films were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy. The thicknesses of all films were kept constant at 150 nm and grown on a glass substrate. The grain sizes of the AZO films were determined with the X-ray diffraction by using the Scherrer' equation, and their electrical properties were investigated using a Hall effect electronic transport measurement system. The transmittance of the AZO films was also measured by an ultraviolet-visible spectrometer.
Tropical organic soils having more than 65% of organic matters are named "peat". This soil type is extremely soft, unconsolidated, and possesses low shear strength and stiffness. Different conventional and industrial binders (e.g., lime or Portland cement) are used widely for stabilisation of organic soils. However, due to many factors affecting the behaviour of these soils (e.g., high moisture content, fewer mineral particles, and acidic media), the efficiency of the conventional binders is low and/or cost-intensive. This research investigates the impact of different constituents of cement-sodium silicate grout system on the compressibility behaviour of organic soil, including settlement and void ratio. A microstructure analysis is also carried out on treated organic soil using Scanning Electron Micrographs (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The results indicate that the settlement and void ratio of treated organic soils decrease gradually with the increase of cement and kaolinite contents, as well as sodium silicate until an optimum value of 2.5% of the wet soil weight. The microstructure analysis also demonstrates that with the increase of cement, kaolinite and sodium silicate, the void ratio and porosity of treated soil particles decrease, leading to an increase in the soil density by the hydration, pozzolanic, and polymerisation processes. This research contributes an extra useful knowledge to the stabilisation of organic soils and upgrading such problematic soils closer to the non-problematic soils for geotechnical applications such as deep mixing.

In this study, we investigated the effect of Na2SiO3 concentration on the Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation(PEO) film formation of Al6061 alloy. The morphology of the PEO films were examined by Optical Microscope(OM) and Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM). PEO film thickness increases as the Na2SiO3 concentration increases. The elemental analysis of PEO films was conducted using Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer(EDS). The cross-sectional elemental analysis result shows that the Si concentration tends to increase as the concentration of Na2SiO3 increases. X-Ray Diffraction(XRD) analysis was performed to confirm the degree of phase change according to Na2SiO3 concentration. In addition, Vickers hardness was measured to confirm the mechanical strength of the PEO film. As the concentration of Na2SiO3 increases, the hardness value also tends to increase.

Silicides have been used extensively in ULSI logic device fabrication as contact materials for the active areas as well as the poly- Si gates. NiSi is a promising candidate for submicron device application due to less volume expansion, low formation temperature, little silicon consumption, and large stable processing temperature window. In this report, the microstructure of nickel silicides fabricated with a thermal evaporator has been investigated. We observed systematic transformation of Ni silicides of $Ni_2$Si, NiSi, $NiSi_2$, as annealing temperature increases. All the silicides have been identified by a X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The cross-sectional microstructure of silicides was examined by a transmission electron microscope (TEM) equipped with a energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS). The surface roughness of silicides was measured by scanning probe microscope(SPM). Although we observed thin oxide layer existed at the $Ni/NiSi_{x}$ interface, we fabricated successfully $550\AA$-thick planar Ni-monosilicide at the temperature range of$ 400~700^{\circ}C$.
Iron complexes were prepared using ferric nitrate and ethylene glycol as starting materials and the ul-trafine ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles with the sizes smaller than 200nm were obtained by the pyrolysis of iron com-plexes at over $350^{\circ}C$ In addition the decomposition mechanism of the synthesized iron complexes was in-vestigated by differential scanning calorimeter X-ray diffractometer and IR spectrometer. Transmission electron microscopy and BET method were performed to analyze the effects of ferric nitrate contents and reaction temperatures on the size and shape of the particles.

The electrical, electronic, optical properties and the local structure of Nickel Oxide (NiO) thin film have been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Reflection Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (REELS), UV-spectrometer,Hall Effect measurement and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The XPS results show that the Ni 2p spectra for all films consist of $Ni2p_{3/2}$ at around 854.5 eV which indicate the presence of Ni-O bond from NiO phase and for the annealed film at temperature above $200^{\circ}C$ shows the coexist Ni oxide and Ni metal phase. The REELS spectra showed that the band gaps of the NiO thin films were abruptly decreased with increasing temperature. The values of the band gaps are consistent with the optical band gaps estimated by UV-Spectrometer. The optical transmittance spectra shows that the transparency of NiO thin films in the visible light region was deteriorated with higher temperature due to existence of $Ni^0$. Hall Effect measurement suggest that the NiO thin films prepared at relatively low temperatures (RT and $100^{\circ}C$) are suitable for fabricating p-type semiconductor which showed that the best properties was achieved at $100^{\circ}C$, such as a low resistivity of $7.49{\Omega}.cm$. It can be concluded that the annealing process plays a crucial role in converting from p type to n type semiconductor which leads to reducing electrical resistivity of NiO thin films. Furthermore, the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectrum at the Ni K-edge was used to address the local structure of NiO thin films. It was found that the thermal treatments increase the order in the vicinity of Ni atom and lead the NiO thin films to bunsenite crystal structure. Moreover, EXAFS spectra show in increasing of coordination number for the first Ni-O shell and the bond distance of Ni-O with the increase of substrate temperature.

Chemically functionalized plant oils, namely maleinized acrylated epoxidized soybean oil(MAESO), were used as a new bio based binders for photoelectrodes of dye-sensitized solar cells. The photocatalysts were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer(EDS), X-ray diffraction(XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and nitrogen adsorption analyses. The surface area and number of appropriate pores were increased in the $TiO_{2}$ particles prepared using the plant oil binders in comparison with the P-25 photocatalyst, due to the larger number of functionalities. The functional groups of OH on the surface of the $TiO_{2}$ particles increased from 9.9% to 16.62%.
Wine consumers desire to drink a high quality wine. For producing high quality wine, high quality soil is required. Conventionally, soil quality is assessed qualitatively. Using traditional laboratory methods, quantitative data can be obtained for management purpose, but it is time consuming and expensive. Therefore, new technology aims to address these limitations, namely portable X-Ray fluorescence spectrometers (pXRF). This instrument can be used directly in the field, requires no soil sample preparations, and can simultaneously measure a wide range of elements qualitatively that are useful for pedological studies. The chemical composition (Ca, Fe, Ti and Zr) of soils at Tallavera Grove vineyard in New South Wales, Australia, was studied using a pXRF. The analysis of the soil's elemental concentration (i.e. Ca and Fe) using pXRF supports management decisions. Measuring the soil's Ca concentration can be used to identify Ca-rich parent materials (limestone). The limestone indicates good soil conditions for vine production. Fe content was used to identify areas of texture-contrast soils or soil with accumulation of clays in the B horizon. In addition, a soil weathering index was calculated using elemental concentrations (i.e. Ti and Zr) to explore the history of soil formation for making decision of management. This index showed that the soil in the vineyard was affected by two processes: the deposition of materials from elsewhere (Aeolian transport or soil erosion) and mixing of materials from upslope.

Oxide phosphorescent phosphor has an wide application in ceramic art and decoration due to its chemical and mechanical properties. Here, phosphorescent properties of strontium aluminate phosphor ($SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$) emitting yellowish-green light was investigated with thermal treatment at $1250^{\circ}C$ under air and reducing atmosphere. The characterizations of thermally treated samples were analyzed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), fluorescence spectrometer. $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$ still showed a good phosphorescent properties after annealing process in reducing atmosphere, while phosphorescence of $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$ annealed in air seriously degraded, due to oxidation of $Eu^{2+}$ to $Eu^{3+}$ ions. It was also observed that $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$ annealed in reducing atmosphere emitted yellowish-green light during 3 h after being exposed to sunlight.
