DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE OF A PROTOTYPE MOTORISED MANGO HARVESTER

  • A prototype motorised hand-held mango harvester was designed and fabricated at the faculty of Engineering , University of Agriculture Malaysia. The harvester is aimed at reducing the harvesting operation time, improving the working comfort during the operation and increasing the harvesting capacity. The mango harvester consists of gripping and detaching devices, a power transmission shaft with a 12 V battery operated motor and an aluminium pole together with a collecting chute. Preliminary observation on the harvester's performance showed significant and satisfactory results. It was found out that the magno harvester was capable of harvesting on an average six seconds for each fruit detachment. Further study is being conducted to improve the efficiency and capacity of the mango harvester.

Reliability Evaluation of a Capacitated Two-Terminal Network (내용을 고려한 무방향 네트워크의 신뢰도 계산)

  • This paper presents an algorithm CAPFACT to evaluate the reliability of a capacitated two terminal network such as a communication network, a power distribution network, and a pipeline network. The network is good(working) if and only if it is possible to transmit successfully the required system capacity from one specified terminal to the other. This paper defines new Capacitated series-parallel reduction to be applied to a series-parallel structure of the network. New Capacitated factoring method is applied to a non-series-parallel structure. The method is based on the factoring theorem given by Agrawal and Barlow. According to the existing studies on the reliability evaluation of the network that the capacity is not considered, the factoring method using reduction is efficient. The CAPFACT is more efficient than Aggarwal algorithm which enumerated and combined the paths. The efficiency is proved by the result of testing the number of operations and cpu time on FORTRAN compiler of VAX-11/780 at Hanyang University.

  • This study presents heat pump system characteristics using hydrocarbon refrigerants as alternative refrigerant for R-22 with respect to the variation of indoor load. Pure R-22 and R-290. R-600a, R-1270 were considered as working fluids The experimental apparatus was constructed to investigate the performance of heat pump using the air as a heat source. The performance were calculated based on compression shaft work. refrigeration capacity. pressure ratio, discharge temperature and COP. The experimental results show that the COP and refrigeration capacity of hydrocarbon refrigerants were higher than that of R-22. Through the above. hydrocarbon refrigerants are good alternatives in the heat pump system for R-22.

Steady-State Performances Analysis of a Tilting-Pad Gas Bearing (틸팅 패드 기체베어링의 정상상태 성능해석)

  • In this paper, the steady-state performances analysis of a tilting pad gas bearing(TPGB) we analyzed by using finite element method for compressible Reynolds' equation. TPGB is used in a high-expansion-ratio expander running at a speed of 230,000 rpm. In order to solve the nonlinear finite element equations, the Newton-Raphson method is applied. The variations of the loading capacity, friction force and tilting angle of a single pad v.s. eccentricity direction of eccentricity and bearing number are investigated. The condition for the equilibrium of a pad, which is important for safe working of the bearing, is stated. The performances of the three pad bearing such as loading capacity, friction moment are predicted.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of an autocascade refrigeration system by simulation and experiment using refrigerant mixtures of R744/134a and R744/290 as working fluid. Variations of mass flow rate of refrigerant, compressor work refrigeration capacity and COP with respect to mass fraction of R744/134a and R744/290 mixture were presented under different operating conditions. Performance test has been executed by ASRAE standard. Experimental results show as the composition of R744 in the refrigerant mixture increases, heating and coling capacity are enhanced, but COP trends to decrease. Experimental results are compared with those from the simulation.

  • A diffusion absorption refrigerator is a heat-generated refrigeration system. It uses a three-component working fluid consisting of the refrigerant (ammonia), the absorbent (water) and the auxiliary gas (typically hydrogen). This system has no moving parts and the associated noise and vibration. In this study, the operating characteristics of diffusion absorption refrigerator are investigated through cycle modeling and simulation. System parameters considered in this study are the charged concentration of ammonia aqueous solution, the concentration difference between absorber inlet and outlet and the system pressure determined by the amount of auxiliary gas charged. It was found that there exists a critical value of concentration difference that maximizes the refrigerating capacity. And the lower the system pressure, the higher the refrigerating capacity.

  • A numerical model for predicting the performance of gas distrubutor type double inlet pulse tube refrigerators has been developed. The model was based on adiabatic analysis and the losses of heat exchangers and regenerator were considered. Thermodynamic behavior of working fluid within a double inlet pulse tube refrigerator was investigated and the effects of design parameters, such as valve and orifice openings, cold heat exchanger temperature, frequency and pulse tube length, on the cooling capacity and COP were shown.

  • A free piston and free displacer(FPFD) Stirling cryocooler for cooling infrared and cryo-sensors is currently under development at KIMM(Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials). A Stirling cryocooler is relatively compact, reliable, commercially available, and uses helium as a working fluid. The FPFD stirling cryocooler consists of two compressor pistons driven by linear motors which makes pressure waves and a pneumatically driven displacer piston with regenerator. The FPFD Stirling cryocooler employs 1) the Stirling cycle for refrigeration, 2) linear for driving the cryocooler, 3) spring and gas support systems, and 4) fine gap for clearance seals. It is the most suitable design for a mechanical cryocooler utilized in night vision environment. In order to get optimum operating frequency, natural frequency of piston and displacer, optimum phase angle between piston and displacer, cooling capacity, performance tests of the Stirling cryocooler by the frequency characteristics were performed.

  • We have investigated the $LiMn_2O_4$system as an cathode material for lithium rechargeable batteries. $LiMn_2O_4$spinel oxides have been synthesized by a solid state methode. We varied sintering time at a fixed sintering temperature of 75$0^{\circ}C$. In order to investigate the electrochemical properties of prepared $LiMn_2O_4$we assembled three-electrode cells using the working electrode as active material and Li metal as the counter and reference electrodes. The electrolyte was 1 M LiPE$_{6}$-EC:DEC(1:1 by volume). The particle size of sample synthesized at 75$0^{\circ}C$ ranged about 60$\mu m$. The discharge capacity of a cell involving spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ increased with increasing sintering time.e.

  • A summary of the various techniques available to calculate negative skin frictions on piles is presented. In light of all these existing techniques, a simple method is recommended to calculate the negative friction based on strength of pile material, bearing capacity and pile settlement. An example is worked out and the results of a numerical analysis are highlighted.
